Jim Ross is considered the Gordon Solie of this generation for his on-air talents and years in the business. Now which WWE commentators could be considered the "Jim Ross" of this generation?

Okay, how about commentators from other organizations if none from the WWE?

CM Punk does a really good job of putting over the people in the ring, although he likely won't have the longevity in the booth that JR had.

It's none of them. Most likely by design.

None of them. There isnt a truly great play-by-play in the WWE right now.
Striker, Cole and Punk are all fantastic color guys but they arent great play by plays.

Would art of play by play be phased out into semi-play by play with lots of color?

Striker for me. I think he has a good chance of being the main guy if given a chance. He's smart and so verbally nimble that all he needs to do is throw some emotion into it and we've got a truly great mic man. In no way Jim Ross, but I see him as having the shortest road to being in that stratosphere.

Striker is great, but not Jim Ross great.
On a related note, Josh Matthews is horribly underrated for his commentary.

Jim Ross was great at making you really really feel the moment...nobody can really make you feel like your watching the biggest moment ever anymore...i really really wish JR would have been there when shawn and bret shook hands and hugged and he would have made that moment much much bigger.
in terms of play by play...i Striker is pretty good at it and he knows his stuff...i think though that Striker is more like Joey Styles...he can call out moves and gets alot of respect for his knowledge, but dosent posess the storytelling aspect to put them up there with Jim Ross.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I really like the older guy that does the RAW portion of Superstars with King. His deep baritone and clear understanding of the product is everything Mike Adamle should've been, had he been competent at PBP. WHO IS HE?!?
I say move him up to the RAW team and keep Cole on the pre-recorded shows where he can let his heel flag fly, unfettered. WHO IS HE?!?

None. Nobody is even close, even though I don't think it would matter.
I think it was a combination of JR and the time period itself.
If JR were still around, yeah he would be good, but I wouldn't care because the matches aren't that good, the characters are bland, the stories suck and the build up is horrible.
When JR was at his best, Austin, Bret, HBK, Rock, Taker, Foley were all big time players and had great matches and stories behind them which were only enhanced by JR's commentary.
Whenever I watch Austin/Bret from Survivor Series 1996 I love the moment where Austin and Bret go eye to eye and JR says "If you like Tyson and Holyfield, you're gonna love this".
Just the way he said things and the big fight feel he gave it. It was just a perfect combo of JR and the WWE product at the time.
Taking nothing away from JR of course. He was always excellent and would probably still be just as good now.

He used to be a Sportscaster until being signed by WWE. He also does the Free For All show with Jack Korpela.

None. At least not at the moment. I was thinking tonight during the matches with Cole/Matthews... they were both so low-key. I could barely hear them; at times they seemed to be mumbling. At one point, I was beginning to get nervous that they had just heard some tragic news in the headset.
I know that back in tha day there was a lot of criticism towards JR, Schiavone, and Styles' superlative styles... but that's an adjective that's lacking from wrestling in general, these days.

None. Joey Styles was the closest, but then again he doesn't count since he had his own style, which is what made him stand out more. I think the worst thing a commentator can do is try to imitate another's style, which is one of the reasons Cole got so much crap over the years.
I also mark for heel Cole, which is why I get happy whenever Josh Matthews come out to the table. The duo make a good team and counter balance each other.
