It all goes back a fateful night way back on June 1, 2010.
David Otunga, incensed by his elimination and bitter at Barrett's status as victor, swore vengeance. He made a deal with Kane, who helped the young rookie to temporarily steal the powers of the vegetated Undertaker. (Otunga convinced Nexus to help pay Kane back by helping him win at Buried Alive months later).
Using Taker's supernatural powers, Otunga would place a curse on all NXT winners that from that point forward they would never achieve success in WWE.

I will be forever pissed at the fact that Derrick Bateman was outright robbed on NXT 4.
Seriously, no excuse for that.

I mainly think it was because of the whole fan voting thing.
If they continued NXT like how it was in season 1, people we vote for would never have won.

I always figured the Defense Against the Dark Arts NXT winners' position was cursed.

After Season 1, they decided that we don't know what we want to watch and proceeded to push whoever the f*** they wanted, regardless of if they won the damn thing or not.

I have it on good authority that Otunga came out the womb feet-first and somehow gave the epidural giver a broken collarbone.

it's because season 1 the "pros" decided the winner and after that was fan voting. WWE kept it legit with the fan voting winning but exercised their right to not give half a f*** about them after they won. Alex Riley/McGillicutty "won" season 2 and Brodus "won" season 4. season 3 never existed as 3 is an evil number.

They only cared about the first one, used up most of their best guys, and didn't realize they had to keep doing it. Basically. They REALLY blew their load on the first go-round, and didn't have the depth of talent in subsequent seasons, or the commitment to make it work.

It just doesn't make sense why they let Kaval, Kaitlyn and Curtis win if they didn't want them to. The fan voting made up 50% and the "pro voting" made up the other 50%, so why didn't they just over-ride the fan vote with the pro vote? No-one would know, and it would have made more sense than let the ones they didn't want to win, win.

I think it was more that season 1 mattered in terms of showcasing a new star. The other seasons were just about showing 8 people they're considering, but not certain on.
