Anybody ever read up on the 1883 volcano eruption? Very interesting stuff. I have been very fascinated with it after taking a ferry ride from West Java to Sumatra back in 2003. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KrakatoaThe island exploded in 1883, killing approximately 40,000 people, although some estimates put the death toll much higher. The explosion is still considered to be the loudest sound ever heard in modern history, with reports of it being heard nearly 3,000 miles (4,828 km) from its point of origin.

I have a huge interest in volcanos, and would love to be a volcanologist (money and lack of realistically stable employment oppertunities put paid to that), so Krakatoa is one of my favourite subjects, along with Vesuvius and the Yellowstone supervolcano.

I read a book about it a few years back and it was very interesting. I think it was called "Crack in the World" by Simon Winchester.

Krakatoa is interesting, but there is also Mt. Tambora that had quite the eruption 80 years before Krakatoa.
Interesting that another volcano is rising from what is left of the old one.

That guy did some major research. Makes me never want to move to San Francisco. It is amazing that so many politicians and businessmen have blood on their hands if/when another big one hits SF like in 1906. They lied to the people and claimed it was a fire to get investors back into the city. When in actuality it was a huge earthquake that triggered the fires.

Yes sir, and it has already grown 1,600 meters since the 1920`s! Tambora is very interesting. Have you ever read about Lake Toba? It is a huge caldera that formed into a lake. I am hoping to visit there some day while in Indonesia. It is so beautiful and not very touristy at all.

I remember reading somewhere that sailors on a relatively nearby ship were deafened, at least temporarily by the noise of the explosion as it burst their eardrums.
I can't get my head around how loud it must have been. It's like trying to put a billion pounds/dollars into context, your head just can't process the scale.

It`s amazing that people that were as far away as Madagascar heard the sounds. They thought it was cannons being fired from a distance.
