Here's another interesting one. Before THQ signed with WWF and left WCW, they were going to use the Toukon Retsuden 3 engine for a game called WCW/nWo Live. An article I read at the time talked about the small WCW roster which was because Toukon Retsuden 3 had a handful of WCW talent (Steiners, Benoit, Scott Norton). Obviously that would have changed by the time the game was released. According to this article, it sounds like it was dropped in favor of WCW/nWo Thunder. psx.ign.com/articles/123/123910p1.html Yeah, WCW Thunder sucked.

I think the more important issue regarding the PSM issue is the following...
WHO DID THEY FIND OUT WOULD PLAY LARA CROFT IN THE MOVIE?!?! I NEED ANSWERS, PEOPLE! ANSWERS!

If this game was going to be released in 2000, how did the WWF's purchase of WCW cause it to be canceled?

If this game was going to be released in 2000, how did the WWF's purchase of WCW cause it to be canceled? I'm pretty sure it was basically just going to be a PS2 version of WCW Backstage Assault (which was out in Fall of 2000), but when the other versions bombed they just decided against releasing it. Or it was delayed and WCW was bought out before it's release.

Those articles bring back a lot of memories. Never bothered playing the WCW Nitro or Thunder games as they looked like utter crap. I stayed loyal to the AKI developed titles which played the best at that time (and still hold up today in my opinion).
I remember reading about the depth of the VPW games, featuring editing options that we did not see with the US versions of the game. Unfortunately, I never got into the importing/modding scene as it was way too expensive for a teenager back then. It wasn't until I got into emulation when I finally got the chance to play imported games.

If this game was going to be released in 2000, how did the WWF's purchase of WCW cause it to be canceled? Because the PS2 came out in the US in October 2000 (I think) and WCW ran it's last show in March 2001. I doubt the game was meant to be a launch title. It looks like it didn't even get far enough along to get delayed though, which is interesting. I mean, basically all that was in those screenshots was Goldberg wandering aimlessly through an empty arena lol.

Just wondering, but what's with the screenshots of Goldberg walking around the streets? Was that supposed to be another venue? Wrestling in the streets? Not criticizing, because it kind of worked in HCTP when you fought in Times Square, but it does seem sort of random. Backstage venues and such are one thing, but the streets? At least with Times Square, that was just an unlockable venue and for fun, especially going up the helicopter rope ladder.

Which, I don't know why they would try that again when the 1st one bombed.

This is a May 2000 issue, WCW Backstage Assault came out in Dec 2000, that means this would have been a PS2 Backstage Assault like a version 1.5. And EA probably saw the writing on the wall before they finished this version and said screw it.

I have this issue in my closet somewhere. Back then the whole "backstage brawl" sort of thing was really popular. I imagine it has to do with the Hardcore title being defended backstage in the WWF and whatnot. I don't think anyone wanted to see a backstage-only game, though. I remember reading that it wouldn't have a ring and wondering just what the hell they were thinking.
