I am a 35 year old redhead (which is about as white as a person can get). I teach some college courses and had students of mine never guess my age right because they think that I look and sound younger than I am. People who get to know me think that I am older than I am because of the way that I talk, the fact that there is little that I am completely ignorant on, have kids that are in high school, and just seem wiser than I really am. It is funny that no one thinks that I sound like I should either.

I kind of understand what she's sayin though. I know plenty of very very well educated black folks that still sound black. Y'know, it's not the words they use just the way their voice sounds. But at the same time I know black dudes that sound whiter than I do when they talk. It has nothing to do with intelligence really.

He makes Bryant Gumbel look like Malcolm X. And will choke a bitch. "It was MOONY!!!!!!!!!!!" I think the OP should arrange a date with this woman and then he should hire C. Thomas Howell to learn everything the 2 of them have discussed online and then send him as is proxy in black face and basically revive his character from Soul Man

Without being offensive, it's still rather telling that people expect someone to sound a certain way. From both sides.
As you can imagine, I run into the same problem often.

I do notice that big time wrestling fans talk the same. I think we have our own accent.

Yeah, I get flack for not "sounding Black" all the time too, along with my personal dress code and favorite types of music.
F*** em.
If it's really that big of a hang-up for the chick, she'll wash out very soon. Or, as I've discovered, a lot of females actually like that, and enjoy the tone of my voice. It's whatever.

Man I hate the idea of a black person "not being black enough".

I kinda get the same problem, except it isn't a question of my race, it is a question of my country of origin, as my voice, as anyone here who has heard it can vouch, does not sound American. It sounds like I am from somewhere in Europe, more specifically from around the British Isles. didnt you post a video of you being interviewed on a local tv news show?

Bang her and forget her, Rinse and repeat as necessary. QFT. I'd ask to sig this if I didn't have my whole vampire-chick gimmick. ;D I'd like to see the "blackest" black guys get away with these moves:

I get the opposite. I sounds very "white" I guess, but I have a really deep voice.
I did some backround vocals in a friend's song, and sounded less white guy like I assume. Our friend Fin said when he heard it, " Wait, who here is friends with a giant black guy?"

I had that problem when I first met a Jamacian. "Why does she sound Scottish?"
But in all fairness, the Negro Dialect is a pretty well established thing in American English. Most African American communities migrated from the south during the last seven decades, and are largely not intergrated with the white population. That they have developed their own manner of speaking is not at all unusual. It's not unlike the Amish, who have unique accents, or Yiddish, a varient of German spoken by Jews living in closed societies. If you didn't learn to speak under those circumstances, you probably don't have an accent, and if your primary exposure to blacks is to urban blacks living in segregrated areas, then you probably expect black people to have an accent.

I get commented on that. Apparently I'm supposed to barely be able to speak English or have a heavy accent and jump fences really well. Or some other racist stereotype. That's really what people mean after all. You don't sound/look/act like a X = You do not match up to my preconceived stereotype therefore I must assume you're an exception and not a common representation of "your" people in the environment you grew up in. Which leads me to the voice thing. I've had people tell me I sound like a complete redneck on the phone, who have never said so in person. But with the disconnect I guess they notice, and act surprised. I grew up in a redneck town with English speaking siblings. I could count the non-white people in my schools on one hand. Why wouldn't I speak exactly like all my friends and everyone I pretty much ever met? It's not like I popped out of the womb with a sombrero and an accent. But to be honest it really doesn't bother 99% of the time. Oh I particular liked it when a guy told me that I wasn't "like you know a real Mexican." It seemed his idea of a real Mexican was someone who wears traditional Mexican clothes, drives a van and lives in a small apartment with at least 7 other Mexicans. I just laughed.

I knew a few guys from West Africa, and if you talked to them over the phone, you`d think that they were British white men. Like somebody else said earlier, you sound like those you grew up around. If race relations are good, then the accent is relatively the same.

So I met this girl on a dating site yesterday and we talked and she gave me her number so eventually I called her we talked for a bit and then she asked if I really was the person whose profile she looked at because to her my voice doesnt match my appearance. I dont sound like a "black" person whatever that means. So I said to her well sorry I actually went to school and graduated so sorry if I dont sound like the part. Maybe I should have said yo, boo, & honeydip alot more. I'm not offended just easily amused because this is the second person who has said this to me. I dont sound and talk like a black guy. Alrighty then!!!!!! Oh mate - I had that said to me when I showed up for a job interview after talking to my prospective boss the day before I showed up. (I got it, by the way). I've been told this on numerous occasions and unlike you - who seem to have a great deal more patience that I have - it has always p*issed me off. What am I supposed to sound like??!! I guess that it doesn't help that my favourite all-time band is Motorhead and that I'm not a big reggae fan......?
