you guys have way more commitment than me watching that many movies, but I am super excited for October to arrive nonetheless. got my blurays of Ginger Snaps and April Fool's Day (1986) in the mail this week, but waiting for horror month to begin to watch them
Usually just do my best to watch a combo of classics I love or ones I haven't seen in forever whenever I have a chance

I pick a theme for every October. Last year’s theme was creature features and this year will focus on ‘70s horror, which I’ll be watching and reviewing right here on FAN!

rather than making a separate thread, figured this belong here.
anyone wanna throw their suggestions for their favorite episodes of Tales From The Crypt? It's been a long time since I've watched it, but I've got all the seaons on DVD
I'm a huge William Sadler mark, so an obvious one for me is "The Man Who Was Death" with him as a vigilante executioner

Since my exploitation thread is dead I thought I’d mention what could only be described as a movie segment thought of while the creators were WAY whacked out on drugs that has horror elements. You know like Blood Freak. The movie is The Head Mistress (1968) which is not a horror movie. The plot centers on a 17th century all girls school run by a lesbian head mistress who takes advantage of her students. The whacked out scene is when the mistress is describing to one of her pupils why she became a lesbian. It involves an on-camera beheading, rape, a man’s skull being raised as a house plant, and that house plant then taking revenge on some killers/rapists. It REALLY comes out of left field. Highly recommended if you don’t mind some unsexy sweaty sixties softcore mixed in with your horror

After watching almost nothing but 1960s and 1970s schlock I decided to cleanse my palette last night with Friday the 13th Part VI. It may seem odd to think of it as a palette cleanser but compared to what I’ve been watching it is a fairly high budget film, made competently, and has the Hollywood production values that go with all that. Plus, it’s my second favorite in the series! Right after that though I went straight back to the low budget schlock with Horrors of Spider Island. It’s been at least 15 years since I last saw it and even that was the MST3K version. This time around I watched the Something Weird DVD version which is a decent print presented in the original aspect ratio. Compared to some other Something Weird offerings I’ve watched lately it’s very good as it has a coherent plot, keeps the unsexy eroticism to a minimum, and has a solid horror focus. From what I’ve read some European cuts of the film had topless scenes, but none in here which is odd since it is Something Weird. Needless topless scenes is like their thing. Next up I’m going to finish my DVD set of The Drak Pack. It’s typical 1980’s Hanna-Barbera zaniness with a classic horror exterior. For the last few days of September I’ll probably just dive into some more exploitation stuff before getting into nothing but horror for October

Although I do love me some Severin too

After a particularly poor showing on the weekly "Final Exam" Horror trivia (this week was 40 questions on Canadian based Horror), I decided to try out a film I where I missed the answer.
Thus I watched THE VOID (2016) and I have no review because I have no real way of explaining what I saw.
Take that however you want.

50 states horror project: Nebraska
KOLOBOS (1998) comes to us from co-directors Daniel Liatowitsch and David Todd Ocvirk, from a script they wrote alongside Nne Ebong.
Following a credits sequence featuring music as close to Goblin's SUSPIRIA theme as "Ice Ice Baby" is to "Under Pressure", we see a disoriented woman wander the streets at night, covered in blood. She's picked up and taken to a hospital. Everything is shown from her POV at this point, so we don't see what has happened to her, but the doctors mention she's covered in scars. The only word the woman utters before going under and receiving treatment is "Kolobos".
We flashback to a time prior to the scarification, as this woman is one of 5 people who answered an ad looking for audition tapes for an experimental film: there's a raunchy tomboy, an unfunny standup comedian, a former slasher movie actress looking to get into more "serious" acting gigs, a pretentious film student, and an introverted artist with a history of mental illness (Amy Weber, who would go on to a brief but memorable stint as a WWE Diva).
The artist is named Kyra, she's our main character, and she's the only character who's remotely sympathetic. Everyone else is obnoxious in one way or another. At any rate, these five people are gathered to a lovely house where they meet with their director. The project is basically a take off of MTV's The Real World, as our castmembers are expected to get to know each other, love or hate each other as they see fit, and deal with their drama with one another in front of various cameras stationed throughout the house. The director takes his leave of the group, but the actress among them, Erica, pulls him aside for a one-on-one conversation, hinted they have some sort of relationship from prior to the auditions.
Our five would-be reality movie stars get to know each other a bit, quickly alienating Kyra when they find out she's had mental problems. She goes up to her room to be alone, and the other four settle into the living room to watch Erica's terrible slasher franchise, Slaughterhouse Factor (Parts 1-6). Our tomboy heads to the kitchen for a snack, and THAT'S where everything goes off-kilter!
A previously unknown trap is set off in the kitchen, slicing the hell out of the poor girl. Shortly after the other four housemates find her, all the doors and windows of the house are sealed shut! The group then finds their supposed director, bleeding to death while taped to the ceiling of a bedroom. At this point, Erica reveals that "the director" was just another actor, and there is a mysterious benefactor behind this whole set-up! The housemates now have to determine who or what else is part of this death trap and what their goal is. Making things even trickier for us in the audience, since Kyra is our viewpoint character, we have to call into question whether what we're seeing on screen is what actually happened or if she's an unreliable narrator!
KOLOBOS was made and released during the post-SCREAM wave of slashers, and while it does feature a juxtaposition of "bad horror" (the Slaughterhouse Factor flicks on TV) with "good horror" (the grisly death in the kitchen), for the most part this film plays things pretty straight. There doesn't seem to be any tongues in any cheeks when this film does an homage to something, which it does on a number of occasions. In addition to the blatant Goblin-swipe for the main title theme, once the mayhem begins the house's lighting switches from naturalistic to the bold blue and red hues typical of Argento's magnum opus. There's also a reference to Robert Rodriguez's book "Rebel Without A Crew" and an eye-gouging scene ripped from Lucio Fulci's playbook.
Aside from the homages, how "good" is KOLOBOS, though? As mentioned, most of our characters are fairly obnoxious, though that may have been the point. Weber has likability in the lead role and carries herself well, at least. The gory set-pieces are well put together, the score falls into that eerie late 70s progressive vibe.
I did a bit of research after watching this film, and it turns out the initial story about the house and the filming was made, when they were finished what they had was under feature length. So they came up with the wraparound about Kyra in the hospital and filmed that stuff to pad out. Which is not great, because the main narrative is doing a nice job building tension before cutting back to the present in the hospital and deflating that. (Incidentally, the end credits list a "Los Angeles Unit" meaning some portion of the film was shot there, but I can't find any information specifically. I assume it's this wraparound stuff shot in LA, with the bulk of the flick shot in Nebraska.)
Attempts at scariness tend to fall flat, but I enjoyed the mood of the film and the fantasy-reality blending aspects. And the elaborate death-trap set-up predates SAW by a few years, so that's neat. KOLOBOS isn't the pinnacle of horror, but I had a good time with it.

Anyone else completely underwhelmed by the announced horror offerings for October for most streaming services? I use three services and at least Amazon Prime looks like it kind of, sort of, not really tried to get some good horror stuff for October. Netflix and Hulu? Their horror October offerings suck ass! If I wasn’t such a cheapskate I’d finally pull the trigger on getting a Shudder subscription. As it is I am a cheapskate and a cheapskate with a huge amount of physical media I have to get through. So I’m good

I mostly use it to watch the broadcast network shows I enjoy. Which haven't had new episodes since May.
