What was the story here?
They played Under the Bridge on SNL and it sounds like garbage.
Looks like Frusciate is playing the song differently than he should and then starts screaming at the end chorus.

"[Frusciante] was experimenting the way he would have if we'd been rehearsing the tune. Well we weren't. We were on live TV in front of millions of people and it was torture. I started singing in what I thought was the key he was playing in. I felt like I was getting stabbed in the back and hung out to dry in front of all of America while this guy was off in a corner in the shadow, playing some dissonant out-of-tune experiment."

Towards the end, he looks like he would shoot him if he could get away with it.

that was a break in the middle of a European tour where John was apparently playing differently every single night and quit the band about 3 months later

It sounds like John's trying to climb into the Leslie rotating speaker effect he's drowning his guitar with. (For the most part, he's at least playing something resembling the right chords, although maybe not necessarily in the right order...) And you can't even try to defend what he's doing on that end chorus...*shudder*
WOW. That musta been a lot of smack you were on back then, bro-bama. I'm glad you cleaned up. Really. He's such a talented guitarist, one of the best still alive.

just to give another opinion the performance. this comes from a RHCP fan site that has setlists for almost every RHCP live performance ever
"One of the most famous performance ever of the band. John improvised a lot and even screamed towards the end instead of doing his backing vocals. Anthony later confessed he felt like he was stabbed in the back in front of all America. He is also convinced that John was playing out of key that night which is wrong if you listen carefully to their performance."

I just figured he was on heroin during the performance.

Yeah this was one of the things that led to John leaving and apparently he was doing this a lot during that time.
