I don't necessarily mean short-lived sitcoms. For example Undeclared only lasted one season, but the finale had the main character getting the girl he was after for the whole show so it at least had some climatic ending. Undeclared actually did end on a normal episode, and an incredibly bizarre one at that. Apatow was so pissed about being cancelled, he centered the final episode around Eric, a supporting character. The main cast barely appears in the finale, and simply watch TV and dye their hair. Are you sure that was the last one that aired/was produced? I remember one episode where the main character got the girl he was always after was promoted as the finale.

I don't think a lot of those late 60s/early 70s sitcoms had special final episodes (Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeanie, Gilligan's Island). There was a finale to Gilligan's Island, they got rescued and somehow manage to end up stranded on that same island again. Dummies.

The second one they got rescued again, then Mr. Howell decides to make an island resort, turning it into a modified version of Fantasy Island. Was suppossed to be the start of a new series, but never took off. The third had the Harlem Globetrotters playing basketball against robots.

Knowing Family Matters, if they did, they'd have had Myrtle Urkel being married to that cop robot Steve made, or something. Okay, so I totally undershot this one. ...man, holy shit.

Did I Love Lucy have one? Was the final episode the one where she was the statue?

At one point during the series' final season, Laura agrees to accompany Steve to a polka festival, where — instead of becoming annoyed once and for all at Steve's interests and larger-than-life friends — she realizes that Urkel is the man her heart was after all along. The two are eventually engaged, but not until after Laura makes a heart-wrenching decision on whether to marry the nerd or Stefan. Laura chose Steve over Stefan, and the alter-ego was retired and never seen again. In the series' finale, when Steve goes into outer space (and his well-being is in jeopardy), Laura constantly watches television reports about the endangered space mission. Eventually, Steve salvages the space mission and returns home to his first (and only) love: Laura. Laura makes Steve promise never to go into outer space again, to which Steve replies, "Only when we kiss, Laura Lee," would he do so. Damn, talk about jumping the shark. That show just totally lost its sanity and took its newfound INsanity to the most absurd of extremes! Glad I stopped watching that piece of crap before it came to THAT!

Okay, so I totally undershot this one. ...man, holy s***. Given how that show was, this might count as ending on a "regular episode".

Did Night Court have a special final episode? If it did I don't recall it.

Family Matters to this day I can't remember this sitcom having an ending Knowing Family Matters, if they did, they'd have had Myrtle Urkel being married to that cop robot Steve made, or something. I wonder what would have happened if they did another season, and how they would have handled the actress that played Urkel psychotic ex girlfriend death. How would she had been written off the show?

Did Night Court have a special final episode? If it did I don't recall it. Yeah, but it was largely considered horrible by just about everyone involved. I haven't seen it since it first aired, but from what I remember Christine wins a seat in the State Senate and leaves the court. Dan decides to leave to to follow/stalk her. Oh, and Bull leaves Earth forever to go into space with aliens. And never bothers to mention his wife when he does this.

I don't know if these can be consider sitcoms but Get Smart. They never had a finale.
And Police Squad, a great series that had no finale, though I don't know if it was a sitcom.

It's a shame, she was very likable. That is way too young to die.

Does Red Dwarf count? {Spoiler}At the end of Back to Earth, they find out they're under the influence of the Despair Squid, so it's back to trudging through deep space again. Both Craig Charles and Chris Barrie have confirmed there are plans for a new series, so time will tell on that one.

Remember the end of season six when they were going through these "unreality" pockets that warp reality and make Lister and the rest of the crew think he's an android, for example? I'd make everything that happened from discovering the time drive onwards a result of these unreality pockets. Bit of a copour but that means that the crappy final two seasons and Back To Earth never happened.

Boondocks not having anything special happen in the last episode was a shame.
Especially since they knew going in it would be the final season.
Even worse when you consider how epic the trailer was for it

Maybe. It's not decided yet, but they were already considering ending the show with the third season long before the season started airing and there's been no progress on making up their minds. That's usually a recipe for a show being over.
