I'm exhausted. I need to give this project a lil' break! I'll try to go in-detail about the movies after I've seen all of 'em. So far, how I'd rank these films myself... 1. Friday the 13th Part III (1982) 2. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984) 3. Friday the 13th Part II (1981) 4. Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986) 5. Friday the 13th (1980) 6. Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989) 7. Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985) 8. Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)

Tales from the Crypt (1972)* *Tubi* A very good early anthology movie (of course) based off the comic strips. Five individual stories of five people stuck in a crypt (while on a tour) learning of how they will die. All the stories are good but my favourite was the third one with Peter Cushing. He’ll always be Grand Moff Tarkin to me but it was great to see him in an entirely different role. Not gory. Or particularly scary. Just...good. One of my favorites. Have you seen any of the other Amicus anthologies? Vault of Horror was made right after this and is of similar quality. Also, it’s not technically Amicus, but The Monster Club from 1981 features a lot of the same cast and crew as those films. It’s super campy and features Vincent Price in the only time he ever played a vampire. Plus, the theme song is super catchy. It’s been free on Amazon Prime recently I have not. Asylum is on Tubi though

I haven't seen these in a while, starting watching 'em in a hour or two! Along with (Ash vs.) Evil Dead, an all-time favourite film series!

Victor Crowley* *DVD* The comedy of this one was amped up even more but I think it was one of the best in the series, albeit totally different. I really liked all the characters in this. And the gore was stupidly over-the-top.

The Brainiac* *DVD* This movie was pretty f***ing cool, especially for its time. The beginning was really f***ing dark for 1962 and it’s too bad they didn’t run with that. But then it gets gloriously weird and cheesy. And the “monster” plays a lot bigger a role than they usually did in that era. It’s not gory, or scary, but it was cool.

The Toxic Avenger* *blu ray* So stupid. So, so stupid. And thus so awesome! Seriously I laughed out loud more than once watching this. 96% of what happens in it wouldn’t fly today but it all worked. The practical effects and gore were great.

Just finished watching DEAD ANT (2017) in which an aging hair metal band treks through the desert on the way to perform at a small-time music festival (No-chella, for bands that aren't popular enough to play Coachella). They take a detour to score some magical peyote from a Native American man, who warns them that if they harm any of God's creatures while on the stuff, they will suffer the consequences. Sure enough, the bass player (Sean Astin, ENCINO MAN) drowns an ant while taking a piss and brings down the wrath of gigantic murderous ants!
Also features Jake Busey (STARSHIP TROOPERS) as a bandmate and Tom Arnold (THE STUPIDS) as the band's manager.
DEAD ANT is considered a horror comedy. The ants are some of the least convincing CGI I've seen since the 90s. The jokes amount to somebody forgetting about tension for a second to say something incongruous ("HE'S BLEEDING BAD, WE HAVE TO STOP THE BLOOD! Man, do we have to use this t-shirt, it's a collectors item?!"). So it's neither all that scary OR all that funny. There is a fairly entertaining song about sideboob, though.
Meh.

50 States Horror Project: Ohio
THE DEAD NEXT DOOR (1989) comes to us from Akron's native son, writer-producer-director-editor-actor-musician J.R. Bookwalter, with some uncredited executive production help from Sam Raimi (THE EVIL DEAD).
The film begins in the present day (1989), when a failed experiment results in zombies quickly spreading across the entire town of Akron! The bulk of the film's plot is set five years into the future, where the zombie infestation has spread across the country (we're treated to a brief montage of zombies clawing at the gates outside The White House!) and a black ops team dubbed the Zombie Squad is tasked with heading to Akron, trying to find the formula that inadvertently created the zombies in the first place, and, with the help of a doctor in a trucker cap, creating a serum that will stop the undead once and for all.
There's an unforeseen wrinkle in the Zombie Squad's plans: a bizarre cult has formed in Akron who believe that the zombies are the Will of God, sent to punish mankind for our horrible sins! They generally try to corral the living dead and use them like attack dogs on anyone who doesn't see things their way. Like, for instance, a certain Squad...
THE DEAD NEXT DOOR was made over the course of four years for about $125,000; the budget seems to have been devoted almost entirely to gore effects. The movie was shot on Super 8 film, which was primarily used for home movies at the time. Actors are largely amateurs, who either go over the top or deliver their lines flatly. The gore is this film's bread and butter. Zombies tear apart numerous human victims and are then shot at and cut up by elite military folks.
It's this film's copious amounts of splatter and its connections to Sam Raimi that led to it generating buzz among horror fans back in the day. Raimi's fingerprints are all over this flick. The lead Zombie Squadder is named Raimi and his actor is overdubbed by frequent Raimi collaborator Bruce Campbell! We also get footage from THE EVIL DEAD showing on a TV screen at a Zombie Squad facility. There are references to other zombie films (other characters have names like Savini and Romero, an early scene of zombies attacking a video store clerk involves a stack of zombie VHS tapes on the counter), but most of the nods in the movie are in the direction of Raimi's involvement.
The plot and characterization aren't particularly noteworthy. Most characters don't have much personality outside of what they do for a living. The flick's attempts at levity seem to end at the aforementioned references to horror luminaries, though you may get a chuckle out of all the mullets and flannel shirts on civilian cast members. The plot and characters are largely in the service of the gore set-pieces. I would have enjoyed a teensy bit more characterization than what we got, but I still thought the flick had some charm to it.

