Well, I'm about a day later than I said I'd be with this, but here is...
INVADERS FROM MARS (1986) - As I mentioned in a previous post, directed by Tobe Hooper, written by Dan O'Bannon and Don Jakoby, produced by Golan-Globus, with creatures designed by Stan Winston. And *gasp* it's a remake!
Following a somewhat SUPERMAN-esque opening title sequence, we are introduced to David Gardner (Hunter Carson) a 10-ish year old boy who dreams of becoming an astronaut when he grows up. These dreams are encouraged by his parents, George (Timothy Bottoms, who played George W. Bush on the sitcom "That's My Bush") and Ellen (Laraine Newman, of "Saturday Night Live" fame).
David's parents are less supportive, however, when the boy wakes them from their sleep, claiming he saw a UFO land just over the hill behind their house. Nevertheless, his dad agrees to investigate in the morning.
The next day, David sees his father acting really suspiciously, chugging piping hot coffee and shooing his son away when the boy asks about a wound on the back of his father's neck. Over the next couple days, more people in David's life begin to act strangely, including his mother, local police, Mrs. McKeltch (already the meanest teacher in school, played by Louise Fletcher of ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST), and a little girl in David's class. When those last two start chasing David, he finds shelter in the office of the school nurse, Linda (played by Karen Black, of such films as AIRPORT 1975 and EASY RIDER, and is in real life the mother of the boy playing David).
The boy tells his fantastic story to the caring nurse. She's skeptical, just like everybody else he's told, but after interacting with the teacher and the little girl, Nurse Linda begins to believe David. As these unlikely companions run from their seemingly body-snatched neighbors, David somehow finds his way aboard the alien ship, where the aliens (and the ship itself) look like monster designs from the classic Konami video game "Life Force" (if you haven't played it, get an emulator or something...it's a damn fun game). An example: the supreme Martian Intelligence looks like a live-action version of Krang from "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" at the end of a big long slimy tongue that sticks out of a, uh...sphincter-like hole in a wall of the ship.
The boy manages to escape, though now the Martians are determined to get their hands on him specifically! As avenues for rescue become dead-ends for David and Nurse Linda, David remembers that his dad has connections with a local Marine base! Once again, David tells his story, the story isn't entirely believed, but interactions with mind-controlled humans prove to General Wilson (James Karen, of POLTERGEIST and RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD) that the boy speaks the truth. And now...the hunt...is on...
INVADERS FROM MARS shares its basic plot (someone sees aliens, has to get others to believe they saw aliens) with STRANGE INVADERS, the film I reviewed last. There's an increased sense of urgency with this picture, though. The aliens are already in the main character's hometown here, so he has to pick up the pace in terms of finding believers. And since the aliens are in such close proximity, there are more opportunities to show their crazy physical forms, and the people under Martian control doing weird s*** (like the mean old Mrs. McKeltch eating a frog whole!).
Aside from better pacing, I also feel the film has a wider scope than STRANGE INVADERS. True, the action doesn't really leave this town, but we do get some interactions with NASA scientists (who provide the reason for just why the Martians come to Earth), and the military shows up ready to start some s*** with the aliens. And, let me add, it's quite refreshing to see the military in a positive light in one of these flicks. It happened all the time in the 50s (when the original film was made), but not so much in the more pessimistic 80s. Not that I'm a big fan of the military, per se, but I am a big fan of optimism. And the film isn't completely optimistic, but it's overall moreso than, say, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (which I also enjoyed a great deal, but I like variety).
The only really weak point about this flick is Hunter Carson as David. There are many times when the boy's lack of acting experience is impossible to deny. I can't quite decide if he sticks out like a sore thumb amidst so much fun stuff going on around him, or the fun stuff going on around him makes his performance seem less bad. *shrug*
Anyway, this is a solid, if silly, monster flick. Reading through the forums on IMDB (don't ask), a lot of people HATE this movie, most of them comparing it to the supposedly superior original (which I have yet to see). Without the context of the original, though, I had a good time with the movie. A nice mix of the vibe of 50s monster movies, with the fun effects work of the 80s. Buy it cheap or see if it pops up on Netflix. 3.8 stars out of 5.

Both of those are fun films, especially Nuke'em High. God, I love Troma flims. As do I. There so batshit insane that, even if they're bad, you know you'll be getting something out of them. DSR: I own the Strange Invaders/Invaders from Mars Double Feature DVD. Watched Mars, which I thought was fun, but never got around to Strange.

