Good friend of mine does the theme thing each October. Last 2 years by the time October was almost over he was tired of whatever theme he was watching. Like last year was Hammer films. This year I think his theme is Horror comedies. Use to be I would just pick out a film each morning when I woke up and that was that days film. But the last 5 years I changed it to picking out most of the films earlier in the year. That way I can make sure I have access to a decent copy. Over the last 2 nights I've been working my way thru the Criterion Blu Ray release of NOTLD68. It looks so clear and crisp. And sounds better than I have ever heard it sound. The two commentary tracks are decent. The extras so far are ok. Nothing amazing. Was hoping Billy Gram's "One More for the Fire" documentary would be on this release. That is the best NOTLD68 documentary I have ever seen. I have a lot of movies to begin with, so when I come up with a theme I usually pick out the stuff I already have that fits the theme and then buy a handful of new titles that work, too. If I run through all of those movies (I usually go way over 31 movies for the month) I'll decide, if I'm still into this theme, I'll pick up a couple more movies. Otherwise I'll jump to something else. Or like if something in the theme reminds me of something else outside of that theme, I'll find that other movie and watch it. I'm also willing to take breaks from a given theme if I need a palette cleanser. I'm very lenient on myself with themes. *shrug* Sounds intriguing. Who's the wrestler? Charlie Kruel is her ring name. Last year discovered Akira,Indiana deathmatch guy,on a ICW NHB event. We interviewed him for the podcast. He told us "Yall need to watch some of my wife's matches." So I did. She is pretty good. www.amazon.com/Charlie-Kruel-Escape-VHS-Hell/dp/1696800072/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=charlie+kruel&qid=1632363490&sr=8-2THere is the book. It's pretty thin. I bought it over a month ago, when CHarlie was suppose to be working the Battlezone Southern Belle tournament. Then cause MS's covid numbers kept going up BZ changed the Southern Belle into a smaller event. Plus CHarlie is currently dealing with some mental health issues. Hoping she is better soon.

I wish her all the best.

Last night when I couldn't sleep I saw that "One for the Fire" a NOTLD68 documentary made by former manager in CZW Billy Gram was on Youtube. Watched it and enjoyed the hell out of it.
Then after lunch today, after we got some bad news,I knew my father needed a distraction. He mentioned how a few days ago he watched "All the Jaws movies on Netflix. They added all 3 movies." Looked and yep they have Jaws the Revenge. He swears he has never seen it. But I know he saw it years ago when we rented it.
Jaws the Revenge is so bad. But also still entertaining. The shark in the film looks bad. The acting is bad. Then that ending LOL.
I think Friday to continue the shark theme Dad and I are gonna watch Deep Blue Sea and if I can find my DVD of it Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus.

Although not purely horror I’m in a re-watch of the 1980’s Twilight Zone. Anyone have any favorite segments/memories from that show?
I’m not sure what I’ll do for horror movies this year. Usually I try to do the at least 31 movies thing. But lately, I’ve kind of filled my horror quota with horror TV shows.
Even with the TV shows I’ve kind of stalled. The 1980’s Twilight Zone had a bunch of good episodes, but A Message For Charity and Paladin of the Lost Hour is a one, two punch that’s tough to kick out of.
A Message For Charity isn’t too bad on the first view, but rewatching it, it’s just so slow. Paladin of the Lost Hour is even worse! It’s just slow, meandering sappy bullshit. Maybe the Harlan Ellison story it’s based on is good. I have no idea. But the segment is directed by Alan Smithee so right out the gate you know not to get your hopes up.

There is a 80s TZ episode based on the Richard Matheson short story The Button. Which is so much better than the feature length film based on the same story.
For a bit I was recording the 80s TZ episodes off MeTV. I need to see if they are still airing it.

For a bit I was recording the 80s TZ episodes off MeTV. I need to see if they are still airing it. That’s probably my favorite episode of 1980’s series For these types of anthologies and perhaps in general I’m more drawn to unique premises than things with heavy character development. Since the 1980’s episodes were an hour long and featured multiple segments it worked great at this. They could give an interesting premise, tell it in 15 minutes or less, then move the hell on to the next story. Much better than having another 10 minutes of unnecessary filler to pad out he runtime. Along this line another two segments I really like are Examination Day and A Small Talent for War. I had no idea Button was made into a feature film. A 2009 movie starring Cameron Diaz. Doesn’t sound that appealing. The acting in the TZ segment is a little cartoonish, but it’s a great episode, in part due to it being concise. Stretching it out just seems unnecessary.

I finished watching the 5 episode UK anthology Chiller. It’s on IMDB TV free with ads if you have Amazon Prime. It isn’t very good. Starting my October horror movie marathon a little early next with some SOV horror again courtesy of Amazon Prime

Black River Monster only has a whopping 37 votes on IMDB and no reviews. One of the only critic reviews of it on the Internet is from forum member Dan Lashley. Small world. I really enjoy no budget SOV horror. I wish more SOV horror was easily available. Some of the special edition DVDs that have them cost about what I’d imagine it cost to produce them. I’m thinking of doing the 7 day free Shudder trial later in October. If nothing else I can finally watch Things (1989).

