Ever have any of those friends parents who don't really act their age and try more to be friends with their kids rather than parents? I put cool in quotes because some of them take it too far and are irresponsible, but some of them are actually pretty nice.
One of my friends had a real messed up family and his mom would swear at him all the time. However, on the flip side she let him get away with murder. When we were somewhere around nine or ten we were listening to the album "They're All Gonna Laugh at You!" by Adam Sandler and his mom came in to fold laundry. The mom was surprised how much I was laughing at it because I was always so polite and everything. I remember one of the skits playing was Adam Sandler at the movie theater talking about how the popcorn tasted like someone jizzed on it. Well, at least she wasn't there when "A Medium Pace" came on.
Then I had another friend, who's mom would buy us tons of near beers and drink them with us when we were in our early teens (I think 13 or 14). No one ever got too drunk, but I thought it was kind of messed up when she started smoking pot with her son.

I would think, one of the cooler things a parent could do, is not hang out once they got to know their kids' friends. Some seem to be clueless on that level and just embarrass their kids because they don't leave them alone

I have no problem with my "Cool Parent" credentials beginning and ending with video games.

A friend of mine in school, her Mother would always sit in the room with us when we were at her house and participate in the gossip etc. She came off so much worse than any of the other parents, because she was just trying way, WAY too hard.

I had some friends who had cool parents. They were the type of cool parents who bought us alcohol and let us partake in illegal activities. At the time, I wanted to be like that as a parent. Now that I am a parent, I could never be that way. Those friends of mine are still working at go nowhere jobs with no education because their parents didn't want to lose their coolness.

I always thought it was douchey. The ones who spend more time trying to be "cool" and be friends with their kids more then actual parents, usually end up with losers for kids that are irresponsible, and don't react well to authority.

My Dad can't really be described as cool but a few school friends said they wished their Dad's were more like mine as he watched wrestling (a lot during the attitude era but rarely now), goes to football (which included taking me to away matches) and is into movies. Luckily as they were genuine interests he didn't come off as one of "those" parents so it wasn't too bad although at the time I wasn't that keen on my friends and Dad talking at all.
It's only as I've gotten older that I've realised that I'm was pretty lucky as we could/can bond over shared interests whereas my friends often had nothing in common with their parents.

How coolness became a superior value to, providing an example how an adult must behave and keeping one's child on the straight and narrow, is one of the curiousities of our age.

Both my parents are like that, but can be very strict at times

My parents were "cool" with me, but were responsible parents at the same time. I think that's the best way to go, be cool with your kids but don't be so lax on your parenting that they end up troublemakers. That's IMO at least...

I get told quite a bit by friends that my parents are cool, mainly because they keep up with current events & celebrities & my dad plays video games & stuff.

This is just anecdotal evidence but:
One of my best friends was raised mostly by a single dad who let him curse, drink, and smoke cigarettes and pot as a teenager. After graduating high school he went straight to technical school and earned a degree in web design, has always had a steady job, car, and home. Seems to live a very happy life.
Another of my best friends was raised mostly by a single dad who didn't let him get away with so much in front of him, but didn't really care what he did. Meaning that he would spend all of his time as a teenager getting drunk and smoking pot/cigarettes with his friends. He's now married with a good job, reliable vehicle, and a nice home.
I was raised by my mom and stepfather. Was not allowed to do much. Definitely no swearing, smoking or drinking during my teen years. I'm now the same age as those two friends, but I still live with my parents, have no job and no car. I did get in school about a year ago though. I've also been put in jail twice, and I'm still dealing with an arrest from 2008.
WTF?! By all basic logic, the roles should be reversed. I mean, I made much better grades than my friends in high school, and partied WAAAY less both as a teen and as an adult. Also have/had better manners..

My parents were really relaxed with me, but not "cool" in the douchey sense really.
For starters, they were married very young (16 & 17). By the time I was that age, they knew my bro was doing some drugs and stealing so as long as I was somewhat better behaved. I could stay out until past midnight on school nights, far past that on weekends. I could smoke cigars, we even used our backyard for a few of our backyard wrestling shows.

My parents were always strict with alcohol/drugs as a teen, but the summer before i went to college, they were more lenient on that. Now everytime i come home and my parents catch us drinking, they just take away my friends car keys and make them sleep over.

One partiular lady comes to mind. A girlfriend of mine in high school had a piece of work for a mother. Bought cigarettes, beer, and whatever. She bought her daughter condoms! So, so wrong. We were 16 for crying out loud. A reasonable parent would have sat down two 16 year olds and made the gravity of the situation very clear.
Instead, I got a box of condoms and an assurance that she would "leave the house for awhile" so her daughter and I could "have some time".
I mean, at the time, I was like, "this is AWESOME!!!!", but looking back, I'm astonished at the sheer stupidity of the situation.

Its usually the strict parents whos children cant wait to run out and enjoy all the forbidden delights so its probably in the best interest of parents to not put them on a leash AND to take some interest in their lives. You dont have to buy alcohol and cigarettes for your kids to be "cool".

My dad on smoking pot after I came home with puffy eyes and ate a box of cookies...
"I tried it once in high school so I know it isn't really that big of a deal. Just don't ever come home high again, don't get into anything stupid, and if you get caught by the cops you're on your own."
I was SHOCKED at that reaction, because he seemed like a guy who wouldn't tolerate hippie bullshit. Built garages for a living, loves Ronald Reagan and thought Red from That 70's Show was a petty awesome guy. On the other hand, he was also a big sci-fi nerd.
Never thought about it, but my dad is an interesting guy.
