Has there ever been an instance in films where a major star appears in a film as an extra? Im not talking about early roles, im talking about already-established stars. Like, for a hypothetical example, someone like say tom hanks shown drinking coffee in the background of a major scene. I think it would be a neat concept myself, a way for actors to add to their filmography without taking the focus away from the true star(s) of the film.

All the time. Arnold in The Rundown springs to mind.

I thought Scott Pilgrim was pretty good in casting somewhat prominent actors in rather bit roles.

Michael Myers in Inglorious Basterds. Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder I'd say Tom had a pretty big role in TT. Im thinking more along the lines of Tom Jane in Spider Man 2 (where you can barely see him in the background).

One of my favorites was in the episode of the Office where Michael is in New York, talking about how he hopes he sees some celebrities in the city, then runs off thinking he sees someone famous, and as he goes off, the cameraman catches Conan O'Brien walking by. Michael never even sees him.

Glenn Close in Hook, as a pirate.
I would love to see a movie with an extra in it who people say looks like, I dunno, Christopher Walken. When he is shown, it's obviously Walken with a beard, or a monocle, but no-one acknowledges it.

Ok, looks like we need to define the terms. An extra is someone without any lines, often not the focus of the attention in the scene. Most people seem to be saying cameos.

Mindf***! Anthony Daniels in Star Wars: Episode II. He plays a fancy pants guy in the first sequence, the bar scene part.
