Trying to build a boat and escaping the island is the opposite of a good idea. If you don't know how to build a good, ocean worthy boat and try to sail 1000 miles over the ocean, you put yourself in a worse situation. Unless it's Escape from Gilligan's Island. The idea when you're lost outdoors, it's better to stay where you are than just get more lost.
As for the show, I liked it better in color and when Mary Ann and The Professor weren't just "The Rest". And Mary Ann, yes.

After so long though, waiting for rescue doesn't make sense. Also, apparently Skipper and Gilligan could have managed the seas.
I'd also like to point out cracked this week stealing my jokes. The bastards.

I wish that someone would make a Gilligan's Island/LOST crossover.

Did you know that you can sing most of Emily Dickenson's poems to the theme of Gilligan's Island?
There's your random piece of pointless trivia for the day.

I'm still wondering how something I saw on IMDB a few years ago would have gone if it had gone through:
A Gilligan's Island movie with Julia Louis-Dryfuss (spelling?) as Mary Ann.

Which were supposedly Sherwood Schwartz's picks for the supposed remake movie.

It's been a while since I watched the early days of the show, but didn't they just make a power source for the radio, and had the radio with them from the start? Also, I seem to remember an ep where they did repair the boat, but the glue they used was only temporary and it made things worse rather than better. Eh, in the end they got off the island, ended up back on it, got off it again, opened and ran an island resort, and hosted a Harlem Globetrotters game where they took on a bunch of robots.

Roger Howarth (from One Life To Live) looks a lot like Bob Denver, and I think he could pull it off:

If I'm casting this thing Samuel L. Jackson is the Professor.
Gilligan: Hey Professor, nice work, you made a radio out of a coconut.
Samuel L. Professor: You're goddamn right I did, now if you and you're fatass buddy over there would go and round up some wood, I'd get that motherf****** boat seaworthy and we'd be back in Hawaii drinking Mai Tai's!!!

I think Andrea Boehlke would make a good Mary Ann, even though she's blond...

No, no, no...you got it all wrong! Professor built a rocket ship to get them off the sialnd & they wound up on another planet!

That was just a cartoon that Thurston Howell IV (who was another thing from the Gilligan's Island/Harlem Globetrotters crossover movie) made in honor of his parents and their friends spending so much time on the island.
