I didn't include the Justice League movies, but otherwise I wanted to get them all. No sense jsut limiting it to the theatrical ones, after all.
Motivated to do this by the fact now having the full set of Batman the Animated Series puts me in a Batman mood (Batmood?). Was just going to do the 60's, Burton / Schumacher, Nolan, and Phantasm ones with an Other option, but then learned that Under the Red Hood actually has the best Rotten Tomatoes score of the bunch so went for all of them.
Myself... I'm pretty split between Under the Red Hood and Dark Knight. But I might reserve judgment until I watch Mask of the Phantasm - I've had the DVD for awhile since Wal-Mart was selling it for five dollars, but not watched it.

Begins. Perfect structure. TDK is almost as good, but it has a few loose plot-strands. The whole Gordon storyline has a great start and end, but it just... comes unravelled when you stop to think how little sense it makes.

TDK will win this one.
But my vote goes with Batman 1989.

Batman Returns was my favorite, even with the camp. The Dark Knight wasn't bad, but I thought the last 30 minutes or so (really, everything after Dent became Two-Face) should have been saved for another movie.

Hey, deep love and respect to the Nolan movies, but we would not even be seriously talking about Batman without Burton's original in 1989. I'm still proud of Michael Keeton making the doubters eat their words by doing a GOOD Batman and Bruce Wayne combo. Plus, add in the Elfman score and you have a classic.

I am going to be in the minority and say that I liked "Batman Begins" better than "The Dark Knight". Okay okay okay, let me explain. Don't get me wrong, The Dark Knight was great, but I think a lot of people are giving that movie too much credit because of Ledger's performance, which was great, no denying that, but I liked Begins better because it showed Bruce Wayne when he was going through all of that training and the fact that Ra's Al Ghul was the villain all along and a lot of the chaos that Gotham went through via the hallucinations from the toxins from Scarecrow.
As for animated movies, I have only seen Mask of the Phantasm, but I want to see the other ones, so MotP wins in this category.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm It's better then any of the live action films I agree. Less plot holey, less moments wrecking suspension of disbelief (Begins and Dark Knight get less and less plausible with every viewing), and way more emotional impact.

The whole Gordon storyline has a great start and end, but it just... comes unravelled when you stop to think how little sense it makes. Cracked.com made a chart of joker's plans. It seemed extremely overly complicated for really no apparent reason when you look at it.(although I still like the movie) The joker could have accomplished the same thing about Harvey by just shooting Rachael.

The whole Gordon storyline has a great start and end, but it just... comes unravelled when you stop to think how little sense it makes. When it comes to live-action, I agree. Batman Begins is the first movie that really "got it" when it comes to Batman. I will say though that since the poll included animated films, my vote went to Under the Red Hood. It's easily the most true-to-character Batman movie ever released. I've never been a big fan of Mask of the Phantasm due to the fact that Andrea Beaumont basically undermines the death of Bruce's parents. Bruce literally says "it doesn't hurt as much anymore", then doesn't decide to become Batman until he gets dumped. I really hated that.

I'm torn between Begins, TDK, and Forever. I will have to think on it and come back later.

1- Batman (1966) 2- Batman (1989) 3- Batman Returns 4- The Dark Knight 5- Batman Begins 6- Batman Forever 7- Legends of the Superheroes (I'm counting it) 8- The second Batman serial 9- The first Batman serial
128,459 - Batman and Robin. Everything a Batman film shouldn't be.

The other snag I have with TDK is that, while I love it, it's a film about Gotham rather than Batman.

The other snag I have with TDK is that, while I love it, it's a film about Gotham rather than Batman. That's the problem with most of the live-action Batman films. The only one that's really been all about Batman was Begins. My major gripe with The Dark Knight is that Batman has no resolve, and basically regresses in character. In Batman Begins, they establish that he'd been gone for nearly a decade training and learning to come back and save Gotham. When The Dark Knight begins, he's already fussing about wanting to hang it up and stop being Batman. Do they mean to tell me that this guy spent eight years training to do something, then wants to quit six months into what he trained for? That'd be like going through medical school, then quitting your job as a doctor after six months.
