With the upcoming US version of Being Human (that's the show in my sig btw) looking completely terrible and the US remake f Skins looking just as bad, are there any US remakes of British shows that have actually worked? Because aside from The Office I can't think of one. Life On Mars, Coupling, three, yes three, versions of Fawlty Towers all of which have failed. And the less said about the proposed version of Doctor Who starring David Hasselhoff the better.

To be fair they're all terrible shows in Britain too.
Except the US Office is actually good.

I can only think of The Office and the talent shows that Simon Cowell pumps out here on a monthly basis. I would say Big Brother, but that was the Netherlands first. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire was British first, I believe.
But yeah, most would probably be non-sitcoms.

Did you know they were going to make a US version of: The IT Crowd.
Richard Ayoade was going to reprise his role of Moss. And in the Roy role...... Joel McHale. Now I like Joel McHale but I don't think he could play a nerd.
Anyway, never made it past the pilot.

i recall an interview with Nigel where he said the most shameful thing hes ever done was a pilot for an american version of the young ones. and how happy he was it never got picked up. they only had him back playing Neil Pye and everybody else were new american characters. i kinda hope to one day see the pilot for the american young ones just to see if it was the train wreck Nigel said it was.

So...apparently there was only one episode of "The Young Ones" produced and filmed for U.S. audiences. "Oh No! Not THEM!".
I would like to see more.

There's a clip of the U.S. version of Spaced on Youtube. It is dreadful. They take some of the lines from the original, but drain them of all their humour via dreary delivery, and characters are altered, with Mike being reduced to a generic 'sidekick' guy who likes to eat and play Gears of War, rather than being a T.A. nut who once stole a tank and tried to invade Paris.

The greatest sitcom ever cannot be 12 episodes long. It was good, but its typical of us Brits to overrate the hell out of something, the same way people call The Office a minimalist and realist miracle of TV genius, despite half of it being swearing and gay jokes.

Part of the reason it's so good is that it didn't sour its reputation by making episodes well past the sell-by date (Only Fools and Horses for one).

That sounds like people here who say Firefly is the greatest show ever. It's a great show, sure. But I don't saying it's the best ever when it barely lasted a season.

The American Version of Men Behaving Badly starred Rob Schneider and just didn't work at all.
The UK Law and Order series is a steaming pile of garbage.

They just couldn't get Coupling done right in the US. I laughed so hard watching the first season of the BBC version and thought for sure it would be gold in the states. Wrong wrong wrong

I'm just glad no one has tried to make a US adaptation of Blackadder.
...yet.