DSR: I own the Strange Invaders/Invaders from Mars Double Feature DVD. Watched Mars, which I thought was fun, but never got around to Strange. Yeah, as I mentioned, STRANGE wasn't all that great. Still, overall I had enough fun with my recent "Midnite Movies" purchases (I didn't review MORONS FROM OUTER SPACE or ALIEN FROM L.A. because neither are anywhere near a horror picture) that I went on Amazon and ordered 3 more: YONGARY/KONGAThe former is a Korean GODZILLA rip-off, the latter is a British KING KONG rip-off, starring Alfred Pennyworth himself, Michael Gough. RETURN OF DRACULA/THE VAMPIRETwo blood-sucker themed horror flicks from the 50s, both directed by Paul Landres (I don't know who he is, either, but I'm willing to find out). DR. GOLDFOOT AND THE BIKINI MACHINEA mid-60s spoof of spy films like (obviously) GOLDFINGER, starring Frankie Avalon as an American intelligence agent and Vincent Price as a mad scientist!

The Zombie Blu-Ray has been announced for a few days, but today seems like the first I heard of the extras.
Geez, I just cringe thinking of the infamous scene from that movie.

Watched a few horror films in the past two days:
Uncle Sam- Watched this William Lustig directed Fourth of July horror flick on, when else, the Fourth of July. For what it is, it's kind of fun (the fireworks death was amazing). It does take itself too seriously with the political jargon and hidden messages. Isaac Hayes was good as Jeb (surprised to see him here).
Battle: Los Angeles: Great effects, but the film becomes repetitive and, at times, boring. I appreciated the fact the characters were a bit fleshed out, with there being one surprisingly good emotional scene. However, all of that felt like it belonged in a different movie (preferably an actual war movie). Also, the design of the aliens was not my cup of tea.
The Descent 2- Watched this with a few friends and was surprised to find myself enjoying it. I liked the first one, but didn't expect much from this one. It's not as tension filled, but it is a fun monster flick.
Silent Rage- Chuck Norris kills an axe murderer, only for crazy scientists to resurrect him and make him an unstoppable killing machine. Solid flick with a really fun bar fight scene.

Funny how I watched TCM2 the other day, and now an extreme edition shirt of the film is made.

Isaac Hayes was good as Jeb (surprised to see him here). I've never tracked that one down but it's always sounded a little crazy (like the result of the sack race scene) I didn't like B:LA. Although, I found the scene where they caught an alien in order to figure out how to kill it...hilarious. Maybe I'm a bad person but them tearing at this poor alien, ripping things out, while some lady in the background is going "Maybe I can help, I'm a veterinarian!" Golden stuff. Also, how would that work. If I got caught by aliens and they started RIPPING stuff out of me to figure out how to kill me, I'd go into shock by the third pull. "Hmm...he's dead. Apparently, you must disable the liver to kill them." I saw Brad Jones/The Cinema Snob's review of this. It's on my giant to-do list for a future day. That movie is 6 different kinds of awesome even with the ridiculous comedic relief fat cop.

That movie is 6 different kinds of awesome even with the ridiculous comedic relief fat cop. I laughed uncontrollably when Norris told him to go call for back up. Norris starts fighting the punks in the bar and we pan out to the fat cop outside, talking to his buddy about the one biker's tits. Hysterical!

The more and more I read the plot, the more and more I keep thinking it's fake even though it's real.
Ooooooh what wacky hijinks will occur when her inheritance is a socially inept chainsaw wielding cannibal?! Seriously. I'm betting $5 right now...she will be a vegetarian. Isn't that WACKY?!
But I'm sure they'll stay "true to the original" (Or at least say that in an interview like every reboot/reimagine/remake/redo/redundant film made) while updating it for a newer (read: less likely to care that the first part of this sentence is a lie) generation.
And...and...multiple films? "Leatherface goes to Space" "LeatherFace and the Quest for the Golden Saw." "Leatherface Part 6"
Oh, and this follows Tobe Hooper's Original. I'm guessing the script writer decides that Leath-y should have both arms. Pssh. Whatever, dude.
Okay...I'm done. For now.

If you would rather go in completely cold, don't bother watching this trailer. I know the FD series is known for swerving the audience, so I don't know...but I wouldn't be shocked.
