In wrestling, its cliche that when a wrestler (kayfabe) retires due to a stipulation made or such, they come back at a later time, be it weeks, months, or sometimes years. However, what were times when said wrestler stuck to his/her guns in storyline or better yet real life? Marc Mero - The Marvelous One said that if he lost to Duane Gill, he would quit the WWF. He lost, so he had to retire. Though he did have a match at Capital Carnage(a UK PPV), the storyline was he made a prior committment. Its been over 12 years and he still hasn't appeared on WWF/E programming since. I think its safe to say he ain't coming back. Rob Conway - The Con Man made his New Years Resolution to win the IC belt from Jeff Hardy or leave the company. He didn't win the title, and just to ensure he stuck with his guns, McMahon fired him. He left the WWE for real months later when they wouldn't renew his contract. Those are pretty much the only names I can think of in the truest sense, other names have made one off appearances in-ring(Trish Stratus) or found a job doing non-wrestling things like commentating(JBL, though he did on-air and legit quit the second time around) or was active on TV in some other way. Marc Mero and Rob Conway never had any association with the WWF/E in kayfabe or for real since they made their announcements. Any names you can think of? Rob Conway still wrestles in the indies from time to time. Most of the time, he re-teams with Sylvain Grenier.

Not retirements but after purchasing WCW, Vince said he would never hire Jeff Jarrett and Lex Luger. what an idiot vince is. so he thinks re hiring sable 5 times drew more business than hiring luger or jarrett hmm? way to be close minded and limit yourself, vince

He's a decent shot at the HOF if they go with the WCW theme. Jarrett...is there really money to be made there? I mean I'm a massive Jarrett fan, but he never main evented in WWE. His main value would be the TNA library in the future.

Sable was rehired once, and I don't think it went too badly. Plus, at one point in time she was more over then pretty much anyone so why not give her a second shot? 2. By 2001 Luger's value as a wrestler was pretty much gone, and it's probably for the best that he wasn't working for Vince during the whole Elizabeth fiasco and subsequent health issues 3. Jeff Jarrett pretty much immediately went into working on TNA, so I doubt he was even available if Vince wanted him. So really, I don't think we're talking about millions of dollars being left on the table sir.

The gimmick battle royal at WM17 doesn't count? Gorilla died about 18 months before that. Jesse Ventura maybe? I know he had a few matches after he was diagnosed with the blood clots in his lungs but were they his last matches? Did he announce his retirement before those matches or after? Or did he ever announce it at all? Does his guest host appearance count as a return? How could anyone forget the greatness of he and McMahon returning to the commentary desk and showing those ham-and-eggers (to borrow a Heenanism) how to do it?

Sable, who up to that point had been the highest-selling issue of Playboy in history ... bad business move? Methinks not, sir.

Still, Sable's rehiring was fairly surprising. I think Vince would use Luger again if his health permitted, but I think there was also some bad blood for a time due to the circumstances of Miss Elizabeth's death.

none of them have stuck. I remember Hackenschmidt doing thumbtack matches in Bingo halls in the 1930s just to pay his rent.

Jesse Ventura retired from the ring in '84 due to the blood clots but returned to the ring for 1 match on SNME that was broadcast in '86. Jesse, Piper, & Orton beat The Hillbillies in a 6-man tag.

Jesse was semi-regular all through 85 and into 86. his last match on record was against Tito Santana in March of 1986. to the best of my knowledge, he has stuck to his retirement since then though.
