I got a Blu-Ray player for Christmas, and was trying to decide what to pick up to start my Blu-Ray collection.
Step 1 is adding Blu-Ray to my Netflix Account Step 2 is purchasing must haves
Any recommendations on what movies really benefit from the HD upgrade?

My first, and the one I recommend to everyone who's new to Blu Ray...."Blade Runner". Holy shit, it looks incredible.

seconding Blade Runner. The original Halloween was a pretty snazzy transfer. As was North by Northwest. Right now I have "Milk", "The Aviator", and "Million Dollar Baby" with me, but I'm watching them on my laptop as opposed to by TV right now, so I can't really judge Picture Quality as well as normally would be able to.
For classic and foreign films(and some contemporary ones mixed in), The Criterion Collection puts out the best releases, but they're kinda pricey brand new, and often go out of print(which drives the price up big-time).
As far as essential television, The Twilight Zone has received amazing treatment, however, there are technical issues with many of the discs in Season 1, and Image entertainment has yet to officially address it, and for some people it just seems to go away eventually.

The last Rambo movie. It is so nice to see that kind of carnage in Blu Ray. And I can recommend the Planet Earth series from the BBC.
Congrats on upgrading your Netflix account. Every Blu Ray disc I've gotten from them have been in impeccable condition.

Every Blu Ray disc I've gotten from them have been in impeccable condition. I think I've had one netflix BD come damaged, but it wasn't a huge inconvenience, and that's a much smaller number than the faulty DVDs I'd get.

I JUST watched the entire Planet Earth series on DVD a month ago. Maybe I'll check out one of the other BBC HD Nature Eye-Candy shos like Blue Planet or Life.
Good call on Criterion. Seven Samurai is one of my favorite films - probably my favorite film that I don't already own.
Is it worth upgrading movies you own? I was thinking about picking up the BR of Fifth Element, Dark City, or Dune (probably not, since they don't have the extended cut)

I'm slowing upgrading my collection to BR and I'll say the best ones I've seen so far have been Inception, Fight Club, and the Toy Story collection.

As for upgrading, there are a few notable ones in my collection that I am wanting to upgrade but have yet to pull the trigger on (2001:ASO, Sin City, The Godfather Trilogy are the main three). Might rent them on NF to see just how significant the upgrades are.

That's better than the games I used to rent from a local place for the Ps one that looked like they had been skipped down a gravel road ...

If you have the money, the Alien Quadrilogy. Holy crap! I agree. Watched Alien and Aliens and they look fantastic. It's on sale this week at Best Buy for $75.

Both Iron Mans look GREAT on the format.
Also, The Shining (1980) and The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) are two GREAT examples of classic film on the format.
However, the movie Predator has been f***ed up TWICE on the format, with one copy being too grainy/no special features while the other had all of its grain scrubbed away (DVNR) and has all the 2-disc special features from the DVD.
