Mercyful Fate & King Diamond, although the vocals can take some time to get used to. Ayreon, if you like progressive rock/metal comes to mind. Virgin Steele, if you like more traditional metal with a bit of classical musical thrown in the mix.

Methinks the OP doesn't listen to a lot of metal, but that's okay. You'll learn.
Go listen to Between the Buried and Me. They don't use standard song structures and they're awesome.

I'm so psyched there are other people into Bear Vs. Shark here. I wish they'd reunite. Wire - Pink Flag; Chairs Missing; 154 Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime (See also - Can, Neu, Pere Ubu, DNA, Suicide, James Chance and the Contortions, Theoretical Girls) Holy shit, what awesome taste. PS: I'm from Columbus, too, so I'm just curious: do you go to concerts around here much and, if so, where?

Basically every metal/punk/hardcore/rock band that isn't played on FM radio.

Would Sugar Ray count? They use to be heavy metal and now they are reggae-pop.

Would Sugar Ray count? They use to be heavy metal and now they are reggae-pop. Not really. Their song structures are still more or less verse-chorus-verse.

SikTh, Meshuggah, Textures, Spastic Ink, Blotted Science, Dream Theater, Opeth to a certain extent.
Also, my friends' now-defunct band Facebummers ;D

That neither Radiohead or Pink Floyd have been mentioned is beyond me. Some of their songs are VCV, but just as many aren't.
Jed Shaffer ~"Paranoid Android" ... need I say more?
