"Well he does kill himself with heroin everyday in his personal life, but he has great matches SO LET HIM STAY!" Um, yes actually. If you're friends with a guy and you're really worried about him, you try to make sure he gets help, you don't fire him. And I know that with this being indy wrestling "fire" might be the wrong word, but you know what I mean. And yes, so long as the heroin addict didn't shoot up right before a show so that he was in no condition to perform, I'd let him stay. Maybe he refused help? Addicts aren't often in a rush to get better. You and I have different concepts on company drug policy.

Was reading a couple of older Chikara threads from 2007(man, fun times, fun times), and just had a random thoughts: Is Robbie Ellis still kicking around out there somewhere?

He at least used to do our indies around here...I think he also has an art gallery in my town.
EDIT: He apparently doesn't have the art gallery any more, according to his site.

Just checked his facebook. he literally retired on tuesday Here's the message I had planned to retire from pro wrestling when the time came as quietly as possible. It was just easier and less sad for me to make the break and start the rest of my life. I got a couple of very supportive messages from friends when they learned about it, to which I responded with an explanation, thinking that that would be the end of it. But those messages began to get a life of their own, it seemed. And all were personal messages, not wall posts; so I started answering them one at a time as personally as I could. A public explanation was just too grandiose a thing to do. Soon, though, it became too difficult and the reasons for my retirement were beginning to be far off base. So, please forgive me for the public display that follows. After all, if I am right about the way Facebook works, it will be seen only by friends. I have had atrial fibrillation most, if not all, of my life. People with that condition can form blood clots as they age. The risk is actually very small, but real. I have always known that one day I would have to be on a blood thinner and when that became necessary, my wrestling days would come to an end. Bumps and bruises when on blood thinning medication would cause huge black and blue marks and probable internal bleeding which, obviously, is dangerous. For years, statistics indicated the need to start a blood thinner by age 65. Happily, that was changed when I was in my early 60’s and the age of 70 became the recommended time to begin medication. Even then, there is only a small elevated risk. I would have continued wrestling for another year or two or more and taken my chances. But, after all, it really is time. My family has wanted me to quit for years, though without any pressure to do so. I can hardly complain. It has been an unusually long and wonderful experience that I will carry with me forever. Rest assured: I am no sicker and no less able than I have ever been. So, I am retiring in what is still - and will continue to be - the best shape of my life. (Working out is no problem.) Quitting while ahead at age 69 makes sense. More than anything, I will miss my peers, who have become younger and younger and, therefore, to some extent, more and more out of reach. At the moment, at least, the thought of remaining involved as something other than an active participant is too difficult, while at the same time, retirement has currently produced more sadness than I might have imagined. Time, I know, is what I need. Thanks for everything.

That's a shame. Glad he managed to get out on his own terms, though, and calling it a career in pro wrestling at 69 is no mean feat. Hope his retirement is a happy one. Dude deserves it.

5/10/2012: CHIKARA fans! It's your Director of Fun, Wink Vavasseur, checking in again! Did you catch my video update yesterday? Those are new cufflinks! Until recently, you may have noticed there's been a bit of "radio silence" from DoF headquarters, but trust that I've been cooking up something tasty! And in addition to that delicious meal, I've also got some exciting CHIKARA news! I was brought into this professional wrestling enterprise as a man with experience and success in the business world. My specialty has always been finding kernels of potential in otherwise middling ventures, and then nurturing, restructuring and revolutionizing those kernels into spectacularly successful ears of corn (to follow the metaphor to its logical conclusion.) The phrase "business acumen" gets thrown around a lot. I don't know what it means, but I'm told I've got it in spades. That being said, I still don't feel like I've properly Wink-erized CHIKARA. Yes, certainly, I've been successful over the past year or so; I can't deny myself all the credit I'm due. The accolades have come my way, sure. However, it hasn't been the resounding success to which I've become so accustomed with all my previous business ventures. Something's off, and I think I've finally put my finger on it: after ten years, CHIKARA has gotten stale, predictable; it's gotten into a real rut. I need to do something big, something to really stir it up, and I've been wracking my brain trying to wrap my head around this problem. The thing that's been tripping me up these past few months is that I've been looking at CHIKARA as a regular business, when it has belonged in a different category altogether – Professional Wrestling (CHIKARA, et al.) is a sport. And what one thing has revolutionized professional sports over the past decade? Statistical analysis. That's right, I'm bringing sabermetrics to CHIKARA!! I'm the Brad-Pitt-as-Billy-Beane of CHIKARA, only more handsome (I kid!)! Over the past month, I've hunkered down with some top-notch eggheads and whiz kids, and created a program I've dubbed CHIKARAbermetrics! This program will look beyond mere win/loss records and size comparisons, going more in-depth with statistics like Pins Above Replacement (PAR) and Tag-Independent Earned Pin Average (TIEPA). It will weight the frequency of two-counts, and quantify other intangibles into numbers that I can insert into Pythagorean Expectation equations. Using these numbers, I will create match-ups and reorganize tag-teams and stables in a way that will capitalize on the skills of the CHIKARA roster and reinvigorate the sport of professional wrestling. As an example, take the CHIKARA wrestler with the highest Value Over Replacement Wrestler (VORW): Sara Del Rey. If she were to, say, be added to the group F.I.S.T., they would be mathematically unbeatable. On the other hand, take the other hand: imagine a trio made up of all left-handers! The mathematical possibilities are endless. In honor of CHIKARA's ten year anniversary of the same thing over and over again, I've decided to institute CHIKARAbermetrics to spice up Year # 11! The drought is over, wrestling fans. CHIKARA will be exciting once again! WV

That said though, I'm curious if this stat thing leads to anything, or if this is just kind of a "filler" blog.

Ooh, and, just spitballing here, looking over at Osaka Pro Wrestling American fansite, it's just about time for them to kick off their annual Tag Festival round robin tourney. What with Jigsaw's....shocking success in this year's Tennozan, it makes me wonder if Chikara will be invited to send over a gaijin team.

Send the Colony over so we can get a break of them versus GEKIDO.

Me too, and If I had to guess, I'd say it's probably gonna be a jab at the way WWE has thrown together tag teams. Oh, in other news, the thread for The Shard's blog on 101 has yielded an interesting theory about GEKIDO. 17, the theory has it, is not the leader. The person calling the shots is somebody inside Chikara, somebody who knows the weaknesses of the entire roster due to working alongside them in the recent past. So this could be another storyline with a mole. (Not necessarily a bad thing; depends on where it goes and how well it's done.)

Chikara loves that trope. Tim Donst alone has done it no less than twice.
