Yea his legs were fine, its just his spine was curved.
Basically, he had scoliosis.
Not necessarily, but there were similarities between the two conditions. My theory is that Forest did not have a degenerative condition but rather a disproportionate growth condition that he grew out of. The braces would have accommodated that disproportional growth until he was older. The braces likely prevented the base of his spine from curving too much and causing nerve damage that would have eventually paralyzed him from the waist down.
