Does anyone think that Jesse Ventura's commentary on Hogan matches seemed like he was trying to "bury" him? I mean, he WAS a heel commentator, but he was especially vicious during hogan matches, claiming hogan couldnt wrestle, just brawl, saying that he paid off the refs, hogan was at fault in all the feuds. Obviously Hogan retained popularity, and jesse WAS more fair when he was with monsoon (save for WM5), but still, the commentary for those matches are a lot different than most heel commentary stuff from that time.

Meh, he was probably just ribbing him a bit, since the Hulk Hogan character is basically a face version of the Ventura character.

They had legit heat. Jesse, as far as I know, has never forgiven Hogan for going to Vince when Jesse tried to form a union.
He didn't bury Hulk, but he made no effort to ever put him over. He was more than fair to all the faces, not Hogan.

He probably tried to be fair to Hogan like he did other faces, but because of the legit heat between them, he couldn't bring himself to do so I guess.

Considering Hogan could have used a gun on his opponents and Vince and Gorilla would have found a way to justify it, Jesse was just the counterbalance to them. He wasn't "burying" Hogan, he was just playing a strong heel. Hell, half the time he was right about Hogan's cheating.
The only comments that would seem to have an edge to them was when he derided Hogan's physique. Jesse was always more cut than Hogan and would bring it up every now and then.

As much as I love Jesse, I can't watch the Wrestlemania V Main Event between Hogan and Savage without cringing. Jesse absolutely lays into Hogan throughout that match. I know Jesse was always singing the praises of Savage, so he's bound to root for him in the match (regardless of being a face or heel) but he really goes too far and it takes away from what is a good match.

The post match Hogan celebration of WrestleMania V was pretty harsh by Jessie. He totally rips into Hogan for a few minutes non-stop to close the show. I was about 11 at that time and noticed something wasn't right and he was taking it a bit too far.

Essentially what you're saying is that if WWE has been consistent in muting Ventura's commentary that they do for other DVD's, the Mega Powers Collide match would be enjoyable to you. Not being smarky here at all, but that's just a thought that occurred to me.

I don't think he was much harsher on Hogan than he was on Ultimate Warrior. I always enjoyed Jesse's commentary, even when I was a Hogan mark as a kid.

Disagree as I kind of agree with a lot of what he says and I kinda get the impression Moonson did too. I also think it had some of his best comments the ace one being "isnt the challenger supposed to come out first"

"Bury" is the wrong word as Hogan was so insanely over it would have been impossible to bury him in the same way someone like Jerry Lawler did with Lance Storm's boring gimmick.
Was he too harsh on him? No, not really. Jesse always sided with the heels and Hogan was the biggest face of them all so I would expect him to give him heat. Maybe it was kind of personal at times but that just gave the commentary an extra edge and it never got so bad to the point of being unprofessional.

As Heenan said "Jesse has had more sleepless nights about Hulk Hogan than he has had about the state of Minnesota."
There's 3 rumors i've heard about why Jesse hates Hogan. 1) The unions things as mentioned above. 2) When Jesse was signing a new contract with Vince he asked that he be paid royalties for using his voice and likeness on the Colliseum video releases. Vince argued that no one else had that in their contract and so Jesse signed the contract. And then Jesse found out Hogan got paid for his likeness and voice being on Colliseum videos. So Jesse left WWF for WCW. This is somewhat supported by the fact that when WWE released that "Hits & Misses of Mick Foley" DVD in the early 00's in one of the matches Foley had with Vader in WCW, all of Jesse's commentary was edited out so it appeared Tony was just talking to himself. 3) According to Heenan, Jesse wanted to be the next Billy Graham. And Jesse idolised Graham. Then Graham dubbed Hogan the next Billy Graham and Jesse resented Hogan for that which lead to everything else.
Again, these are all rumors.

Priceless exchange during the Hogan/Warrior match from WM 6 when Hulk puts Warrior in a front facelock:
Gorilla: Boy, that'll take the starch right out of ya! Jesse: Absolutely. Just ask Richard Belzer.

Jesse when re-signing with WWE in 1987 waived his rights to royalties when he was (falsely) told that only feature performers got royalties from Coliseum releases. He found out after he left the company that announcers received royalties for their work which resulted in Jesse suing WWE and thus winning a judgement of over $800,000.

Did it really matter at that point whether Ventura was burying Hogan on commentary? Hogan was already so well established that it probably wasn't going to hurt him in the long-run. I also noted Ventura's commentary being harsh (for lack of a better term) during the Wrestlemania V match. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Ventura didn't give the gears to Hogan that badly during the Wrestlemania III match with Andre did he? It wouldn't have been the right time anyways. I've always heard the union rumour for being the reason for the heat between them too.
