What could have been put in the CBA to help teams keep stars? Unless you want to get rid of free agency they will leave. Maybe get rid of bird right with a trade so stars can't get money while moaning they want to go to one team getting rid of all leverage for the trading team

As Brandon Roy contemplates retiring from basketball, an ominous quote emerged via Joe Freeman on Twitter.
A source said that Roy met with doctors on Thursday and was told after his knee evaluation: "You can't do this. You might end up not walking." Roy is said to be very emotional and it's doubtful he'll meet with the media today. It sounds like his career is over, although we're still awaiting for it to become official. Another sad story in a generally sad day as training camps open and free agency starts.

Such a sad end to what could've been a promising career.

Stern hasn't resigned yet? What are you waiting for David? And while we're at it, let's check out the "basketball reasons" defense. Does it hold up? ehhh

If the Magic can prove tampering did take place, remember the Joe Smith Timberwolves fiasco? Yeah....the Nets and Rockets will probably get it worse.

The NBA honestly has the worst parity I've ever seen in a professional league. It's pretty much the Lakers, Celtics, Spurs, Heat, (and the Knicks are getting there) and screw everyone else. If you're lucky, you can sneak in with a Dallas or Chicago, but otherwise, you're f***ed. Even baseball has better parity than this, and MLB is a league where the Yankees, Red Sox, and Phillies dominate everyone else financially. In the last 30 seasons played to a championship (so not inlcuding the current NFL and NHL seasons, 1994 MLB and 2005 NHL) the NBA has had only 9 different teams win titles (Lakers, Sixers, Celtics, Pistons, Bulls, Rockets, Spurs, Heat and Mavericks) compared to 15 each in the NHL and NFL and 19 in MLB. I thought those numbers maybe a little skewed so I pulled it back to 20 years and the NBA is still in last with 8, NHL has 12 and MLB and NFL tied at 13.

Glen Davis getting traded to Orlando makes me laugh. Remember when he accidently knocked down that kid in Orlando and the kid's dad acted like a total bitch over it? Reunited and it feels so good!

I thought those numbers maybe a little skewed so I pulled it back to 20 years and the NBA is still in last with 8, NHL has 12 and MLB and NFL tied at 13. Yeah, I think the MLB's parity is a little underrated if anything. Sure, the Yankees have a gazillion world series wins, but the vast majority of those were back in Ye Olden Days when people stayed with their teams forever and free agency wasn't really a thing. They're "only" won 7 since Steinbrenner took over the team. Which is still a lot, but that's what happens when you have one really solid team that's able to build a dynasty in the second half of a decade. Looking at last decade of World Series wins (2001-2011). 2001 - Diamondbacks 2002 - Angels 2003 - Marlins 2004 - Red Sox 2005 - White Sox 2006 - Cardinals 2007 - Red Sox 2008 - Phillies 2009 - Yankees 2010 - Giants 2011 - Cardinals So Cards and Sox are the only two teams that repeat, and they only win twice. The Cards, Rangers, Giants, Yankees, and Phillies also appear in losing efforts, along with the Rays, Tigers, and Astros. Meanwhile, looking at the same timespan in the NBA... 2001 - Lakers 2002 - Lakers 2003 - Spurs 2004 - Pistons 2005 - Spurs 2006 - Heat 2007 - Spurs 2008 - Celtics 2009 - Lakers 2010 - Lakers 2011 - Mavericks Lakers and Spurs both win more than twice and still were in a lot of finals. The Celtics, despite winning once, were in the finals a lot, too.

Someone needs to sit the players down and let them know they arent all brilliant business men. They're basketball players. And it behooves them financially to make as much money in a short career as possible and make the league as entertaining as possible.
I don't think theres great parrity in the league to begin with and the players szeem determined to make the situation even worse because they want to form a winning team with their best buddies.
We'll be seing 3 or 4 teams win 65+ games a season and the rest of the league with absolutely no hope of winning.

The Celtics, despite winning once, were in the finals a lot, too. Not to totally derail it but here's what hurts the MLB. Unless you are a big market team you basically have to really good at drafting and guessing who to keep and let go to get to a 2-3 year window where you can make the playoffs and then you fall off again. Sure you might not bottom out but its a balancing act that can make a fan of a certain team frustrated the year after a good year and then see the Yankees or Red Sox always in a spot to get to the playoffs consistently. Sure there are big markets who don't know how to spend like the Cubs or Mets lately and small markets like the Pirates or Royals who do nothing right but there a whole lot of them who seem to be waiting in line to be playoff good for their turn that might not come.

On the opposite side of things, you have teams like the Rays who spend and draft brilliantly. They're always in contention for a playoff spot lately, in spite of having a horrible payroll and an anemic fanbase.
Baseball's biggest problem is the owners who are either greedy as shit and don't care about the team or owners that are complete idiots. You rarely see players acting as immature as the NBA's.

Baseball's biggest problem is the owners who are either greedy as s*** and don't care about the team or owners that are complete idiots. You rarely see players acting as immature as the NBA's. Because baseball, even though it's an individual's game, isn't nearly as dependent as basketball is on individuals making or breaking games. NBA players are so outspoken because of their importance. One single person would never carry a team to a World Series like LeBron carried the Cavs to the Finals.
