Or at least not if you want a heel Cena to work properly.
In order to get the entire crowd against him, WWE should turn him into an obnoxious, Kurt Angle-esque goofy heel. He still has the colorful ring gear and lame jokes, but he insults the fans, targets face wrestlers and cheats. That way children and adults both have reason to hate his guts.
Now if he's turned into a take-no-prisioners, HHH-esque killer heel, then yeah, the heel turn will probably flop.
And for those of you who follow me- yes, I've pitched this idea in nearly every other thread where there's concern over heel Cena getting cheered. What can I say, I think it's a good solution. So here's its own topic.

...hell, forget saying this in other threads. I swear you've made this thread before.
That said, I still agree with you. If Cena turns heel, he needs to keep the exact same character directed at faces.

Well the thing is, the whole reason for turning Cena heel is because his current character is stale. Just going and turning him heel without changing up his character, just so all the booing makes sense, doesn't help to solve the main problem he has with a lot of the adult fans.

Well, see that's the thing- he doesn't have a problem per se with adult fans, he is their de facto villain. WWE more or less inadvertantely struck oil there, because those people going out of their way to chant Cena Sucks every night (not to mention wear anti-Cena shirts to the shows) obviously aren't bored by him.

Turning Cena heel without also freshening up his character is basically a slap in the face to all the people that have been begging for a change since 2006.

I disagree with the top post. They should turn Cena the way they turned Hogan in 96. Take him off tv as a face for a while. Let a monster dominate the roster. Then just when things look there worst Cena comes back feints being the hero and turns heel with the monster

I agree that he should be kept more or less the same. He's already annoying and obnoxious and hated.

Of course there are a few fans bored with Cena, but the ratings patterns of his segments and the consistent buzz he maintains around wrestling circles tell me that's not the majority. I think his overness, polarizing as it is, is a testament to him as a performer.
For fans that just want to see Cena be more assertive, that'd be a given. Heels, by their nature, don't turn the other cheek the way he does. However, those other "annoying" qualities Cena allegedly has now, like his smugness and corny humor, would only do him good through his heel run. A metaphorical slap in the face might be beneficial there.

so many people think turning Cena will suddenly endear him to the adult audience, which'll screw up the angle.
Think about it. Thiss is John Cena--lots of folks have been waiting for years for a real reason to boo him. They're GIVING the fans a real reason to boo him in pitting him against The Rock.

Besides, if WWE wants Punk to be their next hero, it'd do him good to have the top villain continue to be his opposite.

Just having him do what he does now but as a heel achieves nothing.
With Cena, he needs to be as exaggerated, over the top and ridiculously a corporate stooge as possible. Vince McMahon-esque suits, relentless shilling of his merchandise claiming its much cooler than the crap the fans are wearing, a shit eating grin while hanging out with Laurinaitis, and especially standing next to kids who are booing the crap out of him, while pointing to the "RISE ABOVE HATE" on his shirt.

I'd just like to point out it'd entirely be possible to freshen Cena up without turning him heel. And really, think I'd prefer that since he'd instantly eclipse a bunch of other heels I'm more fond of.

Now this would be a Cena character I could enjoy hating.

I agree. If Cena turns heel, he needs to crank his current character up to 11. He needs to make corny jokes at every chance, laugh at his own jokes, act as if the crowd is cheering him when they are really booing him. Basically, act like goofy Kurt Angle.
