I truly think, at this point, it's damn near impossible to go heel with him. We were all waiting during the forced Nexus joining and it didn't happen. I know it has been years at this point, but he USED to be a heel in the beginning.
Who else do we know that was a heel very early on, faced and became the go to guy for the company? Then heeled it up toward the end of the career?

Do it like Hogan when he joined the nWo. Have him mention that he came in as a trash-talking rapper, had a lot of fun doing so, and saw that the fans took to it. So he cleaned up his act and tried to be a role model, which got the fans to turn on him. Basically, he'll say he's sick of doing things for the fans and their kids, and he's only doing anything for himself now. If "Cena Sucks" chants start up, have him acknowledge that, and say he's been hearing it for nearly 6 years now, and the fans never truly accepted him. He could bring up how the Internet still lights up with hatred for him, and calls for anyone else to be champion. While not even split 50/50 anymore, there are still a loud minority of haters in the audience, so he'll go on that.

He takes time off to heal from a bad injury (hopefully kayfabe) and makes a surprise return late in the Royal Rumble. So far, he's still a babyface and does his normal schtick with Five Knuckle Shuffles and AA's and whatnot. He's in the ring, outnumbered by a few heels, but overcomes the odds and manages to eliminate them all. Then #30, a huge babyface like Bryan, arrives. The fight goes back and forth. Cena gets him in position for a Five Knuckle Shuffle. At the last second, Bryan (or whomever it is) evades it and Cena's fist punches the mat hard, injuring his hand. Bryan then gets the upper hand, nearly eliminating Cena, but again, Cena overcomes the odds and throws Bryan out of the ring, becoming the Royal Rumble winner. Bryan (outside the ring) and Cena (inside the ring) have a little stare-down. Cena extends his uninjured hand and Bryan enters the ring, accepting the handshake. Then out of nowhere, Cena headbutts Bryan and throws him out of the ring. Then he continues the beatdown with chairs and throwing him against the ringpost. Cena finishes it up by giving Bryan a sick AA onto the steel steps. Hopefully, the crowd will be booing. Next day on Raw, "Why Cena? Why?" signs everywhere. He comes out with his hand in a cast. He cuts a heel promo explaining how The WWE Universe only ever saw him as a stunt man, never caring for his health or something along those lines. He says that he wanted more time off to heal up, but everyday his fan-mail consisted of "Come back soon!" and "Raw is so boring without you!" He states that he is done pandering to the WWE Universe and that from here on out, he is only looking out for himself and nobody else and that he will not participate in his scheduled match against Bryan tonight due to his injury. The Raw GM gives an announcement, stating that Cena will have to wrestle or else he loses his title shot at Wrestlemania. Cena does wrestle the match, but often calls time out to complain about his hand. The match ends with Cena pushing Bryan into the ref, who hit the turnbuckle hard. While the ref is hurt, Cena bashes Bryan in the head with his cast and scores the pinfall. Cena does heel stuff every week and hopefully the crowd goes along with it. Then comes Wrestlemania. Cena vs The World Heavyweight Champion, The Undertaker. {Spoiler}Cena wins I just kind of came up with this on the fly. I think it sounds good.

I honestly think that any potential attempt to turn Cena heel would just bomb out. He really is like superman at this point, he's the moral center of his world and any attempt to turn him would just be ridiculous.

Seriously, you can't.
Make him attack a face dastardly? People would speculate that it's a heel turn for that face. In any case, they would go with "Cena knows why he did it." Make him save Vickie from a tombstone? People would think it's the start of Vickie's face turn.
Last RAW C.M. Punk basically pointed out that going down hard on the Nexus Cena became what he wanted to destroy. He attacked people, he repeatedly went into overkill, he attempted to AA Vickie. A couple Cena quips later, Cena is the white knight and C.M. Punk is the heel.
Fans do not want to see Cena turning heel. It was enough to draft him into Nexus to experience such a decline in merchandising that they just had to cut short his stay.
Right now, anything short of Cena actually going out and spelling out to them that "YES I AM GOING TO BE A VILLAIN" would not work, and he probably would have to AA some wheelchair-bound kid to concrete to even make them realize he isn't joking.
WWE had gold in their hands in the Nexus plot, but they were just protecting him (and sales) too much to actually go somewhere. The closest thing to actually MAKE him do something villainous (and even that under pressure) was when Barrett ordered him to give an AA to Orton, and Cena actually picked him up... only to have Barrett saying "Actually, you're just trying to steal my spotlight." What spotlight? He literally ordered him to do it. If that's not a clear sign that WWE won't even toy with a heel turn, nothing is.

