I've been out of work since Late June/early July.
My wife called me about a half hour after she left for work crying. She lost her job. She had only been there for three months because the salon she was working at prior, closed down with ZERO warning.
MERRY f***ING CHRISTMAS.

I told her at least she's home today and we can spend the day together, but that doesn't pay the bills. Good thing was he gave her final paycheck today despite just getting paid on Friday, so that helps, but yea...

Sucks to hear.
My parents went through a similar thing around 2003 when they were both let go from their jobs in the same month. Luckily my mother got a new job rather quickly (although it was a couple of steps down from her previous position). They had to cut back on things for a bit, but they survived.
Hope things work out for you.

Little more to add to the story, including a bizarre twist.
She was let go because her boss said she wasn't fast enough. Even though she NEVER takes a day off work, always comes in early, stays late, and comes in on her day off. She also had a high ticket average, meaning she sold hair products in addition to just cutting/styling hair.
A few minutes ago her boss just called her. He said that they need a receptionist at another location one day a week. She'll take it just so we have SOMETHING coming in.
BTW, I get unemployment, and she probably will now too.

Not that I'm knowledgeable about stuff like this or anything, but how can she collect unemployment AND work part time? I mean, I hope she can for your guys sake, since the money would help you. I'm just curious.

One day a week as a secretary?
That hardly even seems worth the gas money to go in.

The state of IL sets a limit on the amount you can make on unemployment. You can work and collect unemployment as long as your income is lower than your unemployment earnings. They subtract the amount of money you make from your unemployment.
Example using simple numbers.
Unemployment pays you $100 a week. Part time job makes you $20 a week. Your unemployment check will now be $80.
In the end it all comes down to the same amount of money each week.
The reason she is taking the job is because she may end back up full time. Who knows? Also, she's able to get out of the house and feel like she's doing something rather than just sitting around doing nothing.
I occasionally do freelance work for the same reason while trying to find a full time job.

Bear in mind, I have not dealt with unemployment in 7 years and it was in a different state than you, so what I have to say may not be relevant for you. There is a preference to get people to work part time jobs. As an incentive, you can earn a small percentage of you allotment without it getting counted against you. I will use the income that I got from unemployment as an example: Amount paid when no part time work was done: $360/week Amount made on part time job one week: $136 Amount paid in unemployment benefits that week: $260 (360 - (136 - 10% * 360))

Sorry to hear that man. Might I suggest applying for a job with Acosta Sales and Marketing. I just got on with them. Right now they are hiring for people in the Chicago area, as part time merchandisers. Its at least 32 hours a week and you get to pick and choose what jobs you want to take. They are paying me $11/hr. www.acosta.com

I hope you guys find something soon. What a terrible time to lose one's job, but I know from personal experience that the market thins out after Christmas as businesses eliminate jobs after the holiday rush. You two will be in my thoughts, man.

Sucks to hear, especially at this time of the year.
Do either of you have a reliable car? I'd suggest looking for a pizza delivery job if things don't get better soon. I know it sounds like a lame-ass job, but in a good market you can make some good daily cash. I used to deliver in my town which is pretty small, and would easily make $30-40 a day. That was after the economy got so bad though. Back in 2005-2006 I would be pissed if I made less than $50, and sometimes made over $100 on a friday or saturday night. This was in addition to my regular paycheck, but not counting the gas that I would burn through. Anyway, in my experience it's fairly easy to get hired as a driver since it requires a car/driver's license/good MVR history it's not as competitive as other low level jobs.
EDIT: Also, have you both been through college? If not, this would be a good time to start. You could find a good technical college, apply for the Pell grant, and get some decent financial aid money while going to school. Though I'm not sure if there's any kind of state grants/scholarships where you live (ie. the hope scholarship/grant in Georgia which pays for my tuition, meaning if I got Pell grant it'd be spent on whatever I want)

This is good advice; in high school I was a pizza delivery driver in a midsize (yet pizza deficient) town, and once made $800 over one (admittedly stressful) week.

You could make a killing as a waiter. Maybe not in the this month or next, but spring and summer are gold mines. Best of all, there's always some place that's hiring.
