Garbage. Shirley Manson seems to actively work at not overshadowing the others. Plus, Butch Vig has a pretty good career as a producer, so, there's that. Jed Shaffer ~I wouldn't say The Cranberries. Quick, name someone besides Dolores O'Riordan without looking them up. Played bass for three years.

For the brief period of time they existed, Waterface. Nobody know who the backing band was, but nobody knew who the lead singer (Jody) was, either.
And in the same vein as Metric, you could count almost ANY indie-ish/electro-ish act (especially if it's 3 people or less).
- School of Seven Bells - Crystal Castles - Blonde Redhead (though for a while, I thought Kazu Makino was a guy pretending to be a woman.)

How to Destroy Angels, only because Trent Reznor is in the band (or whatever it is) and his wife is the lead singer.

I think (and I don't follow them closely so I could be wrong) Lacuna Coil could fall into this category. thanks, I needed a laugh having female vocalists seems to work for f*** the Facts and Agoraphobic Nosebleed. then again, they are grindcore bands, so it isn't really about image at all.

Would Tony Orlando & Dawn count? Considering "Dawn" is actually 2 females that sang with the Tony Orlando?

I'll give you School of Seven Bells but probably not Crystal Castles. Alice Glass is the face of that band, even if Ethan Kath is important, too. The Plasmatics? Definite no on the Plasmatics. It was all about Wendy O. Williams. BTW, this is a hard, excellent question. My contribution: Kim Deal from the Pixies. To me, it's always been about Deal and Frank Black. I'd also possibly put The Dollyrots and Bullets to Broadway, two pop-punk bands, up there. If we're counting non-singers in any capacity, I'd throw in Sandy M from F***ed Up.

Be Your Own Pet.
Nothing against Jemina but it was the band itself that made them so great. If that even makes sense. Especially the guitar player.

I think (and I don't follow them closely so I could be wrong) Lacuna Coil could fall into this category. I disagree, the band is all about Scabbia. Arch Enemy is the closest I can think of, and only because they got a female lead singer after three or four albums, so the Amott brothers were already well established before Angela came in, but even so, she is the most prominent now.

Arch Enemy were little-known and referred to as "the one guy from Carcass' new band" before Angela joined. a darn shame, because IMO burning Bridges (their last pre-Angela album) is their best one. without Angela they probably would've been in the same boat as other bands like Darkane and The Crown instead of being grouped with In Flames and Soilwork (not that In Flames or Soilwork are particularly good anymore, they're just the most famous melodeth bands).

Going back a few decades, Fleetwood Mac seemed to be considered as a whole, and not just "Stevie Nicks and friends" and Jefferson Airplane. Any others? Gotta disagree. Grace Slick was quite a scene all her own. She just never left despite all incarnations of the band. Stevie Nicks did leave Fleetwood Mack and did a very successful tour and albums w/o the band you just put lousy aresed Christina McNichols in her place. I have to throw some salt for a moment. Gwen Steffani and No Doubt made a point of lampooning female singers and their overshadowing the rest of the band in a music video for Don't Speak in 96. then she went about making appearences by the dozen, singing on other people's tracks ect. without mentioning her band. I won't say the break they took was her fault because I just do not know that but I found that vid hypocritical. Still love Gwen and love No Doubt but that stuck in my craw

Damn it Nightwish and Arch Enemy have both been said. Well those were my answers too.
I'd say bands like Within Temptation and other Gothic-ish metal stuff, but it might be getting too obscure for anyone to be overshadowing.

Not sure what the point is.
Chris Martin overshadows Coldplay intentionally because the others don't want media attention. Sometimes bands appoint a leader because that person is comfortable with the publicity.
