I liked it. I didn't love it, but I liked it.
I thought all the performances were great.
The film is funny.
It's a good western.
I wasn't crazy though about the end. And I wasn't as impressed with the cinematography of Coen regular Roger Deacons.
I would recommend it though.

And I wasn't as impressed with the cinematography of Coen regular Roger Deacons. I would recommend it though. I loved it, my personal favorite of the year(note, didn't see Inception, The Social Network, The King's Speech, or Black Swan yet). The acting IS great. I am kinda pissed though, that despite Hailee Steinfeld getting 16 award nominations so far(she's won 6 of the 16 so far, some of them haven't been awarded yet), 12 of them are for her being a "supporting actress". THE f***?! She's the main character! She's the leading f***ing role! Man up and give her nominations for Best Actress! Not Best Supporting Actress. The film is definitely funnier than the first film, that's for sure, but as a whole it isn't that funny, as it has plenty of scenes that balance out the tone with a lot of grim and despair. It actually follows the book closer than the first film. It was a great freaking Western. It is a classic Western film, something that hasn't been made in a long, long time. Ever since Unforgiven, Western films have, I dunno, just felt differently to me. This felt like the Westerns pre-Unforgiven. The end was amazing to me, it was ripped straight from the novel. I have to disagree with you on the cinematography, though, as I thought it was some of Deacons' best work in a while. It helped set that grim tone in certain parts, plus it was just gorgeous to boot. Overall, I have to give it my highest recommendation of the year, but with a warning that the film is kinda slow, but funny, until Mattie, Rooster, and La Boeuf set out on their journey. Once they set out, the film really picks up. Oh, and you can't really compare this film to the original film, as the Coens were not remaking the original film, despite the popular misconception that they were, and believe me, that misconception is being hammered into the public's mind thanks to a lot of reviewers mistakenly calling it a remake of the '69 John Wayne vehicle, when in reality it is just a second adaptation of the novel, and follows the novel a LOT more than the first film, such as having the correct point of view, the first film gave us Rooster's pov, while the novel and this film give us Mattie's pov. Plus they added the beginning and ending from the book. Also, the locations used in this film follow the descriptions of the locations in the book better. Hell, aside from them not spending as much time focusing on Chaney's time spent with Mattie's family like the book does, the Coens almost did for True Grit what they did for No Country For Old Men, ie, copied everything from the book. So hopefully this means the Coens get another Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.....

It wasnt what I was expecting going in, and I was admittedly slightly underwhelmed due to the massive expectations i bring into Coen films now, but I still think it was quite good, and will probably end as one of my top 10 films of the year.

I know it's like your opinion man but dude the cinematography of the movie was amazing. I wish it was as good as the cinematography in Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. I really liked the way that film looked, and I think that's what I was hoping for.

I saw this the other night and really enjoyed it. I had watched the original just days prior and while they were both enjoyable I felt this film made the characters a lot more realistic and likeable. At the same time they actually give us a reason to dislike Matt Damon's texas ranger character unlike in the original where I felt he wasn't portrayed nearly as well and made the characters around him seem like bullies in there teasing. Probably the best movie I saw in 2010.

I saw it and really liked it. It's probably one of the best remakes I've ever seen. However, although I did like it, I'm still a big fan of the original so I felt this movie was unnecessary. I will say this about the movie:
Matt Damon>Glen Campbell New Maddie>>>>>>>>Old Maddie New Direction & Style>Original Direction & Style Jeff Bridges<John Wayne, but not by much
I'd love it if this leads to a Western revival and I wouldn't mind seeing a few remakes, but certain originals should NEVER be remade (i.e. High Noon, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and the Sergio Leone movies especially). Seriously if they ever remade The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, I'd be monumentally pissed off.

The horse shooting got me down to.
But I hope Hailee Steinfeld & Jeff Bridges get nominated at the Oscars for Best Actress & Best Actor respectively.

I, too, thought it was okay -- nothing amazing or anywhere near the best of the year. Kind of bland and slow, really, which I suppose is in the spirit of old Westerns, but it felt like they could be doing more with scenes where they were just f***ing around. The scenes with the dead Native American, if I remember the context of them correctly, were rather pointless. I loved the female lead, though, and Jeff Bridges is always reliably good.

Quite honestly i thought it was boring. I felt like the movie dragged on way to much and some of the lingo i really didn't get. I'm not a western fan, but when i saw the trailer i thought that it looked really good but left feeling disappointed. I thought the actors were good especially the girl, but the storyline seemed boring to me. Just my opinion.

If the current award nomination trends keep up, they both will get Oscar noms, but Hailee Steinfeld will be nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Unless the Academy is generous and this is one of the few times where an actress gets stuck with Support Actress nominations throughout the award season except for the Oscars where they get the Best Actress nominations they deserve.

What they did was more like when Peter Jackson made his LotR movies. He wasn't remaking any previous attempt at adapting the novels to film, he was just doing another adaptation. Same thing here.
