Curious to pick this up. Does anyone have it? If so, do you recommend?

Depends on how anal you'll get over the obvious political slant. It's definitely not the most objective list.

Did I read right or wasn't Hogan somewhere in like the middle of the list? If that's so, that's sorta absurd.

Did they outline any criteria, why is Harley Race so high on the list?

See that's just silly and makes me glad I didn't give it a purchase. Hogan if not 1 is 2. Slot Austin in there above or below him and there's an argument either way; but beyond that..

The criteria was that the WWE wrestlers themselves determined the list. The rankings themselves don't really matter anyway, its just a list. Next year we'll get the Top 50 Matches DVD, and I expect the ****storm over that to be much worse.

I got the set. If you watch the list and you take it in as "these guys are in no particular order" it's a pretty good collection of names.
I only watched the main "list" disc so far, but there's a pretty decent collection of matches on the other two discs, including a Lou Thesz match and a couple Steamboat matches.
I couldn't help but notice that they spelled Bruno Sammartino's name wrong..."Summartino." They did a pretty fair job of representing different eras. I was pleased to see Nick Bockwinkel make it. I thought the Road Warriors should have made it as a team since they're about as iconic as Hogan with the facepaint and mohawks, but I guess they're saving them for a tag team list.

Yeah the "Sumartino" thing was caught before the set was even released. If WWE puts out a new version to correct it, then the first edition could become rare. It wouldn't be the first timem they've had to do it.

My wife bought me this or my birthday yesterday. So far I'm up to about #15 on the documentary part. It goes in reverse order so I've seen about 35 profiles so far, most of which are no more than 2 minutes long. As someone else said, this list is supposedly compiled by current superstars and takes into account charisma, skill, impact on the business, etc. Todd Grisham hosts and he makes point when Hogan's slot comes up of saying, "Hey, don't blame me, I didn't make this list. I told you'd there'd be controversy." So, there is at least SOME acknowledgment that Hogn's ranking is a joke. And also, they're very complimentary of the guys who work for TNA, including Hogan, Hardy, and Angle. There was no attempt at all in burying those guys.
So far I'm enjoying it and the bonus discs should definitely make it worth it. I was peeved when I opened it to find no insert, however. As usual the slot is there, but they cheapened things up by not including the match listings and such.

That match with Flair And Bret Hart, that was when Bret Hart won his first championship right? The match was always said not to be that good but it had good moments.

The set is very good and very self-aware. It mentions that the criteria for the list was chosen by the superstars and not anybody else. While this might be true, I'm not so sure.
Regardless, Grisham does in fact mention the fact that it's not a true measuring stick to the placement of some of these stars and even mentions that Hogan being so low is just as shocking as we think it is.
That being said, ignore the placement and view the stars as just being a grab bag of the top 50 in no particular order and nothing about the list is really in question.
The set in no means says that this ordering is the be all, end all of the entire wrestling world. The topic is always going to be up for debate in terms of what it truly means to be a top superstar. Adding more discussion about the placement only gets the word out more about it, so perhaps this went into the placement of the list as well.

If you look at it from a smarkish point of view as "Oh, this list is so wrong and _____ should be higher and _____ should be lower and ________ shouldn't even be on the list" then your not going to enjoy it.
I wouldn't buy it, just rent it or get it on Netflix.

In my opinion...
Obvious omissions: Sting Ultimate Warrior British Bulldog Owen Hart
Overrated: Rey Mysterio Eddie Guerrero Batista
Underrated: Hulk Hogan Rick Flair Dusty Rhodes

What's the selection pool for the choices on this anyway? Do they explicitly eliminate non-"american" performers from the list, or just leave it implicit?

Bret Hart, Pat Patterson, Edge, and Eddie Guerrero. just to name a few. Inoki did speak on the DVD if that's any consolation.

Worth having, but for the true fan only. They glazed over HUGE parts of his career. Like 93-until today. They talked about his time in WCW for all of 45 seconds. Maybe less than that.
I also got the feeling they weren't exactly sure he'd be alive when the DVD came out, if you didn't know better you'd get the feeling had had passed watching the doc.
One weird note, all the old block WWF signs were blocked out, you know the legal ones, but not on turnbuckles. Banners and signs in crowds were blurred. Weird.

I was using "American" performers as a (sloppy) shorthand for wrestlers in the american wrestling scene. I've seen the list, which doesn't include some extremely important performers from mexican, european, and japanese wrestling history (Rikidozan, El Santo, and Big Daddy, just to name the first few that come to mind). I was asking if the set acknowledged that it was limited to the U.S. wrestling scene, or if it just outright ignored the issue.
