e? I've been told by a guy that used to work at Wal Mart and now manages a Dollar Store that they are pretty much staying open on holidays because Wal Mart is. Is it this, or the economy sucks so bad that everyone wants to make that extra dolla dolla?
If the economy gets better will businesses start giving people time off again?

in effect because of the economy, but this year, at least in my area, proved that even on holidays, if you're open, people will come to your stores, as business on X-mas (Eve) was a lot of the region's department/big box stores' better weekends of the year, so I bet it'll be a continuing trend, in retail.

Must be different where you guys live. Where I live, everything was closed on Christmas day. Everything. And that includes the WalMart. That's saying something, considering that in all the seven or eight years they've been here, I've never seen them closed.

I'm at work right now.
I expect to get NYE's off, but I guess they'll just have to settle for me posting here all day instead of actually working.

The only thing open here on Christmas was Denny's. My bank closed literally four minutes before I got there today; I arrived at 1:04 to find out they closed at 1:00. Lots of government buildings are closed, but some retail stores and most gas stations are open.

It's New Year's Eve. Exactly how is it different from any other friday night, aside from that feeling you can make a difference with your life?

I work at a movie theatre and we're open all the time. We never close at all even on holidays.
The economy is one thing and most of your managers, home offices, and other corporations care about money and the importance of holidays has been lost. Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, 4th of July, and New Years Day have all lost what those particular days represent.
Now it's all about the consumer and about what the business can gain from it. It's a shame and I don't agree with it. On Christmas everything was closed except for us, IHOP, Huddle House, Waffle House, and Walgreens.

Don't know about you, but none of the places around here have ever been closed on the 4th of July(save federal buildings) and Easter(federal buildings don't count, since they're always closed on Sundays). Not a new trend around here to have the stores open those days.

I'm pissed because in Evansville Indiana they have decided to make the kids go to school on Martin Luther King Jr. day because of snow. Out of all the days they have off anyway, they take that away and that is not right in my book. Yes, one can argue "How many people really go out and do anything to remember him?" but this is still really wrong.

I think the reason that movie theaters stay open on Christmas is because of the unusual practice of having movies open on Christmas day. First time i remember this happening was way back in 1990 with the Christmas day premiere of Godfather 3, of all things (though it may have happened even before that).

The irony in that is that they'll do more at school for kids to remember him than the kids would by themselves at home with a day off. You know its true. Besides, with the way the weather has been lately, I'm expecting a blizzard here by the the time MLK day arrives. So the kids around here will probably be making up more days by the end of the school year.

Not a new trend around here to have the stores open those days. Well, for me personally I used to live in California. My parents were in the air force and while everything was closed on the base, we would go off base and see similar results. Growing up it seemed businesses respected holidays and they actually had meaning then.

We don't discriminate, we elaborate on all the great deals you can find...for THREE DAYS ONLY! Credit here is 'Free At Last'! Let freedom ring from the mountain tops and come to Mattress City!" This King fellow sounds like quite a salesman. *** But, yeah, it's just a sign of the times, that no holiday goes untouched. I've said it before, but Sundays used to be DEAD. NOTHING was open, save for one little neighborhood store. Not a gas station, nor a convenience store, nor a shopping center. Money's got to be made.

Actually, the soft economy is the only reason that we've gotten Holidays off in my department for 3 years. Usually they have us work round the clock on the Holidays, except for the management and admin people. But my company has done all it can to put the screws to the common workers for the past 5 years or so.
In my old department they were working us like dogs one year (luckily I left it) and people weren't getting any time off. When they brought it to the attention of their department head, she told them that there were 200 people lined up outside of the plant waiting for their job, and if they didn't like it they could quit.
They also had a plant tour come through and the customer asked us if we liked the cookout. When we looked at him quizically, he told us that they were so happy with the job us employees did getting all of their material out, that they sent a bunch of money up so that the workers could have a cookout as a way of saying thanks. The workers never had a cookout, but the management and admin team had a golf outing.
So yeah, they're doing what they can to bend their employees over but they keep dangling the "If you don't like it, try and get a job somewhere else." line. And then they wonder why we take a snork it attitude with them from time to time.
