I even bought the CD from that group called Dream, who were known, by the way. I totally have Dream songs in my ipod. They were the first girl group Diddy put together, before Danity Kane, I believe. ETA: I got curious and looked them up - I think they were actually a group before Diddy signed them. I doubt anyone cares, but there you have it.

as far as bieber..
I dont think it's peoples masculinity being threatened. I dont think it's the 14 year old girls screaming for him.
It's who bieber is. He's the face of the autotuned generation. People who are products of production. Overly packaged. People with no emotion or anything to say.
I think thats alot of the reaction to teen idols. Theyre all products and it just offputs people on a subconcious level because people realise it.

I think we're all overlooking the bigga pichsa. It's not just Bieber hate, or boy band hate, or any sort of particular hate -- it's the refusal of much of the population to adopt a "live and let live" attitude. There's not much that bothers me more, especially in internet culture, than people who clamor against the very existence of some entity simply because they don't like it. These people would rather take something out of the world that brings joy to thousands, or millions, just to suit their own personal taste. The absolute disgusting height of selfishness.
*EDIT* -- this isn't to say I haven't been guilty of it myself from time to time, but then, who hasn't?

Not a fan, I am just indifferent. As I am indifferent to a lot of things. Maybe they feel hate will make them feel cool, because it seems today hating something is cool. You say Teen idol hatred is creepy, I say celebrity worship is creepy. I guess at the end of the day we are all losers that feel the need to be passionate about something, whether it be hate or love, but I guess we are never, NEVER careful with our words that we hurt other people. I believe it is angst that is the right word. Can't really go into details, but I think we're getting closer and closer to there being no such thing as an "acceptable guy image". Masculinity is pretty frowned upon, especially by the academic and journalistic bourgeois. What about acceptable female image? What about that? But going a little off topic, and I don't intend for this to be political, and I apologize for it, but I noticed when a lot of us see these teen, mostly pretty boy celebrities we will always mock their appearance than their music and say how gay they are and look and make jokes that they are possibly gay(probably to destroy their fans dreams) but when real homophobic sentiments happen to actual ones we get defensive about it and scream bigotry. What do a lot of us have problems with more, feminine looking guys or homosexuals? It may just be the people I've encountered and places I've been (especially on the internet), but that isn't really much of the issue. Again, rules of the board, I can't get into what it _is_ these days.

Do I like Justin Bieber/Nsync/BSB/etc? No, I do not. However, I don't hate them either. I nothing them. They have zero influence on my life. I don't seek their music out, so as a result, I rarely hear it. If I'm out at a restaurant and that music comes on, I don't act like it's the worst thing I've ever heard, I just ignore it. That's my policy on stuff I dislike, I ignore it. Why waste time and energy on things I don't care about?

I miss the days when rock stars were the ugliest motherf***ers on the planet Earth. Seriously, they were hideous. They had to rely on talent.

I miss the days when rock stars were the ugliest motherf***ers on the planet Earth. Seriously, they were hideous. They had to rely on talent. I have two different perspectives on this: 1. It sounds like you are quoting one of those YouTube users who act like the past is much better than the present. 2. If you really feel this way, then that is your opinion.

Ok, I think I can explain this.
My first memory of the shrieking female obsession was Leo in Titanic. I watched, I enjoyed the movie, but really didn't see it as anything beyond a quasi bland love story with cool special effects. I grew annoyed by the constant fanning over this squinty eyed heartthrob and didn't get why the girls I had a crush on were so lovestruck by the line: "He drew landscapes."
Fast forward a little while and we have Backstreet Boys, once again, not terrible, one or two tolerable songs, but still think they are undeserving of the heaps of screaming they get. I lump this in subconciously with the annoyance I had towards Leo.
Fast forward a few more generations of fame acts, and that annoyance has reached a boiling point, where everytime an unspectacular manufactured scream inducer comes along makes me automatically hate them more than I should.
It's pure conditioning really. Or it just has to come with the primal dislike of that scream women do.
