I thought the feud made absolutely no sense. The United States and Japan weren't at war or anything so was I, as an American kid from a military family, supposed to hate Yokozuna for being from Japan? Japanese people are awesome! Why would I hate the guy just for the country he's from?
And Luger was a much better worker than people made him out to be so I thought it sucked that he was saddled with a lame Patriotic gimmick instead of just being a Total Package type guy. Hell, even Bret Hart couldn't get a good match out of Yoko on two tries!

I said he was better than people made him out to be. Luger has had some good matches with Steamboat, Pillman, Flair, Windham and his match with Yokozuna was probably Yokos best. Luger wasn't a good worker, but it's not like he was Hercules Hernandez or the Warlord. He's done some good stuff.

I never cared for it. My (American) girlfriend HATES it and found it horribly patronising and jingoistic and can never sit through it when it comes on one of the DVDs we're watching. It's strange as I usually hated the patriotic/jingoistic stuff but I enjoyed seeing this, although a large part of that was due to the unique setting.

How long was the event? I can't imagine watching 30 people try to just slam one guy all that interesting.

Ahh yes.. the day Luger slammed Yoko on the deck of the Intrepid. It's one of those colorful 90s WWF moments that sometimes makes it's way into a wrestling conversation or two.
I remember just catching the brodcast of it in the evening while at my Grandmother's house. Still basic cable then, an no television guide, to find it. Just luck.
When Lex Luger body slammed him on the deck, I actually did feel quite good. WWF always did have those times when they could catch your emotions when everything was set up right.

Why would I hate the guy just for the country he's from? Didn't you play Wrestlemania the arcade game? It's because by being WWF Champion Yokozuna caused the United States Economy to hit the worst recession in history

my dad took me to the Intrepid at some point before we moved from NY to FL and it wasn't very interesting for a 7 or 8 year old kid. so hearing they were doing something there, my response was "So? It's lame" or something to that effect

I remember sometime shortly after Luger slammed him, they had him on Good Morning America or one of those shows.
I remember my grandma calling to tell me he was on, and so I turned it on and was in awe of a wrestler getting a little mainstream pub.

This was also the same time we had a Finn who hated America because of pollution, a bunch of mounties who say they are not mounties, and a ninja from Puerto Rico. THAT, is saying something of that era.

THAT, is saying something of that era. That's what is strange about it. Here's a guy from Finland who just hates pollution. That sounds like a face to me. Also, Yokozuna just came in a steamrolled everybody. How does that make him evil? Because he has an elderly Japanese man waving a Japanese flag? So lame. The whole Yokozuna experiment failed. He was decent for a big guy, but his weight was just ridiculous and his matches all took place in slow motion. Watching Yoko was like watching a Big Daddy match. All he could do was a leg drop and a banzai. I dreaded watching him as a kid. Not because he was such an evil heel, but because I knew the match would suck and I'd have to watch him work a f***ing nerve pinch for five minutes.

Crush should've been the man to slam him, and nearly did. It took legit strength. Luger's "slam" was awful.

Would have been REALLY weird if 1.Doink slammed him. "Clown vs Sumo at Summerslam- anything can happen in the WWF"

He also did Belly to belly suplexes and samoan drops and Avalanches. He actually wore padding initially. As for Ludvig Borga he hated pollution, but he also hated America because it was polluted. WCW could have signed him and turned him face and had him appear with Captain Planet.

Actually I just found this: The following wrestlers all failed to bodyslam Yokozuna: Rick and Scott Steiner, Tatanka, Bob Backlund, Randy Savage, and Crush....The following pro athletes all failed to bodyslam Yokozuna: Joe Morris and Peter Taglianetti (Pittsburgh Penguins), Scott Burrell (Charlotte Hornets), Bill Fralic (Detroit Lions), Regy Roby (Miami Dolphins), George Martin, Joe Smith, and several others including a jockey Joe Morris. Yoko could have eaten Joe Morris. Hell, Hornswoggle is almost as big as Joe Morris.
