I just bought a nice little four-pack of DVDs from Wal-Mart for five dollars. It was Funhouse, Phantasm II, The Serpent and The Rainbow, and Sssssss. The last one I'm not particularly thrilled about, but I'm a big fan of Phantasm II, and Funhouse was watchable, and I've also been curious about Serpent & the Rainbow. So I took the bait. I also bought the Macho Man DVD, but that's a DVD for a different thread. Now see that's a helluva deal. If you don't want to import Phantasm II or pay money for a bare bones U.S. Phantasm II dvd release.

{Spoiler}I too thought of the Batista-Grudge basketball gag. Good times. ;D It's admittedly been a while since I've watched the Ghost films, but Black Ghost is definitely the better of the two. It's got a VERY different vibe from every other movie in the series, Japanese or American. The idea of the spirit of an unborn baby holding a grudge is some very badass stuff, and I LOVE those bits with the sister holed inside her home chanting incantations against the grudge. As for White Ghost, my favorite aspect of it is that it's the only movie in the entire series with an upbeat ending. Truly a shocker coming from Ju-On. f***, it's just refreshing that somebody else besides me has SEEN these movies! ;D Yeah, White Ghost seems like it tries WAY too hard to fit American style "GOTCHA!" moments into a traditionally Asian, "slow paced creepfest" franchise. Black Ghost on the other hand....THAT is an awesome film, and one that, as you said, defies anything that's come before it in the series. It keeps you off balance and off-kilter enough that you NEVER really see that reveal coming, and the titular ghost....well, mileage may vary, but to THIS horror fan, she looked even creepier than Kayako, though no one can hold a candle to the late Mrs. Sayeki in the "pure embodiment of evil" category. Kayako stands as an entity unrivaled in modern horror as far as "kill efficiency" goes, and as far as her gender goes. Not many female monsters/villains are as long-lived or as lethal, not to mention as terrifying as Kayako consistently is. Speaking of femme fatales....what's this I hear about ELVIRA making a comeback? Anyone have any news on that? Like DSR, I too have caught some brand-new Elvira specials. Comes on every Saturday at 10:00 p.m. in my neck of the woods (on My Network, of all places), and they show such masterpieces as Werewolf in Washington D.C.. Good times. Reading those Kayako musings, something just came to mind...I wonder if there's enough fanboys out there in this great, grand world of ours to get a Ju-On: The Grudge Never Dies DVD (or preferably something with a much less-lame sounding title ;D)? You know, something in the vein of the NOES: Never Sleep Again disc, or His Name Was Jason. As far as I know, it would be almost completely stuff that we HAVEN'T heard, or even knew, before, since a lot of the extras on the Japanese films have much to be desired. I'd like to hear Shimizu give his ruminations and thought processes on each film, along with a whole bunch o' cast interviews, including Miss Awesome herself Takako Fuji. For the record, she's STILL the only female in the WC Horror Hall of Fame, although that stands a good chance at changing soon. Oh yeah, spoiler alert. Seriously, though, I'd buy this DVD post-haste. Think there's enough fan demand for it?

Just ordered the following: - Martyrs (Blu-ray) - Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy - The Psycho Legacy - The Slumber Party Massacre Collection I already own Martyrs on DVD, but I'm trying to upgrade as much of my collection as possible to HD. Although I will probably keep the DVD for the extras, seeing as the Blu-ray is barebones. I've heard a lot of great things about The Elm Street Legacy and how it blows "His Name Was Jason" out of the water. Unlike others, I actually enjoyed HNWJ, so I'm expecting big things from this NOES documentary. The Psycho documentary (released by Shout! Factory), I don't know much about, but I took a chance on it because the original is my favorite horror film of all-time. Has anyone seen this? And of course, the Slumber Party Massacre Collection (also from Shout) is a trilogy of films that, as a slasher aficionado, is long overdue for inclusion in my collection. I'm also given to understand that Shout includes a documentary on the series as an extra, which I'm almost certain would not have happened had a larger scale company released it. Sounds pretty neat. Oh, I also got WrestleMania 27 on Blu as well. Thought I'd throw that in, what with this being a wrestling site as well

Yeah, "Never Sleep Again" is absolutely friggin' outstanding. Probably up there as one of the best documentaries EVER. Don't let the 4-hour run time scare you off, it goes by like clockwork.

