I just got a book about this topic for Christmas, and am already enjoying it. Its a pretty morbid topic, to be fair, and most Americans do not know much about it. The Monster of Florence was/is a serial killer who committed a string of murders in and around Florence, Italy in the 70's and 80's. He was similar to the Son of Sam in New York; he mostly attacked young couples making out in their cars, though he also killed a young gay couple who he probably mistook for a man and woman, and also a pair of hikers in a tent. While there has not been a Monster killing in almost 20 years, the investigation is still ongoing, and some of the theories that have come out of it are pretty bizarre. One of them involved the Monster being an agent for a Satanic cult that included politicians and businessmen who were using the killings as part of some ritual. As the story goes, Thomas Harris was on vacation in Italy when this theory came out and after reading the coverage of the investigation he was fascinated by the idea of a wealthy aristocrat who is secretly a serial killer, and this became the basis for Hannibal the Cannibal and the books that made him so famous. I understand that a movie is in the works now about the killings and the investigation, which I doubt will be any good since most movies based on such cases suck. I was curios to see if anyone here has heard of this infamous case and knows anything more.

Never heard of it, but the Harris story sounds familiar. Was hoping it was similar to the Beast that Brotherhood of the Wolf was based on.