I would just start it out where it is now. Continue the Punk/Cena fued where Punk continues to test Cena and Cena fails by "doing the wrong thing." At Wrestlemania Punk does the honorable thing and tells Nexus he wants this fight to be one on one. Punk loses the match, but it is hard fought and he looks good. However this is not good enough and Cena decides to give Punk a post match beat down that leads him to being taken out in a stretcher. The kiddies still cheer, but the adults are in full hate mode once again.
The next night on Raw Cena is bragging about the beatdown backstage and bragging to all of the other faces backstage with most of them disapproving, even though they didn't like Punk/Nexus he went too far.
Cena decides to throw a Nexus going away party, of course telling corny jokes about them and he even busts out a bottle of champagne to celebrate. Cole is absolutely exploding in his pants, while King(if he is still there) and Josh Matthews aren't so sure what to think. At the end Cena decides it is time to move to bigger and better things mainly being the WWE title. The GM sends a message that says Cena is now the #1 contender due to his win at WM and will get a title shot at the next ppv. But tonight, since earlier the Miz decided have his title rematch later in the show, Cena will be the special referee.
Cena calls the match down the middle, however after Orton hits an RKO and covers the Miz, Cena doesn't count the pinfall. Orton gets in Cena's face, Orton shoves Cena and Cena shoves back. Right after Cena shoves back, the Miz rolls up Orton and Cena makes a quick three count awarding the Miz the belt.
On the next Raw Cena comes out to explain himself to a mixed reaction. All he says is he shouldn't have to explain himself it's obvious why he choose to give the Miz the win and title. Because of Cena's actions the GM changes the match to a triple threat, the Miz/Orton/Cena.
At the ppv a quick change to the main event is made right before the match, making Michael Cole the special referee, much to the crowds approval. For the most part, the Miz is staying out of the way, letting Orton and Cena beat the crap out of each other. At one point the Miz is on the ring apron and Orton whips Cena into him knocking him off. As soon as Cena comes off the ropes Orton hits the RKO, but instead of making the count Cole goes outside of the ring to see if the Miz is okay. Orton is infuriated and is yelling at Cole to get back in the ring and do his job. While Orton's back is turned Cena grabs a chair and hits Orton without Cole seeing what happened. Cole then decides to look back and sees Cena hit Orton with the AA, so he gets in the ring to make the pin count and Cena wins the belt.
On Raw Michael Cole introduces the new WWE champ, and conducts an interview with him. Cena thanks Cole for being such a great referee and states from this day forward only Michael Cole is worthy of interviewing him. He also states the Miz was one of the greatest champs he has ever seen and deserves a round of applause. The Miz comes out and looks like he is about to attack Cena, but instead they hug, and what the heck, Michael Cole joins in.
At this point, much like Batista's heel turn, I would wait a couple of weeks before a full blown turn on the fans. Heck, joining the Miz and Cole might be enough that I doubt he even has to turn on the fans. I would actually keep him similar to what is, just turn up the annoying a couple of notches, cheat to win, and allign with heels, fight the faces.

Ya know, people said a Hogan heel turn was impossible too.
We all know how that went.
Even Austin's heel turn I believe was pretty good and worked.
They worked because of the people around them as well.
Hogan turned on the entire company and stabbed Sting and Savage (the 2 biggest faces in the company) in the back. He then delivered a legendary promo to cement it.
Austin aligned himself with McMahon and HHH (the 2 bigges heels in the company) and destroyed every face in his path. Bloodied up the Rock and beat the s*** out of the Hardyz AND Lita (the most popular tag team and woman in the company).
In order for it to work though, Cena must align himself with a MAJOR heel or turn on a MAJOR face.
Until the WWE gets some people that are near his level, it won't work.
But it can be done...in time.

I wouldn't.
I know the idea is possible, yeah. If Hogan could do it, Cena could. I just think it's a dumb idea from the outset, especially if Nexus would suddenly become the faces somehow.

The WWE needs to start pushing the younger talent in order to take Cena's place as the top face of the company.
Honestly they had the perfect opportunity to turn him heel when the fans first started turning on him. His feuds with RVD, Sabu, and Hunter were the perfect chances to turn him heel as he rubbed it in their faces and the fans ate it up.

How about he targets HBK during Shawn's HoF ceremony? HBK comes out during Wrestlemania (or on the Raw after) to deliver one final thank you speech to the fans. Another on of his big tear-jerking moments and BAM! John Cena brutally attacks him. It has to be brutal too. John Cena then goes on a rant about how he's tired of living in the shadow of guys like the HBK and The Undertaker (setting up a feud with Taker here) as the greatest in WWE history. He's tired of not getting respected by the entire WWE Universe, and he goes out of his way to start insulting the fans who buy his stuff. This absolutely would work.

Make him have an affair with Vickie Guerrero.
He'll deny it and defend himself weeks on end, until somebody like Triple H or another top babyface catches him.
Dolph finds out and confronts both Vickie and Cena. Vickie denies it outright and so does Cena.
Until... BLAMMO! A Clothesline out of nowhere, Cena brutally attacks Dolph and Puts him in the STF.
Afterwards, Cena and Vickie make out right next to Dolph.
Hence turning Dolph into a fan favourite trying to get revenge.
If there's anything that everyone hates, it's a cheater of the relationship kind.
I think it's a good idea.

Have a plant in Cena gear in the front row. Cena goes to hug him, but pulls him over and stomps the crap out of him.

Tap out, beat the Undertaker at WM and turn on the fans for booing him no matter how much he gave for their entertainment.
I think him tapping out should start the heel turn as I think it would have to be done gradually, once he loses the "never give up" aspect of his character he can begin the downwards spiral. From there he'd have to do something to go against hustle, loyalty and respect.

He's already heel. Only for half the audience anyways, they don't need to "turn" him.

Come out, and say on the mic in his serious voice, "You know what I hate?" He then proceeds to list off every single ethnic slur, including the ones for white people.
