You know the ones I'm talking about (Spongebob, Adventure Time, Regular Show, and Gumball). What is it about animated shows going the Ren and Stimpy route by being as random, strange, and gross as possible? I realize there are fans of those fans I mention above, but I just can't get into these shows and I really tried giving those shows as shot.
I just feel like those shows are being random just for the sake of being random. I guess this makes me love Phineas and Ferb/My Little Pony:FIM more for being more straight forward with their formulas. But my question is when and why did animated kids show because so random, stange, and gross just for the sake of it?

Same reason pop music today is more dirty and risque and video games are more graphic and violent than ever. The envelope in all forms of entertainment keeps getting pushed and pushed and eventually it will break.

I dont think that it's really all that new. I mean, how old is Ren and Stimpy?

I dont think that it's really all that new. I mean, how old is Ren and Stimpy? This. Not to mention a lot of old Nicktoons like Rocko's Modern Life for example.

Because they're thinking outside the box?
Or they're wasted when they come up with this stuff, I dunno.

Because it worked with Ren and Stimpy 20 years ago, so they keep trying to duplicate it.

It caught on with a show or two so every other show is doing its damndest to cash in on it.
And yeah, while I enjoy Adventure Time and Regular Show I'm inclined to agree that My Little Pony and Phineas & Ferb are the best things going.

Random "out-there" stuff seems to work very well when you think how popular things like that are on YouTube (many views and memes) such as the Stu making chocolate pudding at 4 AM.
I would not be surprised if one of the goals for cartoonists is to intentionally get a meme to catch on.

Because they're thinking outside the box? Or they're wasted when they come up with this stuff, I dunno. Its no longer thinking outside the box when a large number are doing the same. Ren and stimpy, or even Early Spongebob was Outside the norm. Now its an alterntive that is almost the norm.

I dont think that it's really all that new. I mean, how old is Ren and Stimpy? Seriously. And to the guy that said video games are more violent than ever, must I remind you that Grand Theft Auto 3 was 10 years ago? And it wasn't even the most violent game of it's time. I will agree that cartoons are more random and nonsensical these days. But still, including Spongebob in that list is kind of silly since it's been around since 1999. I'm 24, that show came out when I was 11 or 12.

Because it is probably easier/cheaper to produce a show like that than something like Avatar.

It could also be that a lot of the new people creating animated shows grew up watching Ren & Stimpy and Rocko's Modern Life, and want to make shows in the same mold as those.

I think it's that they know that people in the teens watch these shows too and they try to get both kids and teens to watch the new shows.

It could also be that a lot of the new people creating animated shows grew up watching Ren & Stimpy and Rocko's Modern Life, and want to make shows in the same mold as those. I'll say it's 60% that, and 40% (yes, arbitrarily chosen numbers) that the networks figure this is the "ADD generation", so shows that seemingly jump from random gag to random gag are lauded. Which isn't to say most of these shows are bad, but it's just what's "in".

A lot of that weirdness is due in part to the rise of creator driven animation.
A show like Adventure Time or Regular Show wouldn't have lasted long in the Saturday Morning era due to network moderating. The increase availability of cable eventually made Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon more attractive for creators to pitch shows to, and thus we wind up with more experimental concepts like a pie-faced 12-year-old with a sword fighting monsters with his elastic dog, or a raccoon and a bluejay working for a gumball machine.
Aiming for both adults and children seems to be the way to go today (which even MLP:FiM and P&F do).

I think it started in 2009 or 2010. Adventure Time, Regular Show, and Gumball are good shows that remind me a little of the shows I used to watch on Cartoon Network such as Ed, Edd, & Eddy and Johnny Bravo.

Regular show isn't really all that gross to me. Random at times, yes. In all honesty, I prefer that to MLP and P&H because I'm a 20-something year old dude that can relate to some of the stuff that goes on in that show. Plus, that's the kind of humor I'm into.
