He's one of my favorite Disney villians and all but I still dont get why his first wish was to rule as sultan. I dont get how that wish worked. All he really did was wear the attire of the sultan. Does wearing the Sultan's clothes instantly make you in charge of the land??
If the sultan disappeared and then Jafar was sultan then yeah that would have made sense. But besides a change of wardrobe that was pretty much a wasted wish on his part. Or he at least should have gotten another wish since he was no sold.
Jafar's "run" as the sultan didnt even last two minutes as he became the most powerful sorcerer in the world simply because he didnt get bowed to.

For that matter, Aladdin wishing to be a prince seemed to only involve getting fancy clothes. Jafar revealing the deception shouldn't revoke his status as prince, he wished specifically to be one, not just look like one.
Maybe genies can only grant wishes in a half-assed fashion.

It was more revenge and humiliation towards the Sultan.

Actually, after the wish, Aladdin's origins changed, he was now from Minnesota, and loved purple. It also explains the clothes.

Well in Arab folklore genies (or jinn) are supposed to be evil. The wishes they granted in those original stories would bite the wishers on their ass more often than not. DAMN YOU ROBIN WILLIAMS!

I'm still wondering how he was no longer a Genie after death for that Hercules TV series episode he appeared in.

Well technically speaking, in the third movie, it was revealed that Aladdin's Dad was "The King of Thieves". So Aladdin could be considered "The Prince of Thieves". So it's possible that Genie set up Aladdin's Dad as King of Thieves off-screen to make Aladdin a de-facto prince. I'm still wondering how he was no longer a Genie after death for that Hercules TV series episode he appeared in. I guess it's open to interpretation, but I'm willing to accept death as a revocation for the wish.

Genie, for my final wish, I wish that there were never direct to video sequels to this movie!
I didn't mind them, but it stood on its own, and the tv series did plenty.

Ah, but without "Return of Jafar", there wouldn't have even BEEN a TV series, since that movie was the pilot for it! And explained why Iago was living in the castle and not still stuck in the lamp.

I think it even introduced the character of Abis Mal, who is probably Aladdin's most consistent nemesis in the series, though I did find Mozenrath and more interesting and of course more credible threats.

You'd be correct. Though Abis Mal's personality was slightly different in the movie. Easy to understand...it was a pilot. And yeah, Mozenrath and Mirage were better villains for Aladdin.

Another point of defense for Return of Jafar, it did serve as a platform for Gilbert Gottfried's lovely singing.

Aziz is another cool villain, but he only got two episodes that I can remember and he's not as memorable as Mozenrath or Mirage. Think the fakir that gets turned into a demon and blames Aladdin. Though I don't know why, he changed a lot less than his companions did in appearance and actually welcomed the powers it granted him, anyway.

While talking about Aladdin spinoffs, I just have to mention that the game for the Mega Drive was fantastic. One of the best video game adaptations ever.
