1. Brain Damage
Current #1 despite being Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue levels of Anvilicious. Aylmer is best brain-eating symbiote. Or maybe worst? His five minute breakdown of Brian is diabolical. Favorite setups, favorite gore gags...
{Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW} Favorite villain song?! I do wish Henenlotter hadn't had chosen to have Brian's girlfriend get with his brother; came off as cheap and not having it would have made the decision to off her for the drug rush that much more devastating. 2. Frankenhooker
Absolute romp and remarkably gore-free relative to the premise. It's weird; right now Brain Damage is my favorite but I think this is the perfect Henenlotter film. The leads are hysterical and I wish Patty Mullen had more parts *groan*.
3. The Basketcase Trilogy
I'm, uhhh. Not that fond of Basketcase?
{Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW} *pelted by baby Belials*
Ow.
I mean, there's things to like. I do think the movies got weaker as the puppet got better. II just doesn't hit with me despite being similarly madcap to Frankenhooker (and shot at the same time!) and The Progeny was just a general misstep.

Agreed that for Basketcase the series got weaker, even as the puppets improved. Speaking of the visual elements of the film, oddly enough the only Henenlotter horror movies I have on Blu-ray are Basket Case 2 and 3. Other than that I just have the ancient SWV DVD of the original and an old Synapse DVD of Brain Damage. I don’t have a physical copy of Frankenhooker handy though that might change next time MVD has another Synapse Blu-ray sale

Was looking though a box of horror DVDs I have sitting somewhere random in my house that I haven't really looked through since I moved into my apartment like five years ago.
Lots of good potential October movies, and even a few that might not be technically horror, but I might count them anyway because I just wanna watch them.
Haven't really thought about what I will watch for Halloween, but every year around this time I always remind myself that I have that box of DVDs and I guess this is the year I finally do something with it.
Other than those, I'll try and build up a small reserve of films on my DVR and hopefully I can motivate myself to start watching everything in a week or so.

How would folks rank the Frank Henenlotter movies they’ve seen? I just realized after watching Basket Case 3, that I’ve seen all his narrative films EXCEPT Bad Biology 2008. I also have his Godfather of Gore and That’s Sexploitation documentaries, but haven’t got around to watching them. Anyway, from what I’ve seen I’d rank them… 1. Basket Case 2. Frankenhooker 3. Brain Damage 4. Basket Case 2 5. Basket Case 3 1.Frankenhooker 2.Basket Case 3.Brain Damage 4.Basket Case 2 5.Bad Biology 6.Basket Case 3 Think that is all his films. Bad Biology is the one I dont own yet.

Someone mentioned building up a reserve of movies on the DVR for october. I start in August recording late at night piles of horror films off Starz,Encore and TCM.
That way I got stuff to watch if the net goes down. Or if I got people over and cant fit us all in my room. Drawback to having so many shelves in my room is that to view my tv you have to sit on my bed.

More of a dark fantasy than anything, but filled with enough shiver-inducing imagery and ghoulish nightmare fodder to satisfy horror fans of any age. And with one main character being gay, we are not saddled with a tacked-on love story to slow things down. The pace is pretty much perfect; with the novel short enough for things to speed along pleasantly, yet long enough to include everything good fiction needs. An A+ effort.

I've gone to the movie theater a couple times in the past week. I'm not going to do full reviews for these pictures since they're still new, but I wanted to share some thoughts.
Last Monday I saw the film BARBARIAN (2022). Since Jordan Peele had a hit with GET OUT, we've seen some comedians dabble in serious horror (horror comedy has been around for a long time, I'm not really talking about that). In addition to Peele's continued success, Chris Rock was a guiding hand in the writing of the SAW spinoff SPIRAL (in addition to starring), and BARBARIAN was written and directed by Zach Cregger, of the sketch comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U' Know. I don't know if there's any real underlying theme to the work these people are doing, but I do think it's interesting we might get some new "Masters Of Horror" from the world of comedy.
As to the film itself, BARBARIAN does a great job in its first half setting up and building a sense of dread. And then as soon as the antagonist of the film makes its presence known, the whole thing falls apart. Both for what it is and what it does, it just didn't really do it for me. Again, I'm being vague. Most people I've interacted with that have seen the movie loved it, and it took some chances that can be seen as divisive. I fell on the other side of the line, but I don't want to go into details. Everyone recommends going in blind. *shrug*
Then earlier today, I saw the film PEARL (2022), Ti West's prequel to the late-70s-set slasher film X, released earlier this year. PEARL is set in 1919 and stars Mia Goth (also co-writer) as the title character, a young woman living on a farm with her strict mother and ailing father. She's married, but her husband is gone to serve in the war. Her escape from the drudgery of her everyday life is fantasies: becoming a famous dancer, maybe winding up on the big screen. She occasionally visits the movie theater in town and dreams of being in one of those movies. Again, I don't want to go into all the details, but it's a rude awakening for Pearl and the people around her when her fantasies clash with the reality of the world.
The story being told by PEARL isn't exactly new, we've seen descent-into-madness style horror before. But the film is stylish as hell, deliberately designed to look like one of those sweeping Technicolor epics of the 30s-40s like GONE WITH THE WIND or THE WIZARD OF OZ. Performance-wise, Mia Goth carries the whole film and gives an incredible performance. Pearl may not be the star she dreams of becoming, but Ms. Goth certainly is. And already the teaser is floating around for the third part in the series, the mid-80s set MAXXXINE!

