This has to be a recent thing because I didnt know about it until observing some recent instances. Appearently people will choose to either watch or not watch a movie based on what rating it got on Rotten Tomatoes. RT has been around for years and 10 years ago I never heard anyone talking about it.
Me personally, I have never been to that site nor do I care what it says. I base seeing movies on weather the plot/story or actors/cast seems interesting or intriguing to me. I dont care about what ratings it gets on that site.
I mean just earlier, some guy was talking about some movie he hadnt seen and he said it sucks because of its low RT rating and he said he won't watch it.
I do not like that mentality or attitude. I am a fan of movie critics but I never decided to watch or not watch something based on their reviews.
If I wanna watch a movie I am NOT going to go on RT and look up its rating and choose to not watch it if it didnt get a high enough rating.
Yeah so in closing, why do so many people use this site as their "bible" I do not get it.

I'm saying that site seems to have a lot more influence on people than it used to have. Some guy will say "theres a lot of good movies coming out soon" and he'll say that just based on looking at their RT ratings and not having actually seen them. That bugs me.

It takes a lot for me to want to go to the movies. I have to really want to see it to go in the first place. In the summer is pretty much the only time I will make a thing of going (me and my friends are ALREADY making plans for Dark Knight Rises, to show how big a deal it is. ;D)
With that said, if I'm just going to the movies just to have something to do and theres nothing that I'm just DYING to see, I'll check out Rotten Tomatoes and see whats being said to be good by SEVERAL people. I'm not mindlessly following a single opinion, I'm looking at a compiled list of several critics and movie goers giving their opinions on a movie and going off of that. Even then, I may not go with the best reviewed thing if I think something looks more interesting.
I don't see anything wrong with checking reviews before going to see movies, and I certainly don't see any reason to be bothered by people that do.

This reminds me a lot of the seeming importance of metascores to a lot of gamers. I remember seeing people freaking out over Skyward Sword's potential metascore freefall after the 7.5 Gamespot review, and I've heard something similar happened with Uncharted 3.

When anybody decides how they feel about any branch of media based off of what a critic says, it irritates me. Media is so subjective, just because Critic A said this movie was awful doesn't mean you HAVE to feel the same as him. You tend to see it a lot with video games as well, I'm in the camp of "play it your own damn self and form your own damn opinion". There have been movies/games/albums that got slammed by critics that I enjoy, and vice-versa. Get it, watch it for yourself, form your own opinion. Seems pretty cut and dry to me.

I think the RT meter is a lot more useful than critic hating people seem to think. I remember a few years ago, I was excited as all hell for The Black Dahlia because it had an amazing trailer and DePalma directing it, until I saw on RT that it was being bashed to all hell. So I saw it (and thought maybe it was just a not interested thing), and it really really sucked ass. On the reverse spectrum, last year I thought Easy A looked like another boring ass teen comedy that would bring nothing new to the genre. Then, I saw it was getting really good reviews on RT so I sucked it up and saw it and loved the hell out of it.
I don't think it's a be all end all judgment of movies, but it's useful to me since I see about 60 movies a year in theaters.

Yeah video games would apply as well. I dont get why people place such a high importance on these things. I didnt notice this 5 or 10 years ago.

It's a pretty good judge of movie quality. Sure there have been a few I have disagreed with, but for the most part it has been pretty spot on except for the movies they seem afraid to diss... New Moon.

RT rates bad films higher than they should be and good films lower than they should be. I've never seen a RT rating and thought it was accurate.

Don't really go to the cinema much now (too expensive) and don't really buy DVD's but when I buy a video game, a lot of the time the reviews that it's got do effect me buying it. If only because I don't want to spend £40 on a game and have it suck.
Like the X-Men game what came out in October. I was all set to buy it, saw that it got s*** reviews and that most sites mentioned it took like 4 hours to complete so I decided to leave it. I'm not gonna pay £40 for a game that might not be all that good and lasts only 4 hours. I'll get it when it goes down in price.
I do however prefer to look at the user reviews score rather than the critics. I trust users more because a lot of the time, critics seem to give games high-scores entirely based on the past reputation. It's honestly the only reason I can see as to why obviously flawed games like FFXIII got 9/10 and 10/10 from many review websites.
Users of the game will really be a lot more honest and accurate than paid critics/reviewers imo.

I find it pretty informative, but to get a good feel for the movie you really should look at the individual reviews and not just the overall rating.
Sometimes I'll disagree but no system is going to totally reflect your personal taste.
I also pay attention to the netflix star-rating. Rare that anything rated less than 3*'s is worth watching. They also have reviews you can look at that but they are written by other netflix customers rather than movie reviewers.

I personally don't like it. At the end of the day, it should be YOUR choice whether or not a movie is worth seeing. Is it good? Does it suck? One way of finding out is by watching it yourself. 2,000 people may hate the movie, but it might appeal to your tastes and you could end up liking it.
The same applies to video game reviews. "I'm not gonna bother playing this game because IGN gave it 6.5". Really?

My personal approach is that I'll only see a movie or play a game if I'm interested in it, but I do look at reviews first just to help to gauge things a bit. Hell, I also like to look at reviews of movies and games that I never intend to watch / play.

Really I only listen to reviews when I'm on the fence about something.

It does help sometimes like one poster said earlier. I didn't really care much into seeing 50/50 or Easy A because well I didn't like the trailers but the scores were high on the RT so I gave it a chance and they were pretty good movies. The biggest misconception that people have about RT is they think the percentage is a score. It's just positive reviews over negative reviews and three stars out of five or a 6.0 counts as a positive review. Some movies got a 90% score based on hundred reviews saying the movie is alright or ok.

Yeah, unlike say GameRankings.com or Metacritic, which just average out the review scores, Rotten Tomatoes' rating is just the percentage of the critics who have submitted a review for that particular film that is positive. In other words, the RT score is more trustworthy than most other aggregate sites, as it is the percentage that likes it.

I know Harold and Kumar's Christmas movie ended up with a 72% but an average of 6.2/10 because it was everybody saying it was just okay or kind of solid (I really didn't like it at all though).
