The meaning of best in this case is as follows:
Films having a score of 75 or more from Metacritic, and having a worldwide gross $100 million or more as reported by Box Office Mojo. As you can see, films fitting that criteria are few in number. So choose the best of the listed critical and box office successes.

My two favourites (and eff all the Brits who will tell me that it was a show first), but The Trip and The Descendants.

The lack of a Muppets option saddens me.

2011 was a very weak year for Hollywood, but if I have to choose a movie I would say "In Time"

You mean to tell me that Super 8 actually did not qualify according to those standards? I honestly don't know what they were expecting. It was a film that focused on a cast of kids. It isn't going to be Alien. Expecting it to be so will lead you to view it in a discriminating fashion. The film itself was pretty good, mainly because it had the best cast of child actors that I have seen in a really long while. Elle Fanning in particular could develop into a really big deal as she gets older.
