Now I'm stuck with that awful open ending for AMC? Gah.

This makes the ending to AMC even worse, and possibly one of the biggest blunders in TV history. At least One Life to Live will have a chance to do things right.

Dang. Soaps were a big part of my childhood, and were still a staple whenever I'd go visit my mom before she died.

I read they're still trying to work things out, though it does look bleak. So much conflicting info.
I don't know, the longer anything took, the more used to AMC not being on I got. It sucks that this all happened.
Though the very end of AMC really didn't bother me. The last like, three seconds are the cliffhanger. And really, I can mentally handwave that to whatever I like. The important part was the 59 minutes and 57 seconds before that, with the party and speeches and stuff. That part was touching. Not to mention the whole week of episodes before it, focusing on each of the big families. The episode about the Hubbards in particular was emotional to me.

Less jobs for real actors and more jobs for reality people is not good.

I'm not even a big Soaps fan but that blows for the fans who were looking forward to more.

I don't understand why they would do this, soaps are quite cheap to produce and can garner a loyal fanbase. They can easily get enough advertising to cover costs and to make money, sell some extra footage to make more and your onto a winner.

I never watched the ABC soaps, but this is horrible for AMC fans. At least As The World Turns got a proper ending.
Now I just hope that Young and the Restless stays on. Though knowing Victor Newman, he'll throw a chair or something at execs trying to cancel his shoe.

This makes the ending to AMC even worse, and possibly one of the biggest blunders in TV history. At least One Life to Live will have a chance to do things right. They filmed the last episode of OLTL last Friday, likely with the assumption that the Prospect Park deal was still on. So they probably ended with a cliffhanger as well.

It's weird to see American soaps crashing so hard like this. Soaps are huge in the UK. Highest rated episode of anything on British television was an episode of EastEnders.
More specifically the one where Dirty Den served Angie the divorce papers at Xmas.

I couldn't imagine a BBC One schedule without EastEnders on it (except for Wednesday of course) or an ITV schedule without Emmerdale or Coronation Street. I could see Channel 4 without Hollyoaks though

I am not into daytime soap operas, I tell you one thing they should to modernise it for a more mainstream audiance is go to weekly format.
Weather it is a prime time drama, an action show, an action cartoon show, a anime, a manga, they all have one episode a week. In the case of some mangas one episode a month. Part of the fun it having that week to digest the storylines, speculate what will happen next. I can't imagine watching a show that has a continuing storyline, 5 days a week. It would mentally ware me out. Though I got through the second season of Gargoyles that used that 5 day a week format.

More specifically the one where Dirty Den served Angie the divorce papers at Xmas. The problem with soaps here is that their core demographic was housewives. This was fine in the 50's and 60's when a lot of women didn't work in order to be home with the kids. Now that a lot of women are getting into the workplace more than ever, daytime ratings have plunged big time. So the networks are going for cheaper-to-produce alternatives like talk shows instead. At least Young and the Restless is still very popular, especially among the college crowd.

Actually, One Life To Live has pretty strong ratings for it's timeslot (the Chew which replaced All My Children actually has like half the viewers of AMC). The problem is Brian Frons (ABC's head of Daytime TV) personally hates soaps and has set out from day one to get them off the schedule. He's much to ABC soaps like Jamie Kellner was to pro wrestling when he pulled the plug on WCW on Turner's cable channels.