Oh I agree its a great documentary and while it is painfully long, with that many films and how detailed they have to be about each, I completely understand

At any rate, awesome haul! My local Big Lots store had a handful of Midnite Movies double features on the cheap, so I picked up: WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH HELEN?/WHOEVER SLEW AUNTIE ROO?A pair of horror/comedies (I think?) starring Shelley Winters (an Oscar winning actress, whose filmography includes THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, and THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE) STRANGE INVADERS/INVADERS FROM MARSTwo 80s movies that are basically love letters to the sci-fi/horror pictures of the 50s (one of which was directed by Tobe Hooper) MORONS FROM OUTER SPACE/ALIEN FROM LATwo sci-fi/adventure/comedies, ALIEN FROM LA was mocked to oblivion on MST3K (especially blasted was Kathy Ireland's "DULL SURPRISE" acting)

The only tolerable scene is the final one with her in a bikini. Which had a profund effect on a young Shemp might I add. Great haul as well!

Watched Castle Freak the other night. Fine as a time-waster, but very blah in spots. A good portion of the film felt like filler to showcase the mansion. There's some effort with the subplots (Combs as an alcoholic, deadbeat father and his blind daughter), but they're not used much. Just as filler until the next scene with the Castle Freak.
I'd give it a C-.

Why did I read "It's Hammer Time!" and automatically think of a slasher flick starring MC Hammer?

An MC Hammer slasher would be a great double feature with my Vanilla Ice slasher flick, Stop! collaborate and...MURDER! I've seen "Cool as Ice" and think that counts as a horror film. The fact it got made and was considered a good idea by a studio frightens the hell out of me.

Those are awesome. I'm especially glad they included Ingrid Pitt, as COUNTESS DRACULA is one of the more obscure Hammer flicks.

Think there's enough fan demand for it? I think there really is only one way to find out for sure, and that's to start (or host on your site) a petition to get one of these docs made for JU ON. I mean, the series has more than run long enough, and is enough of a cultural and iconic touchstone in our society to deserve one. I for one will be severely disappointed if SAW gets a retrospective before THE GRUDGE or even THE RING, two films which arguably sparked the "J-Horror" invasion, and made Hollywood MILLIONS. As for recent horror films I've seen....just watched Death on Demand on Netflix. This one is so damn bad it doesn't warrant a full review, or even a full two paragraphs. Remember the installment of the Halloween franchise where they had a reality show inside the Meyers house? This movie steals that plot verbatim, only swapping out Michael Myers for a mental mountain-climber who murdered his whole family with various climbing tools. Adding to the film's woes are the fact that this vengeful spectre looks (and acts) like a meth-head Jim Carrey doing an "In Living Color" skit mocking horror films, and the fact that the guy doing the webcast comes off as an unholy clone/hybrid of Eric Bischoff and Joe Francis. Death on Demand is dead on arrival, with a horrible cast, horrid, cheap audio, and camera work that looks like it was done for $1.45. NO STARS. I can accept low budget horror....I really can. But what happened to the days of actually TRYING to make the most you could out of your budget? Did people forget how to make a GOOD cheap horror film between 1974 and now? Or is it sheer laziness? Reading DSR's excellent reviews, and even watching those "golden oldies" myself....it becomes apparent that between those generations and ours, something did indeed change. Maybe it's the ready availability of film-making tools and implements, which lets just about anyone make (and distribute) their own films both in stores and online. But I would think that you'd at least have pride enough in yourself to STOP and question "Is this really the BEST we can do with our budget?"

The 80s and the VHS boom certainly lowered the bar. Video stores were just looking for product, and a large number of companies sprang up to fill the demand (and then some). They made a fair amount of scratch, and they put out a lot of stuff, but the quality was clearly close to nil.
