The more I think about it the more I like the idea. I'm sure that being last on the list I'd be able to see someone in a presenter role to decide if it was for me.
I'm good to start whenever, quite a lot of free time on my hands and I've been meaning to watch more classic movies.

Ok, so ill post the first thread on Saturday or Sunday. Discussion on the film can start whenever, but we should really all try and have the film(in this case, pulp fiction) watched by like thursday or Friday so we can have some nice discussion over the weekend. And while I don't think we should necessarily have "rules", per say, I think some guidelines, both for those leading the week's discussion and those simply participating in it, should be written up and, of course, agreed upon by the majority. However, with that said, I want the discussions to be more "organic" in nature, with their direction dependent on the week's leader. With the more lax format will thrust more responsibility on the leader, though, since they're more responsible for the structure and flow. Feel free to make any suggestions for guidelines, tips, etc. For instance, here are a few ideas for some general guidelines or suggestions for all participants. {Spoiler} - Watch the film! While that may sound obvious, what I mean is, do your best to watch it during that film's week, for no other reason than that the it's still fresh in your brain.
- Any Viewpoint or Opinion is valid and acceptable, but try and formulate so well thought-out ideas and statements, and try and bring something new to the discussion. Posting "the movie this week sucked and was boring", while a valid opinion, is much less constructive than saying why the film didn't work for you, why it was boring, etc. Also, I personally feel that being an active, thoughtful participant each week will bode well for the success of your discussion come your week.
- Don't be an ass about what films others select. We'll all get our turn(unless you decline*). If you have absolutely zero interest in watching that week's film, you may (politely) say as much, and leave it at that. Don't go on some rant about how bad the movie is and question the poster's cinematic taste. After all, you'll hopefully be presenting a film as well.
Here are some potential guidelines for the week's presenters/discussion leaders. These are less like rules and more just to facilitate discussion. Some, though, are "ruley": {Spoiler} - Pick your (next) movie ASAP. There are a few reasons behind this one. 1)Gives you plenty of time to think about how you want to frame the discussion, at least in it's initial stages. 2)Let's all the club members prepare accordingly, rental/etc-wise. 3)Allows other, future presenters to see what movies are being done before them. As far as my opinion is concerned, I'd prefer to use the "Dibs"/first-come, first served rule, so let me(or whoever) know as soon as possible.
- When picking a movie, there are a few things to consider: A)What does this film mean to you? A film that holds some significance in your life is going to be a lot easier than a film you don't care about. B)Is the film easily obtainable? Don't pick a super-obscure movie that hasn't been released to home markets in 20 years. With that said, don't feel you're stuck picking only blockbusters. Use the "average videostore" rule of thumb. If you can go into your average, normal video rental store and they'd carry the film, then I'd say it's good to go. C)Does the film warrant further discussion? I don't mean that you need to look for the most high-concept arthouse films possible, but pick something a little deeper than a SyFy Original.
- Once you're presentation week approaches, start doing your research. The most obvious thing, of course, is watching the movie. Again, don't go into this discussion armed only with a two-year-old memory of the last time you watched this film. Be fresh. Also, listen to the commentary. Read some stuff, even if it's just the Wiki page. Go into the discussion with at least a little knowledge of the film you're presenting.
Now, as far as the actual discussion threads/presentations go: - Post your thread sometime on the Sunday your week starts(not before or after). Use some variation of the title "F.A.N. Movie Club:(Movie Title).
- Provide some substance to your OP. Give us a little contextual info(actors, director, country, etc). Post a trailer or two, or a movie poster. Something to build off of.
- Additionally, add some discussion points to the OP if you want. If there's one aspect of a movie that you feel is incredibly important and should be a main discussion topic, say so. Let people see that and have that in the back of their mind as they (re)watch it. One thing that I'm going to do, personally, when I present, is lifted from the Criterion Collection. For many of their releases, they release little promotional videos called their "3 Reasons" series, and it's 3 reasons why Criterion feels that that particular film is noteworthy, or rather, what's noteworthy about that film. It's a really easy way to frame your discussion before it even happens.
- You're more or less "in charge" of the week's discussion. If it is veering off-topic or simply is non-existent, then it's more or less up to you to try and get it focused on the film. That's why going into the discussion with a bit of knowledge can really come in handy.
- Somewhere in the thread's OP, probably the end, state next week's presenter and their film(I'll probably get a Google Doc. started with a list of all that).
Again, these are just some guidelines that I think may help it go smoothly at first. Anyone and everyone is free to make suggestions to the guidelines, as well as choose to ignore them if they don't like them. They're simply there for help, especially for those who maybe haven't ever participated in a discussion steeped in critical film theory. I really wish that everyone takes the opportunity to present a film, for two main, somewhat-connected reasons: 1) To get the widest variety of films possible. We're a pretty diverse group, I think, and by having each member represented both equally and individually will really let that diversity shine through, just in general and in what movies we like, and 2)To go along with #1, just so that the workload is spread evenly, and that the workload is always shifting so that the general idea of the Movie Club doesn't die easily. If Poster X is the only one presenting movies, and then one week he goes on vacation, you can see why that might raise some issues. Presenting may look a little daunting, possibly, right now, but hopefully, once all the guidelines and whatnot are hammered out and we get a few weeks under our belts, the discussions will really be flowing well, making the presenter responsible for less overall work. Ideally, once we get the system down, it will get to the point where we're all such dedicated and responsible Club members that week's presenter won't really have to do anything past the OP for the week. _____ *right now, we've kinda got an "opt-out" policy going on who presents, meaning that you're all scheduled to go unless you specifically say that you don't want to, at least for the moment.. Once we start, new Movie Club members will have to "opt-in", meaning they'll have to PM me and say that they'd like to be added to the rotation. That is because it'd be too tough to keep track of who is only participating that week and who is going to be a consistent member.

