I was just thinking about this after watching "Man on the Moon," which I think is Jim Carrey's best acting performance. However, thinking about the best acting performance EVER I just can't come to a conclusion.
Right now I'm thinking of Malcom McDowell in "A Clockwork Orange" but I am almost positive I'll think of a better one. I think the only reasons McDowell was not given academy award consideration for it was that he was so young as an actor and thought not to have paid his dues as well as the controversial nature of the film.
I do think McDowell could have put on possibly the best performance of all time if he was cast in the lead role in "Barry Lyndon" and the movie was retooled a bit. Its particularly frustrating given that the film was Stanley Kubrick's next film after "A Clockwork Orange" and McDowell was eager to work with Kubrick again. So who does Kubrick cast? The guy who gave us this fine bit of acting:

Obviously it is Sir Tommy Wiseau in The Room.
Although "Steven" who shows up at random late in the film runs him very close.

It's a shame what became of Malcolm McDowell's career. Sure his career in the later years has been pretty good with scene stealing scenes or having a voice everyone recognizes because he is always one of the main voice actors of a video game or cartoons but it's a shame still. Kubrick rarely ever praises an actor on set or in interviews but Malcolm McDowell was one of the few he did praise.

Obviously, there are a lot of choices that make it impossible to choose just one, but one performance immediately made me declare out loud, "That's one of the best cinematic pieces of acting to ever hit a roll of film." And that was ...

Maria Falconetti in Carl Dreyer's "The Passion of Joan of Arc". I'm impressed. That's one the quintessential "HUH?"-inspiring mentions, but I totally dig it, and I agree with it as one of the tops. Just didn't want it to go no-sold.

I'm sure I'll get lynched, but Johnny Depp in the first PotC movie (before he becomes more of a characature of Jack Sparrow) in the later ones is pretty good, he really just became that character for the movie. Also Harrison Ford as Han Solo.
