I know people draw the Austin/Punk comparisons often, and it got me to thinking.
Austin was an anti-hero, but at the end of the day we knew he stood for the right thing. The night where he saved Steph from Taker and the Ministry, for instance, was a perfect example of the fact that despite his penchant for being anti-authority, Austin had a moral compass.
With Punk, we just know that he's a smarmy ass that beats up heels now instead of faces. Does he need some sort of "noble" moment to bring some of the Cena fans his way? Just a thought.

Well... He's already straight edge. That's pretty moral, right?

I think he already has a lot of the 'Cena fans' as you say. Durring the TLC Triple Threat at one point I heard a much more child involved 'C.M Punk!' chant.
In today's WWE, his 'Saving Stephanie' moment would be sticking up for Hornswoggle when the midget has a match with Jinder Mahal.

It wouldn't fit.
Punk's the kind of guy (at least in kayfabe) who would tease doing the right thing, then wink to the camera, give the "OK" sign, and blow it off because it's too corny for him.

Well... He's already straight edge. That's pretty moral, right? No, not really. Just because you don't drink doesn't make you a morally upright person. A charitable alcoholic is not morally inferior to a genocidal teatotaler. I smoke a cigar once every several months. I'm not automatically morally inferior to a straight-edger just because of that, am I? What Punk needs to do is to stand up for a good guy, especially begrudgingly. Point out he's not doing it to be a goody two-shoes, but that he's doing it because it's a stand that someone has to take, and whether people will like him for it or not, he had to be the guy to make that stand.

As long as it doesn't involve Steph herself, I'd be cool with it.

Truthfully, Punk has pretty much been all about himself for his entire career, even through the indies.
He's got a code, like Omar used to say, but he's all about #1 at the end of the day.

Well... He's already straight edge. That's pretty moral, right? not necessarily. It's kind of self centered actually. He's straight edge because it's good for him.

Exactly, and in a way that's us. cause chivalry is in fact dead and we are all smarmy assholes. At least I am. True story. So if this were to happen I would be the guy sitting there going really? They really just broke his character to save kelly kelly? Why would Punk give a shit?

When Austin did it, he didn't "need" that moment. He was already a mega-star.
NO ONE has been that big of a star since, not even Cena.
Punk is pretty much the top guy in WWE right now. He is champion, and everywhere he goes people chant his name, and even at non-WWE shows you see lots of people in the crowd wearing his t-shirt. What else does he "need" ? He's there.

I miss some episodes here and there, but I don't really remember the last time Punk mentioned being straightedge. Seems like it's been a while.

He's still not at that Austin/HHH level where you just can't buy him ever losing unless there's a screwjob finish, though (IMO, that's a good thing. Others will disagree).

I think it'd be awesome if the writers were able to conjure a scenario in which he had to save someone like Vince or Steph. Maybe Jericho? Punks got plenty of time to mold his current characterization. And my favorite moment of Austin saving Steph? He didn't hug back. Even as a kid, I knew Austin was brilliant cause he kept true to his character. Few do that these days.

Smarmy assholes are great at fighting authority figures, but do they do real good? Do people like to have untrustworthy asshats as their friends or as their bosses?

Do people like to have untrustworthy asshats as their friends or as their bosses? No, because that would make them the sidekick, and not the star. They want to live through the smarmy asshole, to have the untrustworthy asshat represent _them_, not their friend.

They want to live through the smarmy asshole, to have the untrustworthy asshat represent _them_, not their friend. It's definitely vicarious, but eventually, when the smarmy asshole rips on something--someone, or anything--that they like, they'll want the guy drawn and quartered in the middle of the ring. So to give him some humanity and show "He's not ALL bad, people!" will curb that.