Funnily enough, I think the first Hellraiser gets more boring with every rewatch, while at least Hellbound never looses it's appeal.

For me it captures the feel and essence of what Barker was doing in the Hellbound Heart Novella. So many people saw it and got hung up on the whole "BUt PINHEAD IS BARELY IN IT". Go watch the first film again Pinhead is barely in it. The cenobites were never meant to be the leads. Hellworld....it is far from the worst Hellraiser film, that is Revelations.

I can’t say enough about how great Mia Goth is in this movie. The long monologue at the end will whoop whoever gets the Oscar nomination she deserves instead. I wrote a review on my horror blog if anyone is interested. Pearl Review The blog is only a few days old but I try to put new content up every day.

Just read your Friday the 13th part 2 review. Good work, while 2 isnt my favorite in the franchise I do love that movie. Has my favorite look for Jason and yes Amy Steel is one of the best final girls in slasher history. My favorite growing up was always 4. It’s probably the most perfect distillation of what the franchise is. Like Goldfinger for Bond where everything came together for the first time. Then when I got older it was 6 because the knowing humor really clicked for me. About three years ago I did a run through of all the movies and 2 just knocked me out. But like I wrote…it has giant gaping flaws that you can’t ignore. I just find the meat of the movie to be so…perfect. I love these characters. I love the care they put into setting up everything. And that third act is probably my second favorite final act in slashers aside from maybe everything that happens at Stu’s house in Scream. There’s an urgency to it that gives me a rush I just don’t feel that often. And yeah…Amy Steel has a lot to do with that. Thank you for reading it.

For all you horror physical media enthusiast Kino Lorber’s Shocktoberfest sale just went live today. I got a whopping 28 titles! In particular I was surprised to find Cut and Run (1985) on Blu-ray. I know for a long time it didn’t have any in-print physical media release stateside. I guess whatever rights issue that was holding things up got resolved. And speaking of physical media deals yesterday Walmart botched the online pricing of The Halloween 4K Collection (1995-2002). The thing hasn’t even been released yet and has an MSRP of $129.98. I got in an order and was about to post it here, but then they fixed the price. I’m sure others got in orders too. We’ll see if mine gets honored

I like that trailer I saw for the Hellraiser remake. My only complaint is them taking one of the most attractive women in show business, Jamie Clayton, and covering her all up in cenobite make up.

The other film is Dead End Drive In,a film I watch way more often than Cut and Run. I still haven't got into 4k. Dont have a 4k tv or player,my lady has one. Figure when my tv dies I will replace it with a 4k. Same with my Blu Ray player.

Found this Harris published Vampi 25th anniversary special earlier. Checked my comic database and it was found in a comic shops 50 cent bin a few years back. First off look at the gorgeous Frazetta cover. IIRC Frazetta did the cover to the first issue of Vampirella when Warren was publishing the title. Then there is 9 pages of painted Mark Texeria art. Which is him redoing the Vampi origin story. Then 9 pages of Michael Bair artwork. Bair is amazing but also so slow he rarely does more than covers. So 9 pages of his art on good paper is a blessing. Then 11 pages of Amanda Conner art. And ending with 11 pages of amazing PAINTED Ray Lagos art. Notice how I didn't mention the writing... well that is cause with Vampi usually the writing is average or worse. But it is Vampirella. Most people didn't read it for the stories. Just really happy to have not only found this comic but found it so cheap. Any other Vampi fans here at FAN?