IDK if I had to PM you but yea...being a presenter aint for me , for a few reasons but mainly that I have zero faith to lead a proper discussion..not to say I couldn't but when I have tried they quickly go to hell. But I will gladly watch the weeks film and participate in the discussion though. okie dokie, no problem, man. Completely understandable. I actually really appreciate you saying so so early, especially considering your placement, alphabetically. Yeah same here, count me out as a presenter. I'm still happy to contribute to the watching and discussions though.

Ok guys. I did a good chunk of work on stuff before bed time. Collection O' F.A.N. Movie Club Google DocsOK, there is the official F.A.N. Movie Club documents folder. Right now, there are four housed there: An Archive Page, A Members Roster, A Schedule, and a F.A.Q./Guidelines/ETC page. The first three are all editable by anyone. Go ahead and add your movies to the schedule, remove yourself from the schedule, change weeks, etc. Just don't sign up for a 2nd week yet. We'll cross that bridge later. The guidelines one isn't editable by all, but I'm more than flexible on them, and, as I say in the guidelines themselves, they are more like suggestions than rules, so if you don't like them, don't follow them. I'll be poppin' in and out of this thread, I'm sure, over the next few days, but yeah, see ya'll on Sunday if not, when we start the F.A.N. Movie Club when we watch and discuss Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction"

I don't mind presenting but I don't know how good I'll be at it. Thankfully I don't go first! I already have an idea in mind but how do people feel about classic films?

How do I adjust the settings so I can see anything as everything is really hard to see. The picture below is what I'm looking at.

that's looking like possibly some software of yours(ie: Flash, Java, etc) is out of date or something. This is what you should be getting when you open it:

Okie dokie, ya'll!
Tomorrow, I'm going to make the first week's discussion thread, for the film Pulp Fiction[/i]. For all of you that are presenting at least relatively soonish, keep thinking about what movie you want as your week's movie(and once you figure it out, add it to the schedule document).
