Come on. How many times have we been here before, with injuries and then guys coming back to win the Rumble 'early' from their 'career-threatening' injuries? 2008 and 2010 come to mind. 2012 will be no different. It's in Randy Orton's home town of St Louis. He's pretty much the only babyface worth his salt on the roster available to do it - Sheamus isn't there yet, Cena's tied up with the Rock, Punk's the champ - all the pieces fit. {Spoiler}And you're telling me they'd do a spot where Orton got thrown down a flight of stairs if he was actually messed up? Please.

I don't know, man. Smackdown is pretty lacking in star power as it is. I don't think they would remove Orton just for the surprise at the Rumble. Maybe the severity of the injury is a work, though... Hmm... EDIT: And what is this about a {Spoiler} flight of stairs? Don't tell me that's a spoiler. EDIT 2: Thanks for changing it... I guess...

The surprise entrant winning the Rumble has been overplayed in recent years anyway, it takes all fun out of it when you expect number 28, 29, or 30 to win the whole thing.

They're not playing it up like it's career threatening, or him winning the rumble would be coming back early though. WWE.com just says he could be out "a few weeks". {Spoiler}Barrett only said 6 months at that house show to embellish things since there hadn't been a real diagnosis yet, and get more heat for the stairs spot.

However, WWE has a history of focusing squarely on the ratings and thinking entirely short-term.

{Spoiler}And you're telling me they'd do a spot where Orton got thrown down a flight of stairs if he was actually messed up? Please. Not true. {Spoiler}He wasn't actually thrown down a flight of stairs. Him and Barrett brawled off camera, and when the camera caught up with them, Barrett was at the top of the stairs and Orton was laying at the bottom to imply that Barrett had thrown him.

Okay, scratch that. I just found out they offered refunds due to Orton not appearing at a house show. They wouldn't have done that if he wasn't legit injured.

They shouldn't have given refunds, instead they should have had Masked Rodrigo Orton compete.

The refund makes it sound like it's for real, but they have been blurring the line lately.

It's kind of a shame that he got injured(it's a shame when anyone gets injured). I've really enjoyed Orton this year as he's been putting on some pretty good matches all year and putting over the younger talent. Hope he gets well soon and we can see the Viper back in the ring soon.
And who knows, this could be a blessing in disguise and we can see sheamus get an extra push. I don't mind seeing a push for Sheamus.

I couldn't imagine a more boring way to waste the rumble than to have Orton win it in 2012.

It was pretty obvious that edge was going to win in 2010. Everybody expected it around here. Yea he was legit injured but that was like 6 months before the rumble. Cena is the only good comparison here. I really hope Orton doesn't win again though. I'm sick of established former champions winning it. Even if a fresh face wins and loses at WM it's better than a main evener winning it IMO.

Yeah, considering they had Chimel announcing at recent house shows that he wouldn't be there and offering refunds I highly doubt they would go that far just to work the fans.

I feel that with Rock vs. Cena as THE main event for Mania, an established main eventer does not need to win the Rumble. I actually feel that Bryan did not need to cash in the MiTB early for that same reason.

{Spoiler}Seeing as it hasn't aired everywhere yet, I will say that they way they presented it on Smackdown, it didn't seem like a legit injury. They brawled all around the arena, went into the room, and once the cameraman finally went in there Orton was laid out at the bottom of the stairs and Barrett ran off. So they didn't show him actually getting thrown down them.
