The end of the traditional work day?

I'm talking about the 9-5 ham 'n' eggers.

There's a study out that says that the younger workforce employees(Gen 'Y') are willing to work for less pay in exchange for more flexible hours. LESS PAY. This no doubt pleases employers who like to have people working all the damn time. I know most people don't have the guts to stand up to their bosses and this is a supposed "demand" of theirs?

Look, I'm not lazy, but I'm of the belief that unless it's an emergency, or you're a doctor, cop etc. 8 hours is good enough for a work day. You wanna work overtime? Fine. Volunteer, otherwise leave me the f*** alone after my shift is up and I'll see you again tomorrow. Weekends and holidays? No thanks, but the younger generation(which will be replaced by an even younger generation) is willing to work for less pay and odd hours.

Those hours work out well for them I guess, but still, are these people going to go home and play with their baby at 2 in the morning or something?

I understand the 9 to 5 work schedule, but when I was working with a local tobacco company from the age of 22 to 25, my 1pm to 9pm schedule worked out much better for me as I liked to stay awake after my shifts and I didn't have much of a social life.

On a somewhat similar note, my company recently suggested having its employees work a four day ten hour week as opposed to the normal five day eight hour week. That way we'd still get our forty hours and get a three day weekend on top of it.

I was completely on board for that, but sadly I haven't heard anymore talk of it for a few months, so I'm assuming it didn't go through.

I have to get up a little earlier, but I miss the a.m. and p.m. rush hour for the most part.

I hear that. I work 7-4, but mainly because a lot of the people I deal with are on the east coast.

I'm up at like 5:30am PST, but having no one else on the train is worth the adjustment in sleep schedule.

I work for a hospital with a completely random schedule and the concept of a consistent regular schedule like an impossible dream but it'd sure be welcome. Last Sunday I got home from work at 5am and I had to leave for work Monday morning at 5am. That kinda jumbling around can really mess with your head. I hate it but it's a living. However I would prefer an 11am or 3pm start to a 9am start. I hate getting up in the morning.

I have a weird work schedule, too.

Usually the earliest I work is 4:00 p.m., and I'll stay until no later than midnight (unless we're super-busy) and other times I go in at either 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. and stay till around 2:00 a.m.

Other times, I'll go in at 11:00 a.m. and work till 9:00 p.m.-ish.

It pays my bills, though, so whatever.

I work midnight to eight. I prefer it over nine to five. Only thing that would make it better is if I got the weekend off instead of getting the middle of the week off which is Wednesday and Thursday.

I work 8-5 in IT with an hour lunch and I dont much care for it...Really can never get needed things done during the week as most places are closed by the time I get out of the office...like banks, doctors, dentists, dmv things like that

I work 7 to 7, Monday-Friday.

But I get overtime, so that's ok. I would, however, like a different shift. Those are the exact hours that my daughter is awake, so I really only get to see her on weekends =o(

The 9-5 day is a dinosaur at this stage; it's a schedule that tends to hurt productivity in most settings. Offer more flexibility, and watch more work get done.

Ok, here is a the closest to a "typical" work week for me.

Monday - 9:30a - 5:00p
Tuesday - 11:30a - 10:00p (plus overnight ending at 7am)
Wed Off
Thursday - 7:00a - 5:00p
Friday - 8:00a - 2:00p

Various weekend hours from time to time.

That is not of my choosing it is how I have to do things if I want to work.

Personally, I have no need to work a full eight hours given I'm living in a house with four different people to bring in money. I'd sooner just have a handful of hours, at a reduced rate if needed, to give me a little extra.

I had to work weird hours as a journalist, and to be honest, I hated it. That was more of a consequence of requiring someone to be there at all hours in case news was happening, and there were regular shifts, but I was stuck with nights and weekends most of the time. It made it a nightmare to get weekend work done, which made it pretty hard to actually get another position and advance. Hence why I'm no longer doing it.

I have worked evenings my entire life. I'd rather do that forever than to work one day shift. They are awful.

My work requires that my schedule be a little odd compared to what most people are used to, because we need to be available at hours convenient to our students. So I start and end work relatively late. I begin at noon on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and begin at 1:00 PM on Thursdays and Fridays, and leave at about 9 PM every night. I also work on Saturdays, and my Saturday hours are earlier: Beginning at 10 AM and finishing at 7 PM (again, because that's the most convenient for our students). Each day has a one-hour lunch break in the middle. Sundays and Mondays are my weekends, though once every couple of months I work Sundays (for which I get overtime pay).

I don't mind being able to sleep in, but sometimes I think earlier hours all around would be more convenient; by the time I finish work on a typical weekday, most stores and such are closed, so it's hard to get errands done unless I go during my lunch break.

I'm at work right now and I'll be working until 4 am. However, that will be only for today since I usually work from 8:30 to 16:45.

I work 8:30 to 5:30, and lunch is variable... sometimes at the desk, sometimes a half hour to go get something, sometimes an hour if people want to go out. I'm a writer for a company, and I find the hours completely tolerable (and helpful in terms of being around when people I need to talk to are also around).

That said, I would love it if my employer let me do something different, like the flex time 10h/day 4d/week schedule someone mentioned above, or occasional telecommuting. Flexibility is nice. Getting paid is nicer, though, so if I can't have it, I'm not gonna take a pay cut to get it.