If you do the free trial watch the airing of Things hosted by Joe Bob Briggs.

Cool to hear about some stuff available on Tubi Black River Monster (1986) This was a lot of fun. Technically I don’t think you can even call it a movie because it only runs 49 minutes. It’s very family friendly and looks like something a public access channel or Nickelodeon might put on in the 1980s. It’s about a newly hired farmhand named Leroy, some mischievous thieves, and the mysterious titular Black River Monster. The production is completely no budget being filmed by Camelot Studios in Michigan. The extras aren’t even actors and were just signed up for camp that year. As can be expected the monster looks even worse than what appears on the VHS cover. It’s bloodless, but fun. The Hackers (1988) Every once in a while a film comes along that makes you ask, “Why does this exist?” This is one such film. After Black River Monster, this is the second and last film directed by John Duncan. It’s like he got hit in the head, had vague memories of watching Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, then decided to make his own SOV version of it. From the very opening when a hitchhiker gets his thumb cut off and bleeds excessively, it’s obvious that this is going to be a very different kind of movie. Black River Monster made sense as it could be cheap filler programming on a family channel. With The Hackers it’s like it exist purely to be watched ironically several decades later. It’s just that awesome. Both films are highly recommended. Despite no budget, the movies actually have fairly standard plots and are easy to follow. It’s kind of pleasant in an even lower budget Roger Corman kind of way. You don’t have to study these films or dig for deeper meaning. Just shut off your brain and enjoy. Oddly enough Camelot Studios who made both movies still exist and have a website, CamelotStudios.net Both films are proudly mentioned on the website. Camelot Studios appears to still be an active production company that makes industrial shorts and things of that nature. The contact person on there is Dave, who I presume is Dave Duncan, the guy who served as the technical director on both of these.

Just saw that home video company KINO is starting up a Free Streaming service on Oct 1st. Appears it is only for people in the States. Kino Cult is the name of it. And they listed it will be on Roku,Amazon Fire and most other devices.
Of course it will have ads. But if it is like Tubi or PlutoTV that won't be bad.

If anyone plans on making any Blu-ray/DVD purchases this October I have two suggestions.
First, the Arrow Blu-ray box set of Herschell Gordon Lewis films is selling for under $50 on Amazon. I’ve never seen it sell for that cheap. I bought it when it was selling for some multiple of that, so if you don’t have it, now is the time to snag it!
Second, Shock ‘Em Dead starring Traci Lords on Blu-ray is selling on Amazon for $22.98. Not that cheap, but it is out of print. A third party seller is selling it on Amazon. I had to pick up a copy as I can’t imagine it going for that price for long. On eBay it currently sells for $60+.

With October now officially upon us, my month-long horror-thon has already begun.
THE MONSTER AND THE GIRL (1940) features a man on trial for a murder he did not commit. After he's found guilty, he swears that, somehow some way, the conspirators who framed him will way be punished! As he awaits execution, the young man agrees to donate his brain to a scientific experiment. The doctor performing said experiment is played by George Zucco, of THE MAD GHOUL. The result of the experiment is the man's revenge-fueled brain implanted into the body of a massive gorilla!
The premise of the film is kinda ridiculous, but it works fairly well anyway. It plays out like a noir crime thriller that becomes a monster movie midway through. Sometimes I enjoy that type of thing. The film has strong performances from its actors, the gorilla suit is fairly convincing, and the film is briskly paced (only a few minutes over an hour). A solid picture all around!
I followed that up with...
ANTHONY SHAFFER'S THE WICKER MAN (1973) (that's how it's shown on the title screen), the iconic film in which a staunchly Christian police officer (Edward Woodward) investigates the disappearance of a young girl on Summerisle, an island off the coast of Scotland. The people living on the island frequently infuriate the policeman with their hedonistic pagan lifestyle. But perhaps more importantly, they confound him with ambiguous answers to his questions. It seems everyone from the lowliest townsfolk to Lord Summerisle himself (the legendary Christopher Lee) is hiding something from the detective, but what?
There's no gore or monsters in the traditional sense here, the horror lies in the conspiratorial nature of the people of Summerisle and just where it all could possibly lead. There's also just a slightly unsettling tone to the frequent musical numbers that sprinkle throughout the film, as the pagans use songs in many of their rituals. The film is gorgeous and features some really fun acting performances from top to bottom. You won't necessarily jump out of your seat in fright, but it will leave you feeling perturbed.

Digging into my physical media again I’m about to watch a Michael/Roberta Findlay double feature from Something Weird Video. This made me go on a Findlay rabbit hole. When looking up Banned (1989) I found that Media Blasters (the parent company of Shriek Show) is BACK! Technically Media Blasters never went away, but they were pretty dormant on all things horror for a while. Now they are releasing pressed copies of things on Blu-ray, including some movies they never distributed before. Although I don’t know how long they will keep selling new stuff. They posted an update that essentially says “Don’t buy our DVDs”* *Source: media-blasters.com/2021-media-blasters-to-move-away-from-dvd-on-demand/
