All this No Doubt/Gwen stuff makes you wonder what would've happened if their original lead singer hadn't killed himself. I think about that whenever I listen to them. They could have been just as big.

They could have been just as big. Just as big, yet VERY different. There is an old gig of theirs floating around on Youtube in its entirety, featuring their old lead singer, and a very young Gwen on backing vocals. They were destined to become the second-coming of Madness, incredibly!

No way. The spotlight is all rightfully on Jenny Lewis. My Bloody Valentine - Mainly because Kevin Shields overshadows everyone else by himself, but Kevin and Belinda might as well be the band, since Debbie says she basically did as she was instructed to, and Colm was so unable to record drum sessions during the making of Loveless that he was sampled on every song except for 2 during the recording sessions. Arcade Fire - Not a single member of that group screams "Break away and go solo", especially Regine. Portishead - Can anyone name a member of this group off the top of their heads? I don't even think of them as individuals. Shiny Toy Guns, Sleigh Bells, Brazilian Girls, Warpaint, the xx, and to a certain extent the Yeah Yeah Yeahs can be included too. The xx and Arcade Fire are pretty great choices, but using Warpaint is totally cheating (there are four female members and all of them sing, plus this topic seems to be about female singers versus a male band) and I don't buy the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at all (the crazy outfits alone make it all about Karen O -- the other guys are wallflowers by comparison). I'm still not sure either way on Sleigh Bells but am leaning toward your argument as both those guys are getting a lot of attention nowadays. I threw Warpaint out there because I was listening to them at the time, and even after seeing them live twice I still can't determine one leader of the band, or someone who will break out on their own. They're very cohesive as a group. I do, however, see your point about the YYYs. I can't even name the two guys in the group, so they shouldn't have even have been typed for this. And (once again based on the live test) Alexis from Sleigh Bells is egoless, and Derek is the showman of the two. Alexis might suck you in with her voice but Derek is keeping you there.

Sonic Youth is a yes and no for me. I've always considered Thurston Moore the leader of the band, but whenever Kim sang vocals, she was featured very prominently in the videos for those songs...specifically Kool Thing and Bull in the Heather.

I have to throw some salt for a moment. Gwen Steffani and No Doubt made a point of lampooning female singers and their overshadowing the rest of the band in a music video for Don't Speak in 96. That video was a dramatization of the real-life jealousy the rest of the band felt after an issue of Spin magazine came out with just a photo of Gwen on the cover. Oh, and aside from that one dicknose with Hear/Say (who repeatedly referred to her as such while reviewing Swoon, but that paper's not known for its copy editing anyways), no one's assuming Nikki Moninger is the singer or frontwoman for Silversun Pickups.Until I saw the video for "Lazy Eye", I assumed the Silversun Pickups had a female lead singer.

Really? I never thought the silversun pickups singer sounded all that feminine in the few songs I've heard by them.

You'd be excused, though... you're not a professional music critic whose job it is to know who's in the band and what they do in it. Oh, and Portishead's out if we're not counting bands where the female member in question actively rejects the spotlight. Beth Gibbons doesn't do interviews... I remember one where she showed up for some part of it, then left before the interview started.

Jenny Lewis overshadows all who are around her. Hell, she over shadowed herself on her solo stuff.

Yes and no. While she was in the band Anneke did overshadow the others, but the band have coped ably since she went solo.

Talking Heads
David Byrne was always the main focus of the band.