The Last House on Massacre Street/the Bride/the House that Screamed Murder* *Tubi* I got roped into this one by (one of) it’s titles and it’s similarities to one of my favourite movies (the Last House on Dead End Street). But the similarities ended there. This was just some lousy American giallo movie. The last ten minutes was decent but the only violence was against a chicken. f*** that.

What does everyone think of the Waxwork movies? I re-watched the first one for the first time in years and years. It had been so long since I’d seen it I wasn’t even sure I had watched it before. But that steak tartare scene jump started my memory. The whole first movie is a little more polished than I’d like it be. Prior to 1990 and even somewhat after I believe it was pretty rare for a big studio to throw $3 million behind an R Rated horror movie. Even things like the original Halloween and Friday the 13th movies were made with far less resources and from the stories of their making they sound almost like indie shoots with little studio support or interference. But it’s a fun movie filled with some 1980’s goodness. It’s rated 6.2 on IMDB which sounds about right to me. The second though. Yikes! What a mess. I actually tried last week to watch it and gave up after 30 minutes because it just seemed like a bunch of non-sense. But I NEVER give up on watching a movie. So yesterday with a clearer head I sat down and watched the whole thing through. And it was just as much non-sense. Inexcusably enough the movie had the same director, Anthony Hickox and leading man, Zach Galligan. The leading woman, Deborah Foreman refused to take part because her and Galligan had a messy break-up in real life. Even without Foreman though it should have been much better than what it was. The first movie pays homage to some classic horror movies and tales. This one does that a tiny bit, but more often it spoofs, at the time, recent movies with some pretty bland comedy. It knocks off things like Jason’s hockey mask, the xenomorphs from Alien, and Godzilla just enough so they can claim parody. The whole thing comes off as a proto-Friedberg and Seltzer movie which is exactly as bad as it sounds. It’s a head scratcher as the movie still had enough studio support and budget to create something far better. This is evident in the production values, but also the best thing about the movie, the cameos. Things like Bruce Campbell referencing Monty Python and David Carradine showing up for a few minutes as a beggar are fun, but not enough to make up for this overly long and directionless mess. IMDB gives it a 5.5, but I’d rank it lower. Probably a 4 or less.

Waxworks is a great film. THe sequel is a fun film. THe whole time travel aspect of the sequel makes it just fun as hell to see who will pop up in the next segment.

Zombie Nightmare* *Tubi* I can’t even ironically joke about this movie being awesome, it’s f***ing horrible. Jon Mikael Thor’s role is shit. I can’t believe him as a zombie because I can’t believe anything being able to kill him in the first place. Adam West clearly wanted to be anywhere other than in this movie but by the mid-1980’s this is where his career had taken him. Tia Carerra is hot but never gets naked enough (a common problem that plagued her career). There’s no gore, barely any zombies and it sucks.

Asylum is on Tubi though Asylum is fun.Saw it years ago as a kid when a buddy rented it. Hit good lick selling stuff at my gimmick table at the BIW event last weekend,so went Blu Ray shopping. The DVD was found while waiting in line at the local Dollar General. Slumber Party Massacre Scream Factory BLu Ray-Appears to port over all teh extras from the DVD and has a new transfer of the film. Night Killer Severin Blu Ray-This film is known as Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 in various parts of Europe. Made by Claudio "Troll 2" Fraggasso and additional gore footage shot by Bruno Mattei. It is a odd slasher/giallo film. Once Upon a Time in Deadwood DVD-Stars that guy Robert Bronski that looks just like Charles Bronson. I watched 30 minutes of it last night. Ok western. Appears to have been filmed in North Cali. Night Killer is in full on Youtube. Just search it's Italian release title, which is listed on Night Killer's wiki page.

131. Cryptic Plasm* *DVD* This moved a lot slower than I expected but when it finally got around to the meat of the movie it was worth it. The first hour or so was just two colleagues filming a reality show of mysterious locations and occurrences. When they get caught up in an exorcism gone wrong the producers decide to eliminate them out of fear of it ruining their production company. But then an amalgamation apparition of all the strange things the two friends experienced leading up to then appears to make sure it’s existence remains a mystery. I think. The gore is over-the-top, excessive and nasty. And the plot line of the two friends going through all the mysterious stuff is genuinely scary. But the two halves of the movie should have intertwined more. The acting, sound editing, video quality and pretty much everything is absolutely horrendous but you can’t deny the amount of love that was put into this and respect that. Especially since it was pretty much all done by one guy (who also starred in it). I really liked it.

Ogroff (aka Mad Mutilator)* *DVD* There is so much f***ed up stuff happening in this movie that I don’t even know what to say. I guess when within the first five minutes of a movie a girl is running from the killer that just slaughtered her husband and toddler hails a car down only for a clown to get out and tell her that running is good for her then speeds off you know what you’re in for. Then it gets really weird in the second half. Seek this out and pay whoever’s selling it whatever they’re asking.

Atroz* *DVD* I’m not 100% what I watched here. I think it was a semi-POV/documentary of a Mexican detective falling father down a hole of found-footage debacary? It was definitely a hard watch in parts. But I’ve seen worse.
