A visual feast, but that's about it for me. It's aged awfully.

I don't know what happened with the SNES version, but how could it be so great while the Genesis version sucked so badly? The SNES version was developed by Konami while the Genesis version was developed by Sega themselves. They were two completely different games.

The '89 film was a Batman movie that happened to have been directed by Tim Burton. Returns was a Tim Burton movie that happened to have Batman in it.
For me, that's no problem, because Tim Burton is one of my favorite directors (ignoring the fact that his two most recent movies have sucked on ice). But for a lot of people to whom Burton's style doesn't have special appeal, I can understand why they were turned off by Returns.

I have more fun watching this than Dark Knight Rises to be honest. I didn't care for that one at all. Returns at least has some interesting villains (minus Max Schreck). Penguin was more entertaining than Bane and Catwoman in this movie is also more fun to watch than the new one.
And yes...the SNES game is great. One of the best beat 'em ups of the 90's for home consoles.

I'm not that much of a Tim Burton mark and this flick was much more about Tim Burton than Batman. I was disappointed, but not Batman and Robin disappointed.

Next to Batman and Robin, Returns is the worst Batman movie ever made. It was just a typical Tim Burton movie with SOME Batman.

This one has aged very badly, IMO. For some reason, I actually find myself enjoying Batman Forever just a bit more than Batman Returns. The plot is nonsensical and it doesn't feel like a Batman movie at all (as was described here, it's more of a Tim Burton movie that just so happens to have Batman characters in it). There are some positives, at least...with Michelle Pfeiffer as Selina Kyle/Catwoman being a big positive. It's not a bad movie, per se, just a weird one that leaves me scratching my head at times. The Nolan trilogy blows this one away by a long shot.
This is basically the result of what happens when you give Tim Burton pretty much complete control of the direction of a movie. He didn't have the same control with Batman (1989), and that turned out to be excellent (some people don't feel the same way, though).

I think that if you love this movie like I do, there's a good chance that you saw it in the theater like I did. If you saw it as a kid, this is the type of film that reached out of the screen and shook you, and created the kind of memories that going to the movies are all about. It's the same reason films like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze are classics to me.
Now that I got the heavy personal bias out of the way, I still think this is a pretty good film from a more honest, critical standpoint. It is often criticized for heavily featuring Christopher Walken as Max Schreck because he is "boring" and not a comic book villain. First of all, to me Walken's performance is anything but boring and he made a chilling, ruthless villain. Second, comics featuring heroes who fight crime at the street level always involve normal human criminals like Shreck. He was also necessary to the plot because he provided the link between the three super characters. It also gave the movie a true evil villain who couldn't be sympathized with in any way like Penguin and Catwoman could. I think it helped the dramatic effect of Penguin and Catwoman's stories to have him there for character contrast. I rank it as the second best Batman film after Batman (1989).

The thing I remember most about this film was how there were parents who thought this movie should have been rated R. Even Roger Ebert mentioned it in his review IIRC.
EDIT: I remember two things. The McDonalds promotion with the film which was pretty excessive.

Plot makes no sense, Catwoman is overrated, Walken's the only good thing in the movie. Nostalgia is this movie's greatest ally.

I think Returns is more of a Batman movie than the original Batman, because at least the focus is still on him and working around him. The '89 movie is a Joker movie, that happens to have Batman in it.

Hated this movie in the theaters as a kid. Hated it even more as an adult. I'd honestly rather watch Batman Forever or B&R. Both are worse movies, but I can enjoy making fun of them. Returns just sucks.

I'm probably gonna be sorry I asked this question, but what about the plot doesn't make sense to people? Bearing in mind that I'm asking in terms of comic book logic...

I'm not saying it's a masterpiece, but I tend to agree with this. It's no more contrived than the plot of the first movie. In fact, outside of being "darker", I'd say the first and second movies have more similarities than differences.

I think I hated this more than Batman & Robin. The whole film is gives off a creepy vibe, the way Penguin died was disturbing, Catwoman was very annoying, and the remote controlled Batarang might be the dumbest thing in any Batman movie besides the 1960's movie.

I'm probably gonna be sorry I asked this question, but what about the plot doesn't make sense to people? Bearing in mind that I'm asking in terms of comic book logic... Don't be sorry. Just consider the following: Ever notice that Schreck's power plant plotline went nowhere? What was Penguin's character arc? The script changes gears with nearly every scene. One scene he is a freak struggling with acceptance, the next no one has a problem with him, and the next we're back to his struggle for acceptance. Why in the world would a tycoon (Schreck) deal with some freak (the Penguin) by helping him run for Mayor? What if he won? Now he wields executive power over the city and still has dirt on you. What's the point of Catwoman? How does she become empowered by cat resurrection? Penguin is just a freak and Joker simply became one - neither suddenly become more powerful due to their origins. She is supernatural in a setting that never established such. I think there's more, but that's off the top of my head.
