but then somehow ended up getting better and better?
The only show I can think of is Boy Meets World.
It started out as a pretty milk toast, bleh comedy but as the show progressed the style of humor got more goofy and self referential.
This is the only show I can think of that pulled a positive 180

The X-Files had a bad first season, improved, and then sort of got lame after Mulder left. It wasn't bad, but without Mulder, then what's the point?

This is the only show I can think of that pulled a positive 180 I came here to post exactly this. My other pick: Beverly Hills 90210. It hit on all cylanders during season 2 and didnt look back until the latter stages of it's run

I shouldn't say this, but NCIS. It started out okay, but improved in season 2, and come season 3 it really seemed to hit it's stride. Probably because of the line up changes.
Another series that I think only improved with a line up change was Criminal Minds. Mandy Patinkin was good in his role, but once Joe Mantegna came on it seemed to be more entertaining.

Melrose Place (the 90s version) was pretty dull for the first season. It improved greatly in season 2 when it turned into a primetime soap and didn't drop off until 3-4 years later.

Supernatural. The first season was pretty average, but has indeed picked up over the past few years, at least until this current season.

I thought the first season of Fresh Prince was pretty dull, but the show got awesome as it went on. The Simpsons was well was fairly bad at first.

The first season of It's always sunny isn't as funny as season 2 and 3. I think the show got really funny as soon as Danny DeVito joined the cast.

Although it wasn't that long running, Blackadder fits the description. The first series wasn't that good ok but the rest were all masterpieces. (Except that awful Millennium Special)

The first RAW gave us such luminaries as Max Moon challenging then IC champion Shawn Micheals and the "Glory" that was Damien Demento.
It really had nowhere to go but up.

Although it wasn't that long running, Blackadder fits the description. The first series wasn't that good ok but the rest were all masterpieces. (Except that awful Millennium Special) True the first season of Blackadder wasn't as great as the other three, but it still had its moments. For example, when Edmund was made head priest (I think, it's been a while) and convinced someone why hell was better than heaven for him. Then the exchange between him and his dad after that guy he talked to signed his property over to the church. <Richard IV>My son! <Edmund>Father! <Richard IV>Father! <Edmund>My son! Also, I can't badmouth anything with Brian Blessed in it. That includes Star Wars: Episode I. ANYWAY, for a choice for this thread, I'll pick Star Trek: The Next Generation. The first two seasons were merely OK...by the end of the third season they hit their stride. ...for that matter, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as well.

Newhart started out kinda dull and boring, then they replaced the original maid with Stephanie VanderKellen (Julia Duffy) for Season 2. (Show lasted 8 seasons.)
Same with The Odd Couple. The show was so much better once they "changed apartments" (got a better set; the old one was just the same set they used in the movie version; from which the TV series was based on). They dropped all the poker buddies except for Murray the Cop, got the ex-wives in the mix and it was so much better. (Show lasted 5 seasons, which I consider "long-running", because it's still constantly shown in syndication.)

Pretty sure Seinfeld would be on this list, although I never watched much of it myself. I've heard that it was pretty much up to be cancelled and was saved after the first season, then went on to be what it was.

I probably should have disclaimered this, the first season of most TV Shows were still pretty bland (EX: Seinfeld The Simpsons) Just because it takes a while for the writers and actors to get a grasp of who the characters are supposed to be

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Eureka Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (heh) Dragon Ball Z One Piece (and most long-running animes) 90210 (new series, even though it's only S3 now) Survivor: Samoa + Survivor: Heroes v Villains (thanks to RUSSELL HANTZ for saving Survivor's ratings altogether)

Saved By the Bell, King of Queens, and Everybody Loves Raymond are the first ones I could think of. but then somehow ended up getting better and better? The only show I can think of is Boy Meets World. It started out as a pretty milk toast, bleh comedy but as the show progressed the style of humor got more goofy and self referential. I actually liked the first couple of seasons of Boy Meets World the best, and felt it went really downhill around season 3 and I never watched it anymore. Same with Supernatural, I liked it better when it was mainly just about Sam and Dean going on hunts. I really kinda hate the show's continuing mythology now and it's character overload, and wish it would go back to Sam and Dean hunting a different demon/monster/ghost every week.

Smallville. It started out by having a different meteor "freak of the week" and didn't really have much connection to Superman beyond the characters. As seasons went on, they ditched the freak of the week formula and have dug much deeper into the DC Comics mythology. A definite positive change.

M*A*S*H had a shaky first series where they weren't sure what they what they were doing and what the focus should be.

South Park started off as just shock value, now it's at least witty shock value.
