I grew up in Commack, in Suffolk County, and it drives my wife and I crazy when people like Mick Foley and Zack Ryder are introduced as being from "Long Island." It's not one monolithic place, where Foley is from (Setauket) and Ryder (Baldwin, I think) are totally different and far apart. It'd be like CM Punk being introduced from "Cook County" or "Illinois." Is it that hard to give an actual town? Rant over.

Setauket NY and Baldwin NY sound way more boring than LI.
Ever been upstate? I grew up in Smithtown and some of the people up there treat it like it's hollywood or something and are astounded when they hear you are from there.
Then again Hacksaw always got billed directly from Glen Falls, NY so...
Alright I guess you have a point!

Most people I know from Long Island usually answer, "Long Island," when asked where they're from. Same as people from Upstate will say, "Upstate," unless they're from like, Albany.
Chances are more people are aware of Chicago vs "From Riverhead, New York" or "From the Ronkonkoma Line of the LIRR..."

People from the suburbs near Chicago usually just simplify things to "Chicago" when talking to people out of state.
It's the same concept.
When you are on a global scale like WWE, it only makes sense.

When folks ask me where I'm from in New York, I say, "I'm an Island Boy!" with pride!

I know too many Long Islanders who will just say they're from New York, which generally implies that you're from the five boroughs. As a native Brooklynite, I take issue with this. (Yes, YOU PEOPLE are from New York state)

But as a former Chicagoan myself, they will ultimately say they're from Chicago. "So where you from?" "Rolling Meadows" "Where's that?" "Basically Chicago" "No it's not!"

I don't actually live there, I live in a suburb of it but I always just say I live there when asked.

I have family friends who live in Florida from Baldwin, But when you ask them where they're from, they'll flat out say "We were born and raised in Long Island".
I also have to agree with notyourangel about Atlatna, I used to live in Peachtree City, but it's much easier to tell people I lived in Atlanta because nobody outside of that area know where Peachtree City is.

I usually say I'm from Long Island to people not familiar with the area, as I do most people that are from Nassau or Suffolk County. For people that aren't even aware of Long Island I just say New York When folks ask me where I'm from in New York, I say, "I'm an Island Boy!" with pride! I know too many Long Islanders who will just say they're from New York, which generally implies that you're from the five boroughs. As a native Brooklynite, I take issue with this. (Yes, YOU PEOPLE are from New York state) And as a native Brooklynite you are also from Long Island, Geologically speaking :-P

I kinda understand why it might frustrate you, but the only reason people do it is because obscure town names mean nothing to people out-of-state or on the internet. I grew up only about 25 miles from the downtown area, so I really don't think I'm that out of line considering myself a Chicagoan when talking to "foreigners". Obviously though, if I met you in Chicago (proper), I would tell you which town I'm from.

The mentality to most here is there are 3 parts to NY. Upstate, NYC, and Long Island.
Just noticed there are a lot of people from Long Island on this board...
