I remember the game being announced, but I've never seen those screenshots before. I always assumed the game would have been terrible, but knowing that it was essentially Backstage Assault 2 pretty much confirms it.

WCW videogames went the way of the actual product it represented: CRAP. Not sure if it was the decision from THQ or WCW to end their agreement, but THQ sure lucked out by ended up with the WWE license. Just look at how long that relationship has lasted for them.

Um, World Tour and Revenge were crap? I read somewhere that EA was supposed to do this game, and were going to work with AKI to do this game but then WCW went out of business and was bought and the plan was scrapped, but the plans to make a new AKI wrestling game was going to be made. I think that was when EA and AKI were doing Def Jam Vendetta.

Maybe you misread what I wrote, but WCW games were garbage after their agreement with THQ expired, so after World Tour and Revenge, WCW games (that were created by EA) were garbage.

I don't remember why exactly, but that project eventually got scrapped and THQ opted to go in a different direction with a new developer (the resulting project being Wrestlemania X8). Anyway, the magazine scans in the OP identify the developer as EA Canada.

Yes, I did misread what you wrote. I have only played Mayhem once or twice on the N64 and even I didn't think the game was that great. My mistake on misreading your post. However, Thunder and Nitro both sucked and they were from THQ. I don't think so. At the time this was first announced, AKI and THQ had already started working on a third WWF game. Anyway, the magazine scans in the OP identify the developer as EA Canada. Now that you mention it, there was supposed to be WWF Backlash, which I am sure that was supposed to be the first WWF game for the Gamecube, because the Gamecube first came on the scene in late 2001 I believe. Of course, I guess the EA deal was put on hiatus for the whole wrestling game thing until 2002 when AKI and EA worked together for Def Jam Vendetta, which was released in Spring of 2003.

Yea, WWF Backlash was the name of that 3rd game that AKI was going to develop. Apparently there's a couple of articles out there and I've heard there was a screenshot of somebody fighting on top of the HIAC structure. Would have been an amazing game.

Wow, great find.
I love how, at the time of the article, the game is just Goldberg wandering through an empty arena by himself, looking morose.

I would think, then, that the indirect sequel to No Mercy would be Day of Reckoning.

Speaking of WWF Backlash, I tried looking it up but couldn't find any previews or the screenshot of the "Cell" match. So do they even exist?

I'm actually thinking it was supposed to be for the N64 and not the Gamecube, but who knows?

Speaking of WWF Backlash, I tried looking it up but couldn't find any previews or the screenshot of the "Cell" match. So do they even exist? I've never seen screenshots from the game but I've heard that they were printed in some gaming magazines. I'm about 99% certain that it wouldn't be in Nintendo Power though, because I subscribed to that during that time period. TBH I'm not sure that the screenshots actually exist but I've seen a few people say that they have seen them so idk. I would love to see them myself. EDIT: Wikipedia page for the game without a whole lot of info. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WWF_Backlash_(video_game)According to that it was going to be for the N64 but was cancelled due to Nintendo not supporting the console anymore. It was supposedly 20% done when it was cancelled. DOUBLE EDIT: www.gamefaqs.com/boards/914112-wwf-no-mercy/48824645A guy in that thread said that he saw the HIAC pictures in a Gamepro magazine that ran an article about the game being cancelled.

I found another thread on a different site where somebody said they saw a preview article in a game informer magazine also that said not only would there be HIAC, but full tables that could be pulled from the audience as well as a revamped ladder match.

It says the game was coming out Q4 2000. Wasn't that basically when Backstage Assault was released?
I think they intended to do a PS2 version, but scrapped it. After the PS1 version was such a failure, I'm guessing they would've canned it and made something better (had WCW not died soon after).
WCW Mayhem wasn't really all that horrible, the engine was similar to that of the Aki games, only alot clunkier. And the CAW mode left alot to be desired.
If EA would've built on it instead of going all gimmicky, the next game could've been good.

Sounds like it could've been a lot of fun. I wonder what other new features would been added, if any at all. But yeah, the article and images are really hard to find.

Here's another interesting one. Before THQ signed with WWF and left WCW, they were going to use the Toukon Retsuden 3 engine for a game called WCW/nWo Live. An article I read at the time talked about the small WCW roster which was because Toukon Retsuden 3 had a handful of WCW talent (Steiners, Benoit, Scott Norton). Obviously that would have changed by the time the game was released. According to this article, it sounds like it was dropped in favor of WCW/nWo Thunder. psx.ign.com/articles/123/123910p1.html
